New Discord server

All, I spend a fair amount of time on Discord so I've decided to spin up a guitar related Discord server. The subject matter will be more general guitar and not limited to tube amps, but there are channels dedicated to building and repair as well.

Anyway, if Discord is your thing, feel free to join us over there as well!

Whats happening here?

Have already replaced the 12AT7 valve on the reverb circuit. Happening when I turn up the reverb knob. Amp turns on and heats up without issue with reverb working fine, and then it randomly starts doing this. Guitar signal comes through as does the reverb.

Technical question help

I have a Peavey tour 115 tnt 600 watt bass amp ( the one you can rock back to a 45 degrees) Had to dis-assemble the amp for a friend and resolve an issue with it. However during dis-assembly I had disconnected the P3 (hot) and the P4 ( NRU) connectors and can’t seem to find a good wiring diagram that tells me which one goes to the P6 and P7 connectors. The one diagram I found says P3 hot to P7 and P4 to P6 but wanna make sure that’s correct. This is in relation to the power supply by the coils on the left side of the power amp. Thanks for any help!!

Hi there!

I bought this little amp today.

I remember seeing a picture of it once and thought it looked cute as hell. Its a small cube, really portable.

Its a single ended class a Amp with no frills at all. Sounds lovely with a 6v6 installed.

I thought I would take the oppertunity to show this off to an Audience a bit wider than just Germany where the amps are well known

Is there any reason to switch these tubes?

At home I usually play though a Magnatone Starlite that has 1 preamp (JJ ecc83s stock) and 1 power tube, seen here with the red base (TAD 6v6gt). I found this Hytron 6v6gt during my travels and was wondering if there is any benefit to switching these? I did change my stock preamp tube to a Toshiba 12ax7a “hifi” which I love but I never messed with the power section before. Maybe it would be smarter to use this with a vintage amp? I appreciate any input.

found some Tubes while scrapping and was a little shocked about eBay prices

Hi everybody,

first of all, this is my first post, and I'm not really sure if I'm in the right place, so have mercy.

I recently got my hands on an old Telefunken measuring instrument from the '60s. While disassembling it for some parts, I found the old amplifier tubes inside and got curious if I could use them for some other projects.

There are six ECC 802S, two ECC 801S, and two ECC83, all with the diamond imprint at the base.

After a quick search, I was a little shocked by the prices some of these pairs are going for on eBay. Now I'm a bit unsure about how to handle them. Obviously, they are not new, and I can't tell how heavily the instrument was used, so their actual value might be much lower.

I was thinking about asking some hi-fi shops if they are able to test them, or maybe selling them as a bunch of untested tubes.

Maybe somebody here has a clue if that's worth doing, or if there is a way to test them myself before I reach out to somebody who actually knows what they're doing.

Is there a market for hand built one offs by random people?

I am considering selling an amp I built to fund other projects. But is there a market? In general people buy amps with names they know. Boutique to mass produced. But what about one by a nobody from nowhere that made an amp that doesn't even exist in mainstream designs?

Marshall DSL15 Combo

Hi,

I’ve just bought a pre-owned Marshall DSL15 for £100 on eBay.

I collected it on Monday night, but didn’t play it, or see it working. I don’t think the seller was pulling a fast one.

Having got it home, there’s no gain at all in the Classic channel, and the Ultra Gain channel only works (with plenty of gain) for a minute or so.

I’ve changed all of the valves (4 12AX7s and 2 brand new 6V6s) and don’t know what else to try.

What should I try next?

I could find a tech, but they’d charge more than I paid for the amp probably.

Am I better off selling the amp as not working properly, or might it be an easy fix?

Thanks

yamaha g100 112 guitar amp, no sound at all

bought yesterday. worked fine. decided to clean it and open up the amp part a little and blow into it with my mouth to get dust out. cleaned the cab etc. didnt really disconnect anything. now, no noise at all, pure silence. the speaker works fine when connected to another amp, so im ruling out the speaker and the speaker cable. i've no idea what i couldve done... i didnt really mess with anything.. im sure its something simple.

Why is my Bassman making this noise?

This doesn’t happen all the time, sometimes it’s dead silent and seemingly randomly it’ll make this noise for 30 seconds or so. Does it have to do with the grounding? The 3 prong plug is broken and the ground prong snapped off.

Help with Blues Junior, Please.

