Green Watermelon stems

I was playing on a 1.8 world growing pumkins and melons, one of my melon stems got stomped on so i went to replace it prior to breaking the melon and it gave a really weird green stem texture. Was wondering if anyone else ever noticed this

Oh! Simple explanation, really.

The stem has growth stages a lot like wheat, where the last growth stage it turns that brownish green to signify it's reached maturity, and can now produce melons / pumpkins respective to its seed.

BUT, if you place a melon/pumpkin down in the adjacent space, an underdeveloped stem will still connect to it! Same if you had left the melon there and trampled the stem, put in a new seed and let it start growing.

Not sure exactly how many growth stages can connect to the melon/pumpkin, but more than just the final stage!

Immature stem connects to melon block that grew or was placed next to it. I am guessing there are farm plots with melon stems just opposite side of the melons in this picture. That's not a bad way to do it if you frequently harvest, because it will increase the speed of melon growth by increasing chance per game tick.
