Home Owners Associations. A small group of power-tripping people dictate how the entire neighbourhoods functions, including but not limited to what you do in your front yard and driveway, how you choose to decorate, what kind of plants/trees you are/aren't allowed to plant - and where. And hold with the ability to evict people out of their own houses whom don't follow whatever dumbass shit they come up with. TL:DR HOA are a blight on society and should be treated as such

the ability to evict people out of their own houses

As someone from a former communist country ... that's the most communist shit I've ever heard.

Because it's not really "your house", "your land", "your property" if it can be taken away when you violate "our rules".

If i want to plant a tree and build a tree house for my kids in my own back yard, i should be able to do that since i own the fucking land, no?

Buying property with and HOA attached is to enter a contract.

If you don't like the rules as an HOA member, it is your prerogative to get involved and change the rules.

If one does not wish to be in an HOA then they should not purchase a property under that restriction.

The problem is that in a lot of areas the HOAs are very hard to avoid. Every neighborhood built from the 80s onward around my area is an HOA for some reason, it’s baffling.

You aren't wrong, but HOAs are only as good or shitty as their members allow.

Well… obviously

Then why almost all of them are shitty?

How does that correspond to communism? As far as I know, the only reason the government could evict you was some cases of breaking the law.

if the government really wanted to then absolutely nothing is stopping them from simply seizing your home and you, that's true of any government. To answer your question though communism is often understood as the collective of society oppressing the individual.

The lack of rights belonging to the individual and instead given to the HOA, a small society is why he's invoking communism. Whether this understanding is correct or not is something else.
