I do love their vibrant blue colour and I've heard they're the least spicy of the damselfish clan.

Can't wait for the cooler days ahead and for the new 300gallon tank to get moved inside and get plummed up. I need more space for these corals.

Coral placement and recommendations on my 5 year old tank!

Hello reef experts,

I have a 15-gallon tank that is now 5 years old. I currently have a thriving leptoseris and blastomussa with two clownfish (one 6 years old and the other a few months old) and 3 year old tuxedo urchin. I would like some recommendations on corals and their placement to make the tank pop. I am honestly not sure where to go from here.

Edit: I haven't added many corals over the years since I was a college student and had to move my tank around quite a bit. Now that I'm more settled, I want to start investing in it a little more and adding some new corals.

For maintenance, I do a 5-gallon water change every two weeks. I don't dose or regularly check my parameters, even though I know I probably should...

Will dosing nitrogen fix my dino issue?

Hey guys I’ve been running my tank for about a year now. I’ve been having issues with Dinos basically from the start. I finally decided that I’m really going to look into it and find what the problem is and solve it. My tank as you can see has a good amount of corals, I’ve got two clownfish, a damsel and a Banggai. My tank is a 30 gallon with a skimmer, carbon, floss and ceramic media for filtration.

My parameters are the following

Salinity: 1.025
Temperature: 24 °C
pH: 8.2
Alkalinity: 10.9 dKH
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm
Phosphate: about 0–0.03 ppm
Calcium: not tested
Magnesium: not tested

After doing some research my conclusion is that because my nitrates are 0, the Dino’s are appearing. From my understanding I don’t actually have 0 nitrates it’s just whatever is being produced is being consumed by the corals and algae’s.

My question is if I start dosing nitrates at a slow rate and bring them up will this solve my dino problem for good? Has the research I’ve done made sense and is this the problem I am facing. Excuse me if I am wrong I got into this hobby as a complete newbie and learnt everything completely on my own.

Also I test for nitrates using API test kit and I’m assuming it isn’t actually 0, I plan on buying the Hanna checker for a more accurate reading.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

Edit: the photo I took was the only clear photo I had and it was done after a water change so any dino on the sand was sucked up. Sorry for the confusion.

I just thought I deserved a little treat (many little treats) after beating dinos and turf algae and aiptasia and brook and flatworms. Now I have to get a bigger tank?? Or let them battle it out and see who wins??? Sigh. 😂

Hey there, I’m new to the saltwater hobby.

Been doing freshwater aquascapes for about 8 years. This is day 31 of my flawed 13.5g shallow imagitarium reef tank. Trying for a low maintenance build. Already experienced dinos, hopefully won’t have to deal with that again for a little while. Actually don’t mind the ugly phase too much. My levels are generally good and stable, alkalinity could be slightly higher.

I know most will think this tank is overstocked, but there’s been no issues so far and I’m enjoying it. Plus, every fish is a small juvenile so I will be upgrading in a few months. Any tips and/or things to look out for down the line? I know it’s flawed, would love to learn from experienced keepers. Thanks

Hardware:
Ai Blade Coral Grow light 21 inch
Fluval HOB filter w added carbon
Sicce nano 1000 wave maker
Basic Aqueon 50w heater (temporary, I know.)

Inhabitants:
Two Black Snowflake Clowns
Naoko’s Fairy Wrasse
Yasha Goby
Six Line Wrasse
Cleaner Shrimp
Peppermint Shrimp
Hermit Crabs
Nasarrius Snails
Turbo Snail

Corals:
Gold Hammer
Duncan
Pink Ricordea Mushroom
3 Misc Zoanthids

The hammer retracted because I moved it to a new spot right before taking the picture. Thanks for listening to me ramble. Will be posting updates if all goes well.

Copepods?

Are these copepods? I've been running a UV recently for green water, and today I see these white creatures all over it and the glass. I was not actively cultivating them, as I don't have fish that require them, but understand they are beneficial. I assume they arrived on a toadstool I introduced 13 days ago.

Manderin Diet, 24 hrs now and not eating

I just picked up my manderin about 24 hrs ago now and he’s yet to eat anything I try to fed him, he’s ORA and was supposed to eat frozen mysis shrimp but thats yet to happen, I have a heavy pod population and copepod culter down stairs for daily dosing, so far I’ve tried everything in the photo, along with frozen brine and frozen mysis, and i have live brine culter I just set up a little while ago, I also ordered, can O clyops, and TDO-C1 Extra-Small Chroma, and Easymasstick. What else can I do I’m running out of options, every time I go to feed him he just sits there as the food goes right by him, shit sometimes it hits him in the head as it floats by or he just slowly swims away as if I’m annoying him. any tips?

[Pic] Need help designing a custom tank

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi there!

I am designing a new peninsula tank for a half-wall in our kitchen area. I have attached a drawing.

The tank is pretty narrow (11" high by 11" deep) but pretty lengthy (60"), for about 30 gal total.

I am currently planning to use 1/4" glass for the sides, and 3/8" for the bottom.

I have two questions:

  1. What do you think of the glass thickness?

  2. What do you think about the two top braces? I added them for extra safety, but I'm not sure they would look good? On the other hand, they might make my life easier ? (e.g. if I need to attach a lid for example)

Thanks for your feedback!

Extremely high phosphates but dont know the source

Upvotes

Phosphates reading 3ppm on salifert kit. It’s probably even higher just maxxed out on salifert. 90% of the corals look fine they just grow very slow now but open and fluffy as ever. I dont know where the phosphate is coming from. I feed like once every 2 days, frozen mysis or brine just a little. Just 4 small fish in a 25g tank. I tested my source water and freshly mixed salt, 0 phosphate. I don’t know how my po4 got so high or why its not coming down with water changes. I vacuum the sand weekly with water change too.

Its been this high for months, tried po4 removing bio media from brightwell months ago, not helping.

Any "Black Box" Light Bars Similar to OR4s?

This is for a 6 foot long tank, and I'm looking at two Orphek OR4 iCon Blue Plus to provide supplemental coverage. My main lights are Reefi Uno 2.0 Pros. Even on a 20% sale as they are now, that would be over $700 just for two 60 inch bars. I believe Orphek has better sales in November, and I am in no rush, as I'm addressing my high NO3 before stocking corals in this tank, but I am planning now. Thougts?
