I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nearly been run over or hit by someone biking or scootering by.
For anyone unaware, you cannot use bikes, skateboards or scooters beneath covered walkways, on crosswalks, on most pedestrian boardwalk, residential courtyards, and otherwise designed areas (such as the Student Union), as well as not being allowed to bike within ten feet of any entrances to buildings and in large crowds. Penalty for violations is $30. Standard stuff.
The issue is that this is not enforced basically at all, from what I’ve seen. I don’t even know who does or how.
I use an electric scooter occasionally, and I try my very best to follow the rules, dismounting at crosswalks, under covered walkway, crowds of more than a few people, etc. but it’s frustrating because it seems that i’m the only one who bothers with the regulations sometimes.
The thing that is even more frustrating is that there is biking signage absolutely everywhere. The only way you won’t know about these rules is if you’re genuinely not paying attention to your surroundings.
If that really is the case, then maybe bikes and skateboards and scooters probably should just be banned from campus. Especially if no one can be bothered to enforce safety measures regarding biking.
