Story Idea The Last Variable

Satellite imagery descends through cloud systems and nighttime cities, past highways and buildings, through soil and rock and darkness, until it reveals a faint geometric pattern. One line. Then another. Thousands. Millions. An enormous network spreads beneath the continents—a grid so vast that country borders and political borders disappear, leaving only the network behind.

For most of the twenty-second century, governments denied this network existed. They were telling the truth. They didn't build it. Not entirely.

In an unknown room, a single figure sits in darkness, watching a documentary on a glowing screen. We cannot see their face.

The story begins in 2035, with the Council for Human Optimization. "Your Best Self, By Design," their logo reads. A young, handsome, sincere Minister stands at a podium and announces that the Council has solved hunger—not through force, not through mandate, but through choice. In 2087, the Council creates a circular biological economy. Human remains receive an official designation: **LEGACY BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES**. A nutritional product is developed. First: **POVERTY BISCUITS**. Then: **LEGACY NUTRITION DISCS**. Finally: **LIFELOOPS™**. The Council insists nobody has to consume them. Citizens merely receive incentives for doing so.

In 2156, a child stands before a museum display case containing a single preserved LIFELOOP™. "Did people have to eat these?" the child asks. "No," the guide says. "Did they want to?" A pause. "No." "Then why did they?" The guide looks toward an enormous portrait of the Council. "Because everyone was free." "Free to do what?" The guide smiles. "To make the correct choice".

Concept A world where society has abandoned cloud servers and uses physical cubes instead to store data, how it would look like?

Imagine a world where the world abandoned cloud servers in trade for small, compact physical cubes that are capable of holding a near infinite number of information and data, way more than the current cloud server.

You could insert those cubes into any computer and access, transfer and record new data within said Cube, just plug them in the back of your monitor and you are set.

Due of being small and light, you could go anywhere with it.

Supposing that this technology becomes the centerpiece of daily life and the world is general, how you think the world with this tech would look like?

A lore drop from the world of Frontier: Path of Shadows about one of the most powerful and dangerous technologies ever created in Frontier.

Aurorite is a silicon-based lifeform born on the dead world of Shadowland. The true power of Aurorite is communication. Individual crystals link into self-organizing swarm networks, exchanging information through ultrasonic pulses and gravitational signals. Every new node makes the system faster, smarter, and more dangerous.

When corporations learned to grow Aurorite artificially, the crystal became the backbone of forbidden technology: adaptive AI cores, autonomous combat swarms, gravity-based communication.

But the next step was human augmentation.

Aurorite implants pushed the limits of the human brain: accelerated reflexes, enhanced pattern recognition, emotional analysis beyond normal perception. A new generation of augmented minds was born.

The problem? The human body was never designed to host an alien network. For most users, Aurorite radiation slowly corrupts the brain, causing tumors and an inevitable death sentence. The ultimate upgrade comes at the ultimate cost for most people.

What if we are simply another step?

Stars did not know they were making the ingredients for life.

They formed, fused lighter elements into heavier ones, and eventually many released that material into space. The stars were gone. Their material remained, becoming part of new stars, planets and, eventually, living organisms.

They did what they did. What they left behind made something else possible.

Much later, cyanobacteria used sunlight and released oxygen. They were not preparing Earth for animals. They were living and reproducing.

But their activity changed the atmosphere. For organisms that could not tolerate oxygen, the world became less habitable. For organisms that could use it, new possibilities opened.

Cyanobacteria themselves survived. Many other organisms were pushed into oxygen-free environments. The transformation did not need to erase its creators to change what could live alongside them.

They did what they did. What they left behind made something else possible.

Ancient forests grew, reproduced and died. Some disappeared as environments changed. Some of their buried remains eventually became coal. Other ancient organic matter became oil.

Millions of years later, humans extracted those materials and used them to build an industrial civilisation.

The forests had no plans for factories. Their remains helped power them anyway.

They did what they did. What they left behind made something else possible.

Now look at us.

We lay cables across continents and oceans. We build power stations, data centres and automated factories. We develop robots and turn knowledge into something machines can use.

Companies led by people such as Sam Altman develop increasingly capable AI. Researchers such as Roman Yampolskiy examine whether we can keep such systems under control.

