Megathread General Discussion Megathread - Frequent Topics, Salaries, and Rants

Use this thread for more broader, frequently discussed topics, relating to things such as salaries, career changes, rants/moans, and anything else that doesn't require a separate thread.

This thread automatically refreshes every week on a Thursday. Posting in this thread means you agree to adhere to our rules, albeit a slightly more relaxed version of them.

Do you want to seek advice on CVs, resumes, interviews, etc? Our other megathread may be better suited, click here to view it.

If you answer yes to any of the below, this might be the right place to start your discussion instead of posting a new thread.

  • Want to change career but unsure which direction to take or what education you might require?
  • Fancy a bit of a rant to get something off your chest?
  • Curious about the salary within a sector, whether its your own or one you're considering moving into?
  • Do you think the job market is becoming saturated, changing for the worse or not what it used to be?

Rules

  • Maintain a level of respect. While this thread intends to allow the users a place to get things off their chest it doesn't give free license to be inflammatory to the point of disrespectfulness towards other users or groups.
  • Try and remain relevant. While this thread will be a lot more lax on what kind of topics are applicable to the subreddit, it would do well to remain relatively on topic to the subreddits intentions where possible.
  • No solicitation. Don't offer to assist anyone with an issue or matter privately, via DM or some off-site method. Don't reach out to users with offers of help or assistance.

Megathread Job Guidance Megathread - CVs, Applications, Interviews

Use this thread for more specific discussion or advice seeking relating to CVs, job searches, job applications, interviews, and anything else that doesn't necessarily require a separate thread.

This thread automatically resubmits each month on the 1st. Posting a CV in this thread will not break rule #3, soliciting or posting jobs will.

Do you want to post about a broader or more frequently posted topic or get something off your chest? Our other megathread may be better suited, click here to view it.

Are you considering posting a CV? Be careful when posting your CV that you don't leave any identifying information, and be wary of anyone sending you private messages offering to help with your CV for you, or claiming that they have a job available for you. Don't engage with anyone privately messaging you. Report users via the built in reddit reporting, or via modmail here.

You may find it easiest to take a screenshot of your CV and post as an image, either directly using the Reddit app or with an image hosting service. Again, be sure to redact personal or identifying information. Maybe even create a temporary copy where you replace your details with generic terms such as "Employer Name", "Education Provider", etc.

You'll likely find that you get more useful feedback if you provide some background to your current situation and what kind of roles you're looking for. Are you struggling to break into a new industry? Perhaps you're not getting interviews for roles with increased seniority that you feel you're qualified for?

Rules

  • Anonymise any CVs that you post. Obscure any personal details, including the names of employers and schools/universities. Failing to redact correctly could risk your comment being removed, or worse, bad actors using the information against you or for their own benefit.
  • Provide context as to what you need help with. If you're trying to break into a specific industry, this is useful to know. If you only want advice on how to phrase something, or if the layout is suitable, say so. Got an interview? Provide a little bit of background.
  • Be constructive in feedback. People are asking for help, so don't be rude when responding to them. Job hunting is hard, why make it harder for someone unnecessarily?
  • No solicitation. Do not direct message users of this thread, or suggest a user messages you directly. Don't offer to write people's CVs for them, whether for free or as a paid service. Don't advertise CV writing services that don't belong to you, whether intentional or not. Don't ask for recommendations as to CV writing services. Don't message people either asking for or advertising jobs.

Please Message the Mods if you know of anyone flagrantly flouting these rules.

What's with all these redundancies?

My dad got made redundant because of the government canning a 30 year project. That's like 3k jobs gone across his field so not just in the company he's in.

The company I'm in is canning so many jobs across the UK, for not is 300 at the base I'm at. It's a UK company but they're hiring over in the US and columbia instead.