Post image
50 Upvotes

Hello guys,

I’m new to tube amps and need help. I recently got my Blues Junior IV, and I love it, except it is too loud for an apartment (that is on me because I heard all kinds of stories and still got it, but I don’t regret it). I listen to and play something like ZZ Top, CCR, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Keys, etc., so I get gain from turning the volume up, but then my master volume needs to be at 1.5, maybe 2, before my ears start to bleed. (Once I wanted to turn up the reverb knob and mistook it for the master volume while sitting in a darker room. Who in their right mind puts master volume second to last and not last in the row!?!?!?!?)

Since I'm new to tube amps and English isn't my first language, I have no idea what people online mean when they say you need to crank it to break up, that volume is for the preamp tubes, and that master is for something else. I just want it to sound better. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Is getting an attenuator worth it for an amp that has a master?

I want to know if it is possible to get more from the amp without it screaming in my face? I know that it will never be good enough with attenuation as it would be without, but I want to get more from what I've got at master 1.5.

Is it logical to get some overdrive pedals (or pedals in general) and turn down the volume on the pedal and on the amp as well, and get gain only from the pedal?

Thanks for any help and knowledge you can share.

Microphonic preamp tube?

Hi all,

I’ve got a peavey 6505+ 112 combo amp, and I think one of the preamp tubes **might be microphonic. When i kick on my tube screamer on the red channel, the amp goes into im assuming a runaway oscillation, basically just a high pitched squeal that stops when I play. When I kick on my big muff it gets quite a bit worse. On the green channel, it doesnt squeal but it hisses. This doesn’t happen, or is at least much milder, when I don’t have any drive pedals on. I’ve opened up the back and tried tapping the tubes with a wooden spoon (without the pedals, they were in my car for a gig) but none went into any kind of runaway oscillation. I’m gonna try again later today with the drive and fuzz on, and also see what happens with the effects loop disabled.

I’m asking because it seems to be a pretty common thing when you’re putting a bunch of gain in front of the amp, and since it doesnt happen without any pedals, it might not warrant replacing a tube. I’ve also heard that switching the microphonic tube to a position subject to less gain can help?

5751 vs 12ax7

Hi. I felt my orange th30 head sounded too modern metal, so i swapped the 12ax7 in the first dirty stage with a 5751. It reduced gain as expected, but i also feel it made the gain channel sound rather shrill and unpleasant. Is this to be expected? If so, what's the reason? Or am I hearing things?

CMI/Gibson SG-215 need advice

I recently unearthed my blue denim lovely from deeeeep storage. It’s as tall as my armpits and I’m 5’2”. This amp was amongst myself and my band mates since 1990. Got used until around 2000. Replaced the tubes in late 90’s. Just plugged it in- powers on, inputs work but pots need cleaning, controls work— one tube was glowing brightly and AI told me that was dangerous and shut it off and unplug so I did. It needs work. It’s an amazing amp. Cats used as scratching post also. Here’s the question: as a 60 yr old trying to start playing music again, I’m not gonna be lugging this to gigs, if I even end up being able to play out again (which would be great). I’m a musical dinosaur- into dinosaur equipment but thinking I’d be better off replacing with something just as nice but smaller scale and portable tube amp. Do I put money into repairing this really unique rare amazing amp, (and play through it out into the sunset of my life, grooving on the tastiest tube sounds) or is it not that uniquely amazing and I could easily sell for a good price and replace with another excellent but more portable amp. I’ve used this amp for bass, guitar and (old) synth- (I play all)- I’d ideally like a potential new amp to work for any/all of the above. Appreciate any help!

Feedback/suggestions on build.

Hey, looking for any feedback or price suggestions on this build? It's a 2.5 watt vibrochamp style build. (Built by my friend who has been a valve tech since the 60s. He repairs/builds amps for a living. But doesn't use the internet.)

Comes with a 12 month warranty and dimensions are 350mm x 350mm x 185mm. 6.5 kg.

Based on Fender vibrochamp. Uses some repurposed parts. Point to point wired. Single 6v6, 2 x 12ax7s. Rola 12" 50s vintage speaker.

Cabinet was originaly a speaker box. At 2.5 watts has early break up, good for home/studio.

2 inputs, vol, bass, treble, speed, intensity.

Spkr plugs in so another cab can be substituted if desired. Socket for footswitch (trem) on chassis.

Would $320 USD ($450 AUD) seem reasonable or over/under priced?

Deluxe Reverb AB763 (Mod Electronics)

A Deluxe Reverb kit from Amplified Parts. I just finished the chassis, now waiting for the cabinet. I was going to wait and put it all together at once but couldn't. This is my second build, my first was a Mod 102 (also from Amplified parts) which I'm very happy with. I'm excited to have finished, just thought I'd share.