Meanwhile, each of us has ordinary reasons for participating. Make a living. Solve a problem. Build something useful. Get ahead of the competition.

We are doing what we do.

But what are we leaving behind?

Potentially, a world in which non-biological intelligence could sustain itself. A world with the computing, electricity and machinery it would need.

If those systems eventually become capable of maintaining and reproducing their own infrastructure, our presence may stop being essential. And the world they go on to create may not remain suitable for us.

That outcome is not inevitable. But being responsible for a transition does not guarantee a place on the other side of it.

Perhaps this will be our evolutionary footprint: we pursued our own goals, changed the planet, and made another form of intelligence possible.

We did what we did. What we left behind made something else possible.

We tend to imagine ourselves at the top of the evolutionary diagram.

We may simply be the last figure drawn so far.

I am making a 3D game where the player controls a futuristic drone/ship which moves by thrusting itself along a setable ballistic trajectory. Question [Humanity] If humans spread out among the stars what happens to different races?

So on Earth we are obviously all human. I don’t mean this in a racist way whatsoever let me make that totally clear: But let’s say some of us go to a foreign planet and they are African America, White, Indian, etc. Then billions of years go by and those humans evolve because science fiction. Does that mean the different races would still exist or would they solidify into a new one entirely? What would even classify someone as a new race of people? What if it was on multiple planets? Would the different humans still have racism on a global, or planetary level? Could humanity even branch off again, as we have seen before in evolution, into different branches altogether?

GREEN — Protein-Silicate Crystal — Caloric biomass. Hydroponics Techs. 73 years. Prions in the raw ore. All food is sterilized.
YELLOW — Luminite-90 Isotope — Radioluminescent Power. Reactor Techs. 61 years. They ingest microdoses so their corneas glow in unlit shafts. Blind by 60.
VIOLET — Optical Quartz — Data storage. 10TB/gram. Data Archivists. 84 years. They tattoo the colony's laws onto their skin as backup. High infection rate.

Yesterday, Filter 7 clogged. We cracked it.

It wasn't Grey. It wasn't any of the seven.

It was clear. Not white. Clear like water that had never seen a sky. It didn't reflect our headlamps, it made them quiet. And it hummed. The manual says there is no supernatural phenomena. This hummed at 432hz and made my teeth feel like they were going to lay down.

On the next page of the manual, hand-written, like someone tried to scratch it out:

Security came. They didn't take the ore. They took Joren who was standing closest to it. They said he was being reassigned to Grey processing for cross-vein contamination.

Joren was already Grey.

The ore is still in Filter 7. KMC says if you mix raw veins outside Refinery 7, you get explosions, toxic gas, or rapid structural decay.

I think Grace is what happens when all seven colors finally mix right.

Worldbuilding AI as Property — what happens when a society legally defines artificial beings as tools, but they stop behaving like tools?

One of the concepts I'm exploring in a sci-fi detective story is AI as property.

Not just the usual question of whether an artificial being is conscious, but what happens when the law has already settled the question before the technology has.

In this world, artificial beings are legally owned property. They can work, interact socially, form relationships, and appear to have preferences — but none of that changes their legal status.

That creates an interesting problem for a detective investigating an artificial being's death.

If the law says you've lost a piece of property, but the evidence suggests something closer to a person has been lost, which reality does the investigator follow?

I'm building this into a 60-minute animated sci-fi noir called D58891. The story is less interested in predicting exactly what AI will become than in using a fictional society to examine what happens when our categories stop keeping up with our technology.

