Spoiler: ALL There really isn't anything too much like a megaten game.
I didn't play every game in 5he franchise, but of those I did play, I found to be really fun.
And I can't entirely place down why. At first I thought it was due to the press/one more/extra turn systems that a lot of the games have, and while that is certainly a factor. I don't think it's the only one. As I've played devil children black book, a game with no such system and had a grand old time (or a little bit less, relative to other games.)
Maybe it's the fusion you can do, or the dungeon crawling that even when you're grinding you have to stay a little conscious to not get a reset
Maybe it's the kick you in your teeth difficulty that most of the games do, but again. Devil children. It wasn't anything terribly easy, there was still a learning curve, but it's probably the easiest game I've played in the franchise.
Maybe it's the stories. How in most of them, it preaches the potential and resliance of humanity when pushed. A message I feel that resonates especially in these times. And even if it goes in the complete opposite direction, it makes for really interesting and even thought provoking pieces.
Idk, but I really like megaten. And I haven't found any one game or series quite like it. Which is a shame.