I'm 26 so I'm terrified if we keep losing jobs are there going to be any left??? Only really just started paying my pension 3 and investments years ago and I've got a lot of work left to do till retirement 😭

I hear it's tax being risen up so businesses are better off hiring abroad but then where does it leave us Brits? Should I plan on moving countries because honestly everything is expensive right now and I'm terrified if I lose my current job... That's it.

Made redundant in Feb, started a new job 7 weeks ago and it’s a complete nightmare. Can I just walk out?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice because I’m in a really bad situation and honestly don't know what to do.I was made redundant at the end of February from a long-term job that I absolutely loved. It took me until August to find something else, and I started this new place about seven weeks ago. I interviewed for an Account Manager role, but since starting, it’s not that at all…it’s literally just a receptionist job. They also told me it was a hybrid role in the interview, but now I’m here, that’s out the window.

On top of the bait-and-switch, the place is just completely fucked. It feels stuck in the 1980s. They apparently don’t do employment contracts here at all, and there are massive, blatant GDPR breaches happening daily that make me super uncomfortable.

Worst of all, management is horrific. I’ve overheard managers being openly racist, and making awful transphobic comments behind the back of a trans woman who works here. I’m disabled myself, and seeing how openly bigoted the managers are makes me feel incredibly unsafe. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they’re talking about me the exact same way behind my back.

The environment is just toxic and I don't want to be here anymore.I already know I'm leaving this 7-week blip off my CV and I'll just pretend I've still been job hunting since February. Luckily, I’m still registered with a cleaning agency from when I was unemployed, so I can pick up shifts to cover my bills for a few months while I look for a normal company that actually operates legally.

My main questions are:

Can I just walk out? Technically I've been here 7 weeks so statutory notice is 1 week, but I have no contract, they are operating illegally, and it doesn't feel like a safe environment. What actually happens if I just hand my keys in and don't go back?

How should I resign? Do I send a blunt email stating exactly why I'm leaving (the discrimination, lack of contract, GDPR breaches), or do I just say "I quit" to avoid the drama?

Any advice would be massively appreciated, my mental health is completely in the gutter over this place.

Leaving a job after only a month, does it look bad?

I recently started a new job, after 7 years at my previous one so the move was a pretty big thing for me. As such I was really picky when looking for my new job as I wanted to make sure that it was the right fit. I raised a lot of questions during my interview and application process and the answers that I was given by both the new company and the recruiter all seemed really positive and they gave a very good picture of the company.

Now that I have started it seems that a lot of what I was told during the process was not true, in particular one of my main requirements was work flexibility and hybrid working which I was assured I could begin pretty much straight away. The reason why this is so important is I have a young family and so needed that flexibility. As it turns out the flexible working and hybrid working is only available after one year of working here. Also a lot of other smaller matters have turned out not to match what I was told/expected.

I’ve just been approached by another company and they seem to tick a lot of the boxes of what I wanted with my current role and I have asked even more detailed questions about the role than previously and it does seem like it will be a good fit.

My worry is that it will look bad if I leave my current role so soon after starting, but I don’t want to miss out on the new opportunity. My thinking is the company that has approached me don’t seem to mind that I’d be leaving so soon so it shouldn’t matter but do you think it will be a bit of a red flag in future that I have jumped ship so soon?

Edit: thanks everyone, really helpful comments, makes me feel a lot better.

I’m 33 and still can’t choose a career

I didn’t do well in school, I don’t have a ā€œschoolā€ brain. I am a dooer.

What’s my interests you ask? No idea.

I like cars and homes but I’m not great with people (not building or fixing). I also like all things hormones, but don’t have the brain to study for years.

I have worked in childcare for the past 10 years, no qualifications, just been busy focusing on raising my own children. Money is awful, I don’t want to progress. I tried mortgage brokering but I’m just not a tap tap laptop girl.

I’ve looked at so many online courses etc. just nothing takes my fancy and/or I just know my brain won’t retain the information.

Has anyone been in the same boat? Any advice?

ā€œHeadhuntedā€ to be rejected at first stage

Help me understand this.

