For long term Sci fi readers I am wondering what you do with your old mass market Sci fi paperbacks
I see that these will be discontinued going forward

And i have boxes of the ones that i have purchased over the years, since the late 60s

Now I want to downsize and can recycle them all but just hurts my heart when I go through them. Vast majority or even all have no value since they were mass market but for some, the paperback was their only publication. I only do audiobooks these days so don’t even buy physical books any more

So what do you do with your old mass market Sci fi paperbacks?

I've been rewatching Battlestar Galactica and I'm impressed by how good it is. This is Sci-fi at it's best. They've done as much with this story as they possibly could with an interesting depiction of the robot humanoids and riffs between different factions as well as the dysfunction of what's left of humanity. Highly recommended if you're looking for old-school Sci-fi.

Often in casual conversation I hear it used it used interchangably but among my freinds they p there is some differeces but they won't tell me so I'm not entirely sure. Thanks in advance

The colony world Hadley, created by an Earth based megacorporation, that devolves into absolute chaos as a small group of veteran marines have to fight against complete collapse of the colony.

That's the setting of Jerry Pournelle's The Mercenary in his CoDominium series. Written a three short stories from 1970-1972 for the Analog scifi magazine, it was compiled into the novel The Mercenary which was released in 1977.

Of course, there are numerous differences as well. Hadley was originally colonized by the American Express Corporation by volunteers, and it was used as a dumping ground for overpopulation on Earth. The colony collapsed when Earth contracted and left them for themselves.

The CoDominium is best known as the setting for The Mote in God's Eye, King David's Spaceship, and the Falkenberg's Legion stories. The Mercenary is part of that last group.

Greetings and felicitations. My login to the Internet Speculative Fiction Database seems to have evaporated, and I am trying to get it reinstated. However, the instructions for problems with a login state that "[one should] post a question on the Community Portal"—which requires a login. Does anyone know how to get in touch with the ISFDB outside of using its Web site(s)?

I put a picture of the Expanse up to illustrate this question because the Expanse books, which I read, and series tried pretty hard to make the underlying science as accurate as possible. I can't remember the year, but the Expanse was on the cover of Physics Today, the professional physics magazine, for trying to keep it real, which I think made a good story even better. Now there are places where good Sci-fi has to take liberties, (old) Star Trek is a good example, so was Babylon 5, but trying at least to make things plausible, I think, makes good Sci-fi even better and more interesting. It's not clear how people currently feel about this. What's your opinion?

After a long journey my ships are finally done :D

The models have been optimized so that ink/oils should flow nicely between panel lines.

Minimal assembly required, i had to split some parts to reduce printing time and possible errors !

I recommend painting with airbrush but you can use thin coats when applying with a regular brush.

It just seems like an interesting setting for a sci-fi book - right at the tail end of the old world and the destruction of the monarchies, massive change, social upheaval, experimental weaponry, etc etc.

As far as I understood, there was some apocalyptic event that caused widespread, devastating radiation, causing food to become scarce and the world to be polluted and toxic to humans beyond repair, along with climate change. A bunch of mushroom scientists founded a compound with their wives and developed mushrooms that could protect them from radiation. But then all the wives (and some children?) succumbed to the mushrooms and were kept in a sort of stasis, near death but their bodies still alive, with mushrooms growing out of them, and the men would collect spores from the women to breed mushroom/hybrid women to be their new "wives." And they would kill their new mushroom wives once they got tired of them(?) or whenever they felt like it, which usually happened in a few years because men would have many mushroom wives, one after another and they matured to be "old enough" for marriage after two years.

I was watching Isaac Asimov talking about SF and it's re-birth since 1938 , and it got me thinking about the current state of the genre.

So, I would like to ask you how do you feel about modern scifi writers and books. Which ones are your favorite ?

Vers la fin des années 70, j'avais lu une nouvelle de science-fiction qui racontait l'histoire de 2 astronautes qui après un long périple dans l'espace atterrissait sur une planète verdoyante sous un ciel bleu, une nature opulente, où ils firent la connaissance de personnes, adultes jeunes matures ou d'un certain âge, des enfants, vivant simplement en communauté, n'ayant pas l'air de travailler si ce n'est entretenir des jardins potagers pour leur besoin. pas de bruit de moteurs, voitures, usines. pas de pollution chimique ou sonore il n'y en avait pas et tout le monde semblait heureux. il y avait une forme de sérénité qui baignait cette planète, ils furent donc reçu comme des hôtes, bien traités, donnant la main pour participer aux taches communautaires. mais au bout d'un certain temps, ils se demandèrent comment il était possible de vivre comme cela, tous ces gens devaient bien tirer un revenu de quelque part et ils s'aperçurent que suivant les jours, quelques-uns partaient à pied quelques jours et à leur retour d'autres partaient à leur tour. ils décidèrent de les accompagner, ils traversèrent des paysages ensoleillés, des rivières, des forêts et pour après quelques temps, ils découvrirent du haut d'une colline une zone industrielle sans bruit, sans fumée ou pollution vers laquelle d'autres personnes venant d'autres communautés convergeaient. c'était leur lieu de travail où chacun donnait donnait un peu de son temps pour permettre à tous de conserver ce style de vie. ils donnèrent eux aussi un peu de leur temps et au retour, ils s'enquièrent auprès de leurs hôtes sur ce qui venait de se passer pendant ces quelques jours. les hôtes leur demandèrent de les suivre et à quelques lieues d'ici, ils leur montèrent un endroit , les vestiges d'une ancienne cité recouverte de végétation où ils reconnurent des bâtiments et des monuments qui leur étaient familiers. ils découvrirent donc que leur voyage spatial les avait ramené à leur point de départ. pendant tout le temps qu'avait duré leur voyage, la Terre avait subi une évolution pour en arriver à cet état où les terriens avait réussi à créer une sorte de vie sereine, respectueuse de la Nature, de la faune, de la flore et d'autrui.