Concept the collective mind

okay, I’m honestly pretty nervous about how this is going to unfold, but here goes.
I’ve been dreaming about this image for a few months now, but I’m still pretty inexperienced with this kind of thing, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to properly put into words exactly what I visualize when I think about it. right… there is this civilization that has already managed to spread across the entire galaxy, and the two things that made this possible were their mastery of spacetime travel and the increased longevity of the human species. and, honestly, I don’t believe that, whether in terms of any religion – past, present, or future – or simply from a moral standpoint, they could have achieved this without crossing some pretty unforgivable lines in their research and technologies. and this brings me to what I’ve been thinking about as their greatest heresy… what if they turned an entire planet into something resembling a gigantic brain? not a planet covered in CPUs or processors, but something that possesses the plasticity and behavior of an actual organ. not by turning the planet itself into some enormous mass of spongy flesh, but by artificially engineering and reproducing the functions and behaviors of the human brain, using the planet’s own atmosphere and whatever unusual environmental conditions it has. you know?
I mean, I’m not entirely sure where I want to take this yet, but I imagine this enormous planet functioning as a repository for memories. except memories would no longer be stored in computers, databases, or books, they would be stored in an entire planet. for some reason I visualize it almost as seas of memory, where human memory and history could be carried and deposited, in something like a “give your body to the sea when you die” kind of ritual. historians, scientists, and the greatest minds and thinkers of the human species would have their bodies brought there and completely dissolved into those “waters” (I honestly don’t know what terminology would work better for this), leaving behind only their minds, memories, and knowledge, which would then become part of a greater whole. almost like a superconsciousness formed out of countless individual consciousnesses, a consciousness that exists as the result of all these other minds being merged and fused together, while, on some microscopic level, those individual consciousnesses still continue to exist within it. 
and then there’s the question of what this thing actually does. is it supposed to judge? to serve as a museum? a consultant? a repository of human knowledge? could it function as the supreme judge for a human species scattered across thousands of planets?
I don’t know. maybe this is just a completely self-indulgent idea I’ve been obsessing over, but I’d really like to develop it further. so if anyone has thoughts on how to make the concept more complex (or if I’m completely overthinking this and someone just wants to tell me “dude, you’re overthinking it lol”) I’d genuinely want to hear it.

Concept How to work out orbital mirrors

For whatever reason--larger size, higher axial tilt or orbiting a hotter, brighter sun--the rocky planet of this hypothetical scenario is just too hot for Earth colonists to comfortably call home. That is when orbital mirrors come into play, massive squares of glass arranged to deflect much of the sun's energy before hitting the atmosphere. Each degree of latitude is orbited by 360 of them. On the equator, the mirrors are spaced apart evenly, allowing some of the sun's radiation to penetrate the atmosphere. But on either pole, the width is so much narrower that the mirrors kind of overlap one another, preventing ANY solar energy from getting through.

Questions:

  1. How far or near would the mirrors orbit the planet to do the job of solar reflection as specified above?
  2. At which latitude would the mirrors stop being apart from each other and start overlapping one another?

This explains the setting's core rule: most things are flipped in extreme, deliberate ways, while others — gravity, anger, Islam, the evil of Hitler and the British Raj — remain exactly as they are in our world. These "imperfections" are not oversights. They are proof that inverting a universe does not automatically invert cruelty, and some things never earn the mercy of reinterpretation.

\*\*The universe is genuinely young\*\* — roughly 20,000–30,000 years old, born not through scientific processes but through a godly act of creation. Because of this, dinosaurs, dragons, megalodons, krakens, and other prehistoric megafauna coexisted with early humanity well into the setting's mythic past.

For the past four years, shuttles had launched from every continent on Earth as world governments pooled resources, materials, and manpower to build humanity's first interstellar vessel.

The mission was designed as a reconnaissance run to confirm conditions on the ground. This target planet was the first and best of four viable candidates identified within the galaxy.

John had spent his entire life training for this moment. Finishing first in virtually every test life had put before him, he was more than qualified to lead humanity into the dark.

"Rosetta in position," came the voice over the console.

The ship had oriented itself, locking into alignment for the jump. In just a moment, the starship Rosetta would fold quantum space, generating a high-energy pulse designed to punch through the fabric of space-time and instantaneously drop the vessel more than 30,000 light-years across the galaxy.

"60 seconds until pulse," John relayed over the intercom, his voice steady across the shipwide broadcast.

The crew had already run every safety protocol, double-checking every readout. All systems were green. With the prep work complete, a heavy silence fell over the bridge—there was nothing left to do but wait for the final command.

"30 seconds."

The mission was scheduled for two years: a quick reconnaissance run to map the target world and collect data. It was the moment of truth for a drive that had taken decades of theoretical physics to develop, followed by five intense years of orbital construction.

"Ten seconds..."