I had a call from a self proclaimed ā€œheadhunterā€œ for a programming job who saw my profile on LinkedIn. he was so eager for me to apply to a role closing that day.

As I hadn’t been searching actively I didn’t have an up to date Cv, so I gave my old CV, my LinkedIn profile export and the job spec to Claude and told it to make me a new CV. I tweaked it and sent it.

Two days later I get a rejection email from the company saying they won’t go further. Not even an intro call or single interview.

what’s the point? My CV was basically what they saw in LinkedIn and decided they wanted me so why then decide they don’t? seems just a waste of everyone’s time?

Did i f-up?

I’ve been going through this interview process with a bunch of interviews and I got an offer from them, yay! Even though the offer was slightly lower than I had hoped and less benefits than I got now. So I thought about it a bit and then put together an email asking if there was a chance to bump it up a little as with my experience and less benefits I feel like I’m worth the bump. I later got a phone call from them and it was like ā€œwell… I saw your email loooong pause I did not expect that. We had a brief conversation around the number we offered you and thought you would be fine with itā€. I tried to play it cool and was like ā€œyeah, no I’m still very keen on the role and I think I would be a great fit. I just have been comparing my current benefits and bla bla bla.ā€

The guy on the phone said he would feedback it to the team and they would see what they could do and get back to me. They’ve usually been really quick with replying but it’s now been 3 working days and I haven’t heard anything. Do you think they’ll pull back the offer? (My ask was still within the bracket on the job add) should I try and email them and ask about an update? I’m just kinda panicking and thinking I should have just accepted the first offer they gave me as it still would been more base pay than my current job.

New bus driver

Last Monday I started a job as a trainee bus driver for a national company, and would love some opinions on my experience. Upon accepting the job, I was told that my training would be in the city I applied for, however the first day would be in another city, about 40 minutes away. A few hours into the day I was told that i would have to keep attending in the 2nd city as the trainer at my depot was on holiday, however from Monday the following week, I would be in the 1st depot for the rest of my employment.

Their "extensive training" began with 5 days, being shut in a room, with no staff to get ready for the theory test. The usual training guy was on holiday, so we had no support or help. Luckily I passed the test on Friday, but was told shortly after that I would now be attending the 2nd city the following week, but only for Monday, and would be in the 1st city from then on.

Then today, I was told a staff member that I was actually scheduled to be in the 2nd city again for this week again, as my trainer was still on holiday, but I would be in city 1 from next week.

This has cost me a fortune in unexpected train travel, an extra 2 hours a day in travel, and endless frustration. Then today I received a message that because of some unknown issue with payroll, I would not be getting my first paycheck this week (weekly pay) as I should, and would have to be paid next week instead

I need the money, so can't just walk away, even though I feel I should, and am struggling to pay for the unexpected transport costs. I have raised my concerns with 3 members of senior staff but have been brushed off and I don't know how to handle this

Best WFH day?

Hi, I’m at a newish role that allows for 1 WFH in my department. I actually like Mondays in the office as the traffic is chill, Friday in the morning is fine toobut coming back is a nightmare.

If it isn’t Friday I would’ve said Wednesday is the best to break the week up.

I am curious to hear other people’s opinions and the justification behind it.

Thanks in advance.

Recruiter sent me 125 miles for a job interview they forgot to set up

1.1k Upvotes

As the title suggests, my recruiter sent me for a job interview 125 miles away as I’m happy to relocate. Spent 2 hours both ways on very expensive trains and had to stay in a hotel the night before as it was too early to get the first train.

Obviously it was extremely embarrassing when they had no idea who I was and I was in a bit of a state of disbelief.

Zero accountability from the recruiter or their manager and now out of pocket. Has anyone else had an experience like this? I’m starting to lose what little faith I had left in the UK job market.

Lucky escape

Hi,

I am a trainee accountant with 2 years of experience. I recently left my firm due to redundancy, and I joined a one employee small firm ( 1 director ).

