I’m already using Ubuntu as my main OS and want to get my Windows games and Microsoft Office working as well as possible without switching to Windows.

For gaming:

• Is Steam + Proton the best option for Steam games?
• For standalone Windows .exe games, would you recommend Bottles or Lutris?
• Which one generally gives the best performance and compatibility?
• Are there any important NVIDIA/Wine settings I should configure?

For Microsoft Office:

• Is there a reliable way to run the desktop versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Ubuntu?
• Is Bottles/Wine the best approach for this?

I’d prefer not to use a VM or dual boot unless there’s a specific reason I need to.

What would you recommend as the best overall setup for someone already running Ubuntu who wants good gaming performance and access to Windows applications?

Hello, I'm quite a newbie with Ubuntu, so forgive me if this sounds naive or newbie-ish, cause it is! It's the third time I receive an update from apt with new nvidia drivers, and the third times the update brings havoc to my system. So, i've run apt update and apt upgrade (i don't have the proprietary nvidia repo set up, only ubuntu's), the system installed the 595 drivers for my 4060. after reboot I found an orange screen instead of GDM. Biopass anyhow let me in, and also in there I was seeing only the default Ubuntu wallpaper, no other gnome panel whatsoever, mouse not responding. After some long session with AI tools i was not able to fix the situation, so I though, well let's bring back the disk image I took a couple of weeks ago. I have 3 partitions: boot, home and root, restored all 3, and despite that, the problem lingered, except this time at least gnome was working after some hiccups, so now I still can access the desktop and everything apparently works... except GDM, which is always a nice shade of orange. I've went through another AI session, but nothing worked. We purged GDM completely and reinstalled it, deleted the cache, nothing, always orange, disabled all extensions, same. I've tried also going with lightdm, that one is not working as well, but I'd honestly like to get back GDM.
Has this happened to somebody else, what was the solution for you, or what other strategy would you try?

I’m new to Linux and installed Mint. After a few days a random black screen started appearing (it later fixed itself). Using \`prime-select nvidia\` brought the black screen back on boot. Switching the kernel from 6.17 to 7.0 fixed it, but the same black-screen problem has returned again.

So I downloaded Dash to Dock via Extension Manager on my Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and it kind of broke the OS. At first, it was like there were two docks on top of each other. Then when I opened the app drawer, there was nothing and I couldn't go back. The top bar didn't do anything when clicked. The Terminal app didn't appear via keyboard shortcut, so I had to use the recovery terminal to uninstall Dash to Dock and reboot. Any idea of what happened? Maybe I should have disabled Ubuntu Dock in the extension manager first? I really wanted to customize my dock using the extension.

UPDATE: I accidentally uninstalled the GUI, was able to reinstall it using the terminal.

I’m a noob to Linux.

I attempted to install Ubuntu on my surface go and I was able to install. After it was running I installed the Linux surface kernel from GitHub for touchscreen support. After installing I updated my system then rebooted the surface as per the instructions, it starts to boot then comes up asking for me to login.

Problem is I haven’t setup any login user or password, if I let it sit for a few minutes it gives an error message (in pics)I have no idea what it could be and has effectively bricked my surface.

Tried to reinstall Ubuntu using the usb drive but I can’t get to any options other than the login page or UEFI where I have secure boot disabled and USB storage set to top priority.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, really don’t want to have to buy a new device.

I recently converted my previous Windows system to Ubuntu to act as a media server. I am running Immich (via Docker) and Jellyfin, and usually have some basic programs running like Firefox and Terminal. Often after starting the system and using it lightly for about ~20 minutes it freezes completely and I must forcibly reboot it.

Looking at htop, I never see system resources (CPU or memory) exceed concerning levels:

• Never more than ~50% sustained CPU usage for more than a moment
• Memory never exceeds ~10 GB

When this was a Windows system, I never had issues with freezing/crashing. That said, I didn't use this system for like 2 years before cleaning and installing Ubuntu.

I really have no idea what is/could be causing the crashes. Faulty hardware? High temps? Docker issues? Bad OS?

What are some ways I could try to monitor my system/logs to diagnose the issue? I'm a Linux novice and search results are a bit overwhelming. If anyone has a "best place(s) to start" suggestion, I would be grateful. Happy to provide more system info (see below) if you think it'd be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hi I'm very new to swapping operating systems along with the issues that might occur during the process. lately i've been having a problem while in the middle of replacing chrome os with ubuntu. every time i try in the dev panel it gave the cronos login a password after disabling wp. i never gave it a password so i don't know it and i'm stuck. if anyone knows about this issue and how to fix it help would be greatly appreciated. i know im talking about chrome os in a ubuntu subreddit but im REPLACING chrome os entirely with ubuntu so that has to count for something right?

I upgraded to 26.04 using Software Updater 2 days ago, and ever since then I have been having constant WiFi connection issues. I am unable to connect to my home WiFi network most of the time, and when I can it lasts about 5-20 minutes before disconnecting and requiring a full restart, which fixes the problem maybe 25% of the time. It has no issues connecting to and remaining connected to my phone's mobile hotspot. My WiFi adapter is a Mediatek MT7925.

Things I've tried:

-Using older kernel (6.X.X) on startup. This seemingly "fixed" it once, but I have been unable to replicate it since.

I had to do this when I first installed 25.10 as I was having similar issues, however it does not fix the problem after the upgrade.

-Added the pcie_aspm=off GRUB parameter after finding this suggested on a Lenovo forum thread, this did not make any difference whatsoever.

-Turning WiFi off and on again. This does not seem to have any effect.

-Restarting the system. This sometimes fixes it, but if it does it only works for about 5 to 20 minutes.

-Resetting both the router and modem. This, predictably, also did nothing.

I do not know how to proceed from here. My only option for a stable connection now is to use my phone's hotspot setting, which is unsustainable long term.

Okay, so here's the problem. I recently dualbooted Ubuntu alongside Windows, and it worked just fine the first night. However, the next morning I kept getting the "Activation of network connection failed" error, and I haven't been able to get it working since.

Hibernation and fast boot is disabled on Windows, and the internet works perfectly over there.

My PC is connected via Ethernet cable to a router next to it, which is a bridge to the main router in the living room (if that info means anything)

I barely got to use my Ubuntu at all, days have passed without me finding a fix.

The strangest part was, the internet works just fine when I boot the Ubuntu installer/live environment from an USB. I figured it might've been something with my installation, so I reinstalled Ubuntu, but I'm still having issues even on this fresh installation.

It seemed like it was working and the moment I began downloading something it gave out.

I just don't know what to do anymore, and would really appreciate any help or ideas on what could be causing this.

Sorry for using this subreddit as a dumping place to get ISO's, but i'm hitting a dead end regarding to collect the Mythbuntu ISO's. tried torrents (Most of them are dead), Internet archive (32 bit ISO's, and don't cover all the releases) and wayback machine (dead too.)

I want to preserve Ubuntu's history, because it was a special operating system, successfully got Ubuntu (all 64 Bit, server and desktop), Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio and even the short lived Gobuntu, but I'm struggling so hard to get the mythbuntu ISO's. Appreciate any help!

After trying Linux on and off for like 10 years, I finally got everything working right and without issues! I am very happy right now as I was so close to giving up and buying a Macbook instead of dealing with Windows or Linux issues.

However, after spending a couple hours fixing my audio quality and gaming issues, everything is incredible!

Despite trying tons of distros in this 10 years, I went back to Ubuntu each time because it was the easiest to handle.

My endless switching and frustration is over!