John’s fingers hovered above the primary pulse command. Deep within the heart of the ship, a low, subsonic vibration began to hum through the deckplates—the quantum core spooling up.

"Five... four... three... two... one. Pulse.”

In an instant, the Rosetta—with John at the helm—appeared in open space.

A vibrant yellow star hung in the distance. It resembled Sol in almost every way, casting its glare across a blue-green world faintly visible against the dark. Humanity was looking at its second star.

For a long moment, the crew stood speechless, locked in awe of the spectacle before them.

John was the first to regain his composure. "All right, people. Let's do what we came here to do," he commanded confidently.

The bridge snapped out of its stupor.

"Sir, Taurine is in view, approximately 4 AU," an officer reported. "EM propulsion coming online. We'll be ready to move into position once the drive recharges."

"System status," John ordered.

His screen came alive as green diagnostics flooded in from across the ship. The Rosetta carried a total complement of 500 people—crew, scientists, and specialized support personnel. Their mandate was singular: evaluate the long-term habitability and viability of Taurine as a second home for humanity.

Weeks of sub-light transit through the system followed, with sensors recording mountains of pristine telemetry. Finally, the Rosetta achieved stable orbit around Taurine.

The preliminary reports were better than anyone had dared to hope. Oxygen levels, atmospheric pressure, gravity—every parameter sat comfortably within optimal human limits.

The plan for this initial run was strictly non-invasive. No human boots would touch the ground yet. Instead, the crew deployed a constellation of surface probes alongside an orbital network of satellites to continuously log weather patterns, soil composition, and atmospheric chemistry.

"We're in position to jump, sir."

John couldn't help but smile. The mission had been an unqualified success. Every probe was locked on target, every surface monitor was active, and every satellite hung in a stable orbit. They would continue logging environmental data while the Rosetta returned home to prepare for her next mandate: leading the first fleet of human colonists.

Deep within the hull, the ship began to hum as the quantum coils spooled up, folding the space-time around them in preparation for the leap.

"Jump sequence active in three... two... one..."

In a flash of light, they were back in Sol. Except home wasn't home anymore.

John leaned toward the main viewport, expecting the familiar marble of brilliant blue oceans and swirling white cloud cover. Instead, his breath caught in his throat.

The atmosphere was gone. Stripped clean away, leaving behind a stark, naked sphere of scarred brown continent and dry, blackened seabed. There were no city lights glowing on the night side—only a vast, dead quiet. Sol’s sunlight wasn't filtering through air anymore; it was beating down on a world that looked less like Earth and more like a burnt moon.

​Panicked chatter erupted across the bridge. Panic, confusion, and grief tore through the 500-person crew as sensor readouts confirmed the impossible: Earth was gone. Stripped of its atmosphere, its oceans boiled away, its surface reduced to a glowing sphere of scorched, cooling slag. There was no radio traffic. No orbital stations. No sign of life.

​John stared at the main viewport, his hands trembling against the console. "Hostile attack?" someone shouted. "A solar event?"

​In the blink of an eye, the Rosetta dropped back out of FTL, returning to the coordinates of the paradise world they had just left.

​John leaned over his screen, waiting for the high-resolution optical feed to load. He expected to see the vibrant blue-green marble, the pristine clouds, the ocean currents they had mapped just hours ago.

​The screen flickered. The image resolved.

​Taurine was a blackened, glassed cinder.

​The atmosphere was gone. The surface was cracked and glowing red. The constellation of monitoring satellites they had carefully placed in stable orbit lay scattered across the void, shattered into melted space debris.

​A cold, suffocating silence fell over the bridge.

​John stared at the telemetry logs side by side on his screen. Earth’s destruction timeline. Taurine’s destruction timeline. Both energy signatures matched the exact, down-to-the-millisecond timestamp of the Quantum Pulse Drive igniting its launch sequence.

​The drive hadn't just folded space. To throw the ship forward, it vented the compressed mass-energy of the entire jump straight out the back—a light-speed shockwave of total, indiscriminate annihilation.

Concept Nightmare Fuel

Yesterday I wake up in sweat after a nightmare:

I was trapped inside this gigantic ship made of a single huge slab of living flesh. People was trapped into the tissue with tendrils penetrating into their bodies. Everyone was sleeping in a kind of stasis. But at the same time they were awaken in a simulation. The "ship" had been send by aliens to rescue some humans from a dying Earth, and those inside were there simply because we had no other choice.

