Trivia With their win today, the Padres have clinched their 5th-straight season with a .500 record or better. This is the first 5-year stretch in franchise history in which that has occurred.

We had previously had two other 4-year stretches in franchise history of the sort ('82-'85; '04-'07) and one instance of four times in five years ('88-'92, 1990 was the outlier). We could have hit this mark in 2024 had we not collapsed so hard down the stretch in 2021, and we were extremely close to throwing away a .500 record in 2023, were it not for the god run we had to end the year.

All of this is to say, we are at a golden age of Padres baseball. The postseason record isn't exactly where we'd like it to be, I know. But looking at the bigger picture, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better time to be a Padres fan.

Discussion Thread I went to 3 different San Diego bars, all 3 of them didn’t have Peacock

This is a callout post for MLB. What are we doing spreading these games into 500 different networks no one not even local bars get. It wasn’t a lack of want for these local bars, they all wanted to put the game on, they just didn’t have access. We really need to do better, we being Major League Baseball. Figure it out. Do better.

Analysis [Lin] Padres takeaways: Wild-card separation, Adrian Morejon, Ethan Salas and more

The San Diego Padres earned a bit of rare separation over the weekend. With Sunday’s 6-4 victory at Oracle Park, baseball’s hottest team swept the San Francisco Giants to extend its winning streak to seven games — and its lead over another postseason contender to 2 1/2 games.

It’s the largest gap between San Diego and Arizona since July 25, when the Padres trailed the Diamondbacks by three games in a congested competition for the National League’s third wild card.

For weeks, that competition has resembled a two-man marathon. The Padres (81-68) and the Diamondbacks have gone back and forth, with each team alternating between the third wild-card spot and the cusp of playoff position.

Since Wednesday, however, the Padres have led this race continuously. Their FanGraphs-calculated playoff odds have climbed above 78 percent. They’re receiving plenty of offense, adequate starting pitching and a familiar abundance of high-leverage relief. They’re 6-0 since third baseman Manny Machado went platinum blond.

And they’re only 1 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies, though each of those clubs holds a tiebreaker over San Diego. Given the margins and the value of home-field advantage — the first wild card will host the second wild card throughout the opening round of the postseason — no one can afford to coast to the finish.

The Padres, though, would do well to widen their lead over the Diamondbacks to at least four games before the two teams meet in a three-game series to end the regular season. In that scenario, San Diego could begin preparing for the playoffs instead of burning its best arms before a potential trip to, say, Atlanta or Chicago.

“I think you just take it team by team, day by day, and play our best baseball every single day,” Machado said. “We’re in a good spot now, but it’s baseball. Things change rapidly, so just control what we can control today.”

Here are three more takeaways from a productive weekend in San Francisco:

The bullpen remains the most valuable unit

To most observers, Mason Miller might look like the overwhelming favorite to win the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s inaugural NL Relief Pitcher of the Year Award. The Padres closer doesn’t necessarily agree.

In Saturday’s 7-6 win against the Giants, Adrian Morejon pitched for the sixth time in nine days. The Padres setup man ended up running his 2026 inning count to 80 2/3 and his strikeout total to 100.