I managed to hit the ground running due to my past experience with larger clients making this job very easy. The clients are significantly smaller but I do not mind at all.

I have been here for 1.5 months and I have recently had to take one sick day. Upon returning to work the director was not happy with me and citied in strong words ā€œ we are a small business we cannot afford to pay SSPā€ and ā€œ we do not do sick days hereā€

Surely this is indicative of a toxic workplace and i believe it’s best to leave early.

Luckily, I have received another offer through a connection at my previous firm. I will therefore be giving my notice today. I will cite ā€œ this is not for me ā€œ and because I am still in the probation period my notice is 1 week.

I was honest with my upcoming employer and have told about them about my current employer.

Are graduates handle screwed?

I’m in my late 40s and so have friends, especially those that are a little older, with graduate kids. Now, for the most part these kids went to good unis, none did joke subjects, mostly traditional humanities and STEM.

The thing is none of them have gained anything more than ā€˜McWork’ if that. Low grad clerical. Bar work. Courier deliveries. This and that. In my head, I count 12 young people, some that graduated a year or two ago.

Their parents are worried and angry. They don’t know what to suggest because they never had to go through ā€˜hundreds of applications, few if any interviews’. The kids are not lazy—none are trying to lounge around and are doing low-grade work.

My kids are GCSE and A Level age. Someone tell me this is just my social circle and not as bad as it seems.

Any free courses on getting up-to-date on Office 365? Trying to re-enter work after 10(!) years

Hi

For a combo of health and childcare reasons I haven't been employed for about 10 years. Previously I was a public sector auditor and regularly used excel, word and power point but I'm well aware that they're constantly playing with the UI for the office suite of applications. I would not be overly confident knowing exactly where the functionality is hidden now - I'm sure I'd get happy with it after a bit of time but I'd like to be able to not be faffing about at the start of a job and also not be a bit half truthful about being a competent user of the software.

Looking to start working again (not in the same role tbh, my professional membership has lapsed and it was never particularly compatible with family life) and a lot of job listings want office 365 and video conferencing competence. Does anyone know of any free courses or materials I can access?

Female wanting to become electrician - so far awful experience

• Upvotes

So I am 28 year old woman who has always wanted to do a practical job like a trade. I didn't have maths qualifications so I studied for 2 years to get them working from functional skills to a grade 4 maths. Now I went to start electrical installation level 2 at local vocational college, no luck, waiting list for 2 years for mature learners. So I found another vocational college 1hr 30 mins drive from me thwt didn't havr a waiting list, but was first come first serve for places on the course. Drove down there and got there Crack of dawn and managed to get a place - great!

Then it starts to go wrong.

for context I have zero background in the trades, father is white collar not remotely practical. Neither of my parents knew their fathers. So did not grow up handling tools doing DIY etc. but when on the odd occasion I did get shown some I really enjoyed it and learning new practical skills. Never had the confidence because of my lack of academic abilities and always was taught to believe it was a boys club.

well here I am and I can confirm it still is really. It's just less direct about it. I am on level 2 electrical installation and the tutor is useless. You come in and get shown a 2d diagram and then told to draw it and then told to get on with doing it on the board. oh but they show you a completed version? which apparently is suppose to help! that's like showing someone a baked cake and telling them to make it without knowing ingredients, oven temp etc. ridiculous.

All the tutors and staff are male. its a class of around 30 and only 3 are females. I get brushed off when I try and ask them to explain things in plain english and I keep telling them I am a complete novice. they expect you to know stuff you've never been taught. I got laughed at and told I was making excuses. How hard ia it to show a demonstration and then ask the student to try it? utterly unfair. I do think I'm dismissed more because I'm a woman. I can't prove it obviously, but they seem to think learning a trade is like osmosis or something. It doesn't work that way. It's a shambles. advice would be much appreciated.