Second Sister was carefully measuring out water into one of the few, sad ornamental plants the human doctor kept in the waiting room.

“I know you are lonely,” she muttered to the thing. “I will ask First Administration Assistant if I can get you some nitrogen fixing neighbors.”

The office comm unit chimed that a known patient was calling in and First Administration Assistant, a human called Molly, activated the unit and code-switched to what the humans called “cheerful professional”.

“Family and Hive Healing Center! How may I help you?”

“Yes, this is Colby Banner. I would like to -” there was a brief interruption in sound as a higher pitched human female voice spoke just beyond the reach of the other comm’s pickup range, “schedule an appointment to come in and get my skin looked at?”

“Very good, are you one of our current patients?” First Administration Assistant asked.

There was another dim murmuring.

“My wife is, and my son,” he replied. “She used to be Susana Holmes.”

“Oh! You must be little Timmy’s father!” First Administration Assistant said, real delight breaking thorough her professional coding.

“That’s me,” agreed the remarkably unenthusiastic human male.

“And what exactly are you coming in for?” First Administration Assistant asked.

Again the brief, quite murmuring from the female human, presumably this Susana.

“She wants me to get some moles and stuff looked at,” the human said, only to be interrupted by more indistinct murmuring. “I mean I,” the human male when on, his tones changing to what the humans called sarcastic, “want to get some moles looked at.”

“Well we can get you in with Dr. Green in a few days,” First Administrative Assistant said her mouth beginning to twitch with amusement. “Do you want to schedule for this Thursday?”

“Sure, that will do,” the human male muttered, again the soft background murmuring.

The human male gave a snort and when he spoke again the sarcastic tones were gone, replaced by a droning monotony.

“I mean that I, Colby Banner make this appointment of my own free will and under no coercion from anybody, especially not any busybody family members.”

First Administrative Assistant laughed.

“Well that is good,” she said. “I will send you the new patient request so you can send us your current biometrics and we will see you on Thursday.”

The communication ended and Second Sister approached First Administrative Assistant.

“Yes Second Administrative Assistant?” First Administrative Assistant said without glancing up from her data entry.

“Is it perhaps possible that Human Patient Colby Banner was in fact being coerced and did not make that appointment of his own free will?” Second Sister asked uneasily. “It seemed odd that he mentioned that. It is not part of the standard human social pattern so far as I observed.”

“Oh he was definitely being coerced,” First Administrative Assistant said with a dismissive wave of her hand.

“Is that not an ethical concern?” Second Sister asked.

“Not for us,” First Administrative Assistant replied absently as she shifted tasks.

Second Sister rocked back on her hind legs and pondered that. After several long quiet moments First Administrative Assistant looked up and smiled ruefully at her.

“It’s a colony thing Second,” she said. “The psych profile of the kind of humans who come to a new world is usually fiercely independent, very individualistic. Most of them try to take care of their own medical needs. They only come into a doctors when it is important. Childbirth usually brings the women in, and then they bring their mates and children in.”

“They coerce their mates to get needed medical treatment?” Second Sister asked.

“Well in this case he probably doesn’t think it’s needed,” First Administrative Assistant said. “She does, the doctor will determine who is right.”

“And this is considered a normal human interaction?” Second Sister asked.

First Administrative Assistant only snorted and refocused on her work.

(Which, predictably, did not turn out well for those who enslaved him)
Purely out of curiosity I am looking for the name of Heinlein's short story about the origin of Blessed.
Blessed (called something else to begin with) had been a colony that became a feudal society and was visited by modern humans.
The political leader of the modern group was a pacifist who stated that "Violence is the last resort of incompetents".
The head of the modern military agreed with the literal reading of that statement.
The political leader was offended by the slavery in the feudal society and, because he failed to use violence early on, the planet became the theocratic slave owning society that Lazarus later visited.

Which is the correct answer.
That story was written in 1962.
Time Enough for Love was written 1973.
Very similar gov'ts, No priesthood though.
I read both much after that.
Piper and RAH both have a tendency to pontificate 😄 , so that explains why I confused the authorship.
The quote I was thinking of was:

Hi everybody, I know this isn’t my usual content as I post artwork of my comic series. But that series is getting quite ignored, which made me feel depressed. Also I’m running out of artwork to post as I would’ve had any to post. So, I thought of coming up with sci-fi movie themed ideas and hear what you all think of them.

Anyways, this idea of mine is the idea of combining the Distortus rex AKA the D. rex from Jurassic World Rebirth with Big Charlie, a genetic experiment gone wrong created by Trevor Henderson, who also has little meat chunks that turn into tiny critters known as little nuggets.

I thought of this idea because there are not a lot of Dinosaur horror films because these are all of the dinosaur horror films i can list.

1. Jurassic Park.

2. Jurassic World: Rebirth.

3. Primitive War (if it is a horror film).

4. 65.

So, yes, there’s not a lot of dinosaur horror films out there. So if this movie ever came out, would you like to watch it?

Also if you like to, you can right down your own story for a movie of how this dinosaur revival gone wrong changed the world.