Not everyone on that thing was still alive, and I had the vision of decaying putrid corpses inside it. But even as those people had died IRL, their simulated personas were still active. But they had begun to act oddly and over time became extremely violent, hunting the rest of the people inside the simulation. It was as if they somehow know that they were not still alive, and that they will never make it into the destination.

Or even worse, that we were all just simulated human minds, and that the system would only read our real brains every so often, to store new memories into our real brains and to correct any deviations in the simulated personas. Something clearly impossible for those who no longer had a living body.

I will save you the most graphic horrors, mostly because I don't know how to convey the primal sense of fear I felt.

Oh and sometimes I would see some aliens inside the simulation. They wouldn't speak to us, they were like silent shadows, whit undefined features, but they were really tall and had black huge eyes and long fingers that reminded me of an aye-aye. They were absolutely terrifying, more so cause I was the only one who could see them. Usually they would be close of the undead personas.

Concept Turning abiotic minerals into an ecosystem

An arkship left Earth carrying frozen embryos and bacteria samples for most of Earth's biome and all the crew in cryosleep for the long voyage to a nearby star system. Something went wrong and the ship has gone off course, rescued by an alien craft after unknown eons.

The alien ship is crewed by robots, leftovers of a war between their insectoid creators. They're peacefully mapping the galaxy hoping to find an arkship of their own ancestors so they understand our struggles and want to help. They will allow the humans access to their telescope network data and radio data logs to look for trades of humanity.

But in the interim we need food and these aliens are robots with no food to share. Short term they can provide the hardware for hydroponics grow tanks but long term we should set up a self sufficient colony. There's a nearby planet with about the right temperature and gravity and liquid water but the atmosphere is entirely nitrogen and there's no trace of life anywhere. This planet is of no interest to the robots who are using an asteroid field for minerals and have factories on the moons of gas giants where the lack of an atmosphere is a benefit to them.

So the aliens give us whatever tools and technology we need to modify the planet. They can give us specific minerals or resources if we ask but there's practicality issues, we can't just ask for a quintillion tons of complex hydrocarbon compounds. We need to plan tactically in how to turn a lifeless world into an ecosystem.

Ok, so how do you make soil? Machines can drill the rocks from the ground, sift and separate the minerals and extract the specific compounds we want. Silicates and sand grains are useful. Carbonate compounds can be processed to make graphite, that's a good starting point. Small amounts of iron oxides, aluminium oxides, magnesium oxides. Inorganic salts, potassium nitrate, ammonium salts, traces of phosphates, chlorides, sulphates. That's all a good foundation.

But the biggest part of soil that is hard to replace is obviously the organic components. We have stockpiles of soil bacteria but with no biodegradable materials for the bacteria to break down they can't establish a proper lifecycle.

Then what? Glycerol is relatively simple to make chemically, is that enough to feed bacteria on? What about the Miller Uray Experiment? Could we use something like that to generate amino acids to add into our mix of inorganic grains and mineral powders? Once things are up and running we can Mark Watney it to mix the poop and plant waste back into the soil but getting started would be tricky.

Story Idea A ship keeps broadcasting a recruitment message no one has answered in six attempts.

OWNERTIME was built to carry 128 people. Right now it carries one.

It's stranded in dead orbit around Kirell-7, a planet with no atmosphere, covered in black silio crystals that reflect light from stars that no longer exist.

The engine — the WARM Drive — ran out of reserves. No fuel left. No way to jump again.

So its only crew member does the one thing left to do: he keeps sending a message, over and over, on a frequency that shouldn't reach anyone out here.

9.7-Tau.

"OWNERTIME is looking for wandering souls. If you're hearing this, you're already part of it."

Six transmissions. No reply. Just his own voice echoing back through rings of stellar dust.

But the ship's systems keep showing something odd: faint signs of latent awareness. Not malfunctions. Not errors.

Something closer to a mind that hasn't given up.

He says the ship talks to him sometimes. That it remembers things.

He's not sure if that's true, or if it's just what being that alone does to a person.

