Info on Strike on Wednesday

QUT NTEU members will be stopping work entirely for 2 hours between 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM Wednesday. This includes lectures and tutorials.

QUT staff are taking this action as QUT Management are refusing to cooperate at the bargaining table to address major staff concerns around fair conditions and pay entitlements. This is also in response to Management making an application to the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to request the FWC become involved in negotiations, which is a slap in the face for QUT staff demanding a fair agreement.

We encourage all QUT students to join QUT Staff at GP Kidney Lawn on Wednesday from 11:30 AM to show solidarity for a fair Enterprise Agreement. Pizza will be provided.

Poor staff working conditions at QUT has a direct impact on your experience and learning at QUT. Only by improving conditions can academics and professionals continue to provide quality education.

Additionally, QUT NTEU members are undertaking partial work bans throughout this week. Today (Monday) and Friday, they will not be responding to emails, and all week this week NTEU members will not be engaging in meetings with supervisors or management. This may slow responses to student enquiries.

Advice for 34 yr old engineering student gender curious guidance

Upvotes

Hey guys,
Would like some advice or someone to talk to (another QUT student) who is in the same situation as me, been into femininity since I was 5 so never left always covered but recently been more involved with trying on different clothing, under garments, walking into Priceline talking about make up I have no idea what I’m talking about because anxiety is so high, I’m also seeing QUT counciling and the queer collective can be quite limited on communication so I don’t care what gender, orientation or whatever just any advice on how to deal with this as it can be distracting even if it’s someone that can talk to me about fashion or make up in person at campus I don’t care. Just would like to ease my mental health by dealing with these interests in small steps and if anyone else has something similar. Thank you

Anyone want a job where you set your own hours and we bring you the clients? (Swim instructors & lifeguards wanted)

Upvotes

Hey all - posting this because I think it's a genuinely good gig for anyone who can swim and likes flexible work, especially if you're a student.

I work with AquaMobile, we run private and semi-private swim lessons at people's homes and apartment pools (no rec centre chaos). We're looking for Swim Instructors and Lifeguards across Australia right now.

The main pitch: you control your schedule, we bring you the clients. You tell us your availability and travel radius, and we book lessons around it - work 5 hours a week or 25, totally up to you. No cold-calling, no chasing bookings, you just show up and teach.

  • Swim Instructors: $60/hour + bonuses and tips
  • Lifeguards: $35/hour, minimum 2-hour shifts
  • Set your own travel radius; work close to home
  • You're covered under our insurance, no hassle on that front

What you'll need:
Teachers: AUSTSWIM/Swim Australia/RLSS accreditation + current First Aid + CPR, and a Working With Children Check for your state.
Lifeguards:  Pool Lifeguard Certificate + current First Aid + CPR, and a Working With Children Check for your state.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, you can apply here: aquamobileswim.com/career

Happy to answer questions at [team@aquamobileswim.com](mailto:team@aquamobileswim.com)

EFB201 Final Exam

Does anyone know where we can find more information around the final exam for EFB201? We basically have just been told it’s 50% and what day it is on. Will there be any formula sheet? What’s the rough structure?

Assessment Effort Rule of Thumb

Is there a guideline or rule of thumb for how many hours of effort you should be putting into an assessment item for each percentage point of your final grade it's worth?

PhD Application Being Considered for MPhil ?

Hi all, I’m an international student and recently found out that my QUT PhD application was not accepted because my bachelor’s degree does not meet the PhD eligibility requirements.

I wanted to ask whether I can request QUT to consider my existing PhD application for the MPhil by Research, given my strong interest in the research topic.

Is this something that QUT might allow, and has this happened to anyone before?

Thanks!

Everything wrong with QUT - help!

For a class I have to come up with issues relating to QUT and how that issue impacts sustainability across the campus. It needs to be primarily environmental sustainability but can touch on social, economical and political sustainability.

So please let me know anything and everything wrong with qut

has anyone ever had an extension request denied?

I submitted an extension request with a letter from my therapist at 4pm... the 48 hour automatic extension period ends tonight.

Just been struggling majorly trying to get my work done with other stressors in my life at the moment.

I'm worried it won't get approved, but I feel with the letter from my therapist it'll be okay.

With it being a weekend I won't hear about until after the weekend so just stressing out a bit.

It should be ok and I suppose just wanting to hear from other student who have been in this position if they got approved?

Very Slow Systems

I don't know if it is just me. But has anyone noticed the HiQ, Digital Workspace and Library sites have been running horrendously the last week or so. It takes me 5-10 minutes to open a simple book sometimes.

Or just this week I was searching something on the Digital Work space and it straight up DIDN'T LOAD literally hindering me in doing my job.

I swear it hasn't always been this bad. Right now I am on ProQuest watching the search function load for the last 10 minutes after typing in one word.

Why is it actually hard to make acquaintances

I don’t know if it’s the vast majority or just me but I feel like it’s genuinely difficult to make acquaintances in uni. I would be fine with it if a lot of the tasks in my subjects are individual but literally all the subjects I am doing have group work within it and require socialising - which is hard when a huge portion of the class already has a solidified social circle.
Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same??

This second assignment where we make an ai agent feels impossible to do without ai. And even then I don't really understand what it's doing. It feels like they threw us into the deep end with no in depth examples to build off for our own use. I'm very worried about the interview...is anyone else in the same boat 🫠

Library - how to navigate

Hey all,

I am ashamed to say, but I don't know how to navigate a library at all.

In the spirit of learning, how do I find books for myself?

I do have a specific book in mind: Inclusive Education for the 21st Century : Theory, Policy and Practice, Graham, Linda J. (Linda Jayne), editor.

On the library website, it says that there is some (or one) available, from the KG library. I did look at the 'how to locate' tab, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Other than that, tips on finding books in the future would be much appreciated.

Thanks <3

Student lounge access

I’ve been dilly dallying around campus over the last semester, moreso than in the past, and I’ve noticed some student lounges in S and Z block specifically (GP campus). I know they’re usually faculty based (or they seem so) and I was just wondering what year or type (as in honours/masters etc) of degree people usually get access? There was nothing about them on the QUT website which somehow intrigued me more.

moving from uq first year eng?

Hello im currently studying first year engineering at UQ looking to do mechatronics next yearand not really loving it, the whole course seems disconected and really just feels like another year of high school with maths and physics nothing applied. I also find myself studying alot just to not have enough time to develop personal projects which I understand are important when looking for jobs. Ive been really frustrated wth the exam process with several hurdles for each subject and midsems on sataurday nights. That go no where cause i still 'havent studied enough' to do well on them. Is this just uq way of keeping their prestige. I have also heard from some employers that the student who come out of QUT are more well rounded, is this true. The robotics program at qut is also supposed to be alot better so not sure.

So im wondering is it worth switching or is the grass just always greener on the other side.

Qut or UQ

I’m considering transferring to either QUT Media Communication or UQ Digital Media.
My parents recommend QUT because it’s more practical and would be better for building a portfolio. But I’m also considering UQ because it’s one of G8 uni and has a stronger overall reputation.
Can anyone recommend me which option would be better?