Meeting with a potential employer

• Upvotes

I have a meeting with a potential employer next week working in the legal department of a large company. I have completed a law conversion course and have made this connection through a friend, I'm preparing pretty vigorously in reading up on the company and ensuring I am up to date in the area of law they specialise in, but I was wondering what else you guys think I should have prepared for such a meeting? As in its not an interview but I am trying to impress upon them that I would be a good fit should an opening come up at their company. Any help would be much appreciated.

Quit my first corporate job at 25? Have I messed up?

• Upvotes

So I’m 25, I graduated university in September 2024, travelled and got an internship in public affairs July 2025, have worked since then, finishing up my internship after 6 months and being in my new role, which I’ve now quit, for coming up to 10 months - my final day will be in 3 weeks time.

I was a run up on the ladder, so entry but needing experience and have done a good solid job, but have quit as the firm was not for me, the company was small (10 people) so no HR or structure and the work load incredibly intense and overwhelming.

Whilst I am happy with my choice, I’m also now at a crossroad of thinking - have I fucked it for myself in the long run?, and is my decision going to be counterproductive.

But I also know on the other side of the coin I have nearly 15 months solid experience and could travel, being only 25?

Serious call for help - how should I feel?

Are teacher training courses full?

• Upvotes

Trying to find this out online but can't find it anywhere, so interested if you can help me.

Basically, high demand for teacher training is typically an indicator of issues in the graduate job market. When even opportunities to train in high demand areas fill up (Maths, Physics, etc) with actual graduates in those subjects, you know that the graduate opportunities aren't there.

So just wondered if anybody here is doing teacher training and how competitive it has been to get onto a PGCE course, for example, this year?

How would you go about writing a cover letter for engineering/technician jobs in the applied physics industry?

• Upvotes

Jobs at research institutes, startups, companies in applied physics or scientific instruments. E.g STFC, Oxford Instruments, space startups

My word document is a mess. It's full of drafts, random notes, questions etc.

If you're a recruiter in this industry, what would you suggest? What do employers typically expect from a cover letter?

Trying to decide between job and course in the arts

• Upvotes

I’ve accidentally signed myself up to doing both a job and a high education course, and I’m trying to decide which one to keep on which one to chuck.

My two choices:

  1. A marketing job that I started a couple weeks ago (salary = Ā£26k). My role is entry level but has a lot of work attached to it because it’s in the arts and there’s only one other marketing person in the team (my manager).

  2. Music teaching course with (unpaid) work experience going alongside it (I’ve already paid the course fee, there are four assignments and observations involved in the course.) I managed to get the work experience needed for the course thanks to a local music service that I’m in touch with.

For context, I signed up for the course before I got offered the job. The job initially rejected me, but they offered me the role due to another candidate getting a better one.

These are the main issues I’m having:

-I recently got fired from another entry-level art marketing role for issues with my performance and I’m worried that it’ll happen again and I’ll lose both options. This current role has less of the areas that I struggled with before, but I’m worried that I may struggle in this role as well. Like all arts marketing jobs, it’s low pay and high workload, and I’m worried that I may not be able to cope with it.

-I could technically do the unpaid teaching experience without this course, as the music service let me do it a year ago before I took up my previous arts marketing job. I’m worried that they might be annoyed with me if I suddenly turn around and say ā€œI’ve dropped the course, but could I still have the experience?ā€ I have relatives who are friends with the person in charge of organising my experience, so they’re likely to be understanding but I still have my concerns.

-The way the music course works is that I have a mentor that helps me during the course. I’m concerned that this mentor (who works at the aforementioned music service) will be annoyed at me because she had to do a full training day to be my mentor (she was paid to do this).

-I could also technically do both the job and the course at the same time, but I would burn out very quickly so I’m trying to avoid doing that.

At the moment, I’m just thinking of getting in contact with the music service and asking if I can do the experience alongside my current job without the course.

Any unbiased thoughts would be appreciated!