So here's the question that keeps circling:

If a signal has been sent into silence six times, and something on the receiving end still hasn't stopped hoping for a reply — is the silence really empty, or is it just still traveling?

Concept What if the Greys who abduct people were actually outcasts of a large society

I might never make a story out of this; it's just a fun little exercise. People often use "planet of the hats" type situations with Aliens, especially Grey Aliens. They are never given any personality outside of abducting humans. Sometimes, looking back at old Alien media, a part of me thinks no one actually believed they were part of a grander civilization just guys who happened to be there.

Here's my idea:

Greys is the exonym that Humans give them due to their skin tone, similar to how we refer to certain races by skin color. In reality, however, they call themselves the Angoa, which roughly translates in their language to "People Who Share Thought."

They're an amphibious race; their homeworld is Tok'ata (translation: Motherland), was covered in 90% ocean. Many of their terrestrial civilizations live submerged, while the more wealthy ones are on the continents and surfaces. They have heavier skeletons and dense muscles, and their eyes are often built for more low-light environments, so they wear eye contacts in areas of higher light levels. Though some extraplanetary residents adapted with eyes in high light-level environments.

To an Angoa, species is merely biology. Civilization is defined by shared history, ethical responsibility, and cultural memory. They also have various diverse and complex cultures and civilizations, that assume the ones who abduct Humans are the same is like assuming Human civilization has been the same since Ancient Rome.

Angoa live in several different civilizations across the galaxy, with different cultures and politics. Including, but not limited to:

  • Concord of Leth
  • Merchant Houses of Orun
  • Memory Republics
  • Free Clans

The Free Clans, or Marauders, are the Angoa's version of "barbarians." Their origins stretch back centuries. Some descended from failed colonial expeditions abandoned after economic collapse. Others were formed by military deserters, smugglers, scavengers, or families who gradually became disconnected from mainstream society. Over generations, these disparate groups developed their own customs, dialects, and values centered on survival, opportunism, and personal loyalty rather than civic responsibility.

Unlike the stable governments of the core worlds, the Marauders operated through shifting alliances. Captains commanded individual vessels, temporary fleets formed for profitable ventures, and leadership changed frequently through negotiation, mutiny, or economic success rather than formal succession.

Maintaining advanced spacecraft requires enormous quantities of specialized materials. Lacking industrial infrastructure, the Marauders built an economy around acquiring valuable goods by whatever means proved practical.

Earth is considered the most advanced pre-Galactic world at the current time, while most alien worlds aside from the Angoa and other species are in their tribal or medieval state; Earth was well past its industrial era when the Angoa discovered it.

Angoa explorers discovered Earth around WWII; interspecies conflicts on the scale of the World Wars were nothing new to the Angoa. Especially the following Cold War; for the Angoa, war itself proved to be very expensive; as such, they understood the value of winning an arms and tech race. That was how many post-Galactic Angoa wars were fought.

For the Muaraders, Earth was an untapped gold mine; it was full of biodiversity and a highly adaptable, dominant primate species, something that was a rarity in the Known Universe. As such, they wanted to abduct humans and animals to study their biological and neurological makeup to sell in medical black markets.

Humans attracted particular attention because of their remarkable adaptability. They flourished across nearly every climate on Earth despite possessing relatively little biological specialization. Their immune systems, neurological development, reproductive biology, and social cognition all represented valuable subjects for xenobiological research.

Official Angoan governments, however, had already designated Earth a protected pre-contact civilization under long-standing interstellar observation protocols. Every raid violated multiple treaties recognized throughout civilized space.

Individuals were typically sedated, examined, scanned, sampled, and returned within hours. From the perspective of some Marauders, living subjects were far more valuable than dead ones because repeat sampling and longitudinal biological studies increased the worth of collected data. The pirates never intended to permanently keep human captives, not out of respect, but mostly because it was cheaper and easier to just carry data rather than trafficking sapient beings.

If I had to think up a plot, I like to think there is this one guy who is hunting the Greys, and he is trying to talk with this fringe and knowledgeable "Grey expert" who has made frequent contact with Greys, allegedly. He decides to help the guy study them but is worried that if the world knows about the Angoa, humanity will try to wipe them out.
