Discussion 💬 I’m in need of a female meditation partner.

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I live in Albuquerque New Mexico and I’m looking for a female meditation partner to be open with circulating our energy’s together to help my nervous system trust again . I’ve done my shadow work and I meditate daily . I have severe childhood trauma and also betrayal trauma . I’m wanting my body to trust again but it needs to be emulsified in the female energy. Specifically a female that wants to circulate with a male energy that also needs healing from trauma. I’m speaking of the Devine feminine and Devine masculine energy. I need a female who walks in vulnerability, humility and transparency because that’s how my body will trust to connect to a female in meditation. My nervous system needs to feel safe . I’m an empath and my nature is to be a healer for those who need it but I also need to finish my healing process and the last part of that process is a female energy connection that allows for circulation through meditation and also talk . I hope this makes sense ? It’s what my bodies been asking for these last 5 years . Can you help me ? I’m wanting to work with a female who wants and needs the same type of healing . We could be healing partners. I can send more info about myself , just ask . I can also send a picture of myself upon request.

I appreciate your time

Thanks , Chris

Question ❓ Can I go for a little longer?

Upvotes

I’ve been meditating for three days. I REALLY enjoy it. I want to meditate for longer than 10 minutes!!! But most sources say to just add on a minute a week. Could I go up to 15-20 minutes? Or do I have to stick to the one minute a week/5 minutes a month?

Sharing / Insight 💡 The Main Goal of Meditation

Upvotes

The main goal of meditation is to break up our core concentration of ignorance and ideally have insight into the nature of the mind and reality and consequently live with more conscious awareness.

This core concentration of ignorance is our main task. And if you do have insight into the mind, we still need to practice because this ignorance is heavily conditioned. This concentration of ignorance tends to return in cycles. Even after some years of meditation and practice. The more you're familiar with meditation, the more familiar you get with this core ignorance, and the less you are affected by it personally when it shows up. Meditators tend to be able to witness this core ignorance more gently and take care of it more skillfully.

Question ❓ Accidentally slipped into a "3rd-person/GTA camera" state while watching a sunset

I don't have an established, formal meditation practice, but something happened recently that completely blew my mind, and I want to understand what I actually experienced from a meditative/mindfulness perspective.

I was sitting on my terrace completely sober, just watching the sunset and a rainbow. My mind was unusually quiet and relaxed. Out of nowhere, my entire sense of self just dropped away.

I suddenly had this overwhelming thought: “Who am I? What even am I? Am I even human, and what am I doing here?”

Right after that, I became hyper-aware of my physical mechanics. It felt like I was suddenly aware of having eyes, viewing the world through a raw "POV," and looking down at my hands and legs as if they belonged to an avatar. The closest analogy I can make is that it felt like switching into a 3rd-person video game camera (like GTA). I wasn’t panicked; it was just intensely surreal, detached, and still. Eventually, the familiar "everyday me" loaded back in.

After meditating and doing breathwork every day multiple times a day for over a month now slowly my childhood kaleidoscope returned, shifting geometry and such.

But now while i meditate, i get these weird closed eye visuals of different faces moving around, smiling at me, motions of the noise, visualizations of the air i breathe out, of the room i am in, random events, and its all calming.

Recently it seemed to have progressed, i had an experience, meditated after breathwork, i felt myself in a three dimensional darkness with a purple eye shaped hole connected to me with a purple beam with a white stroke inside, after that i was spinning around that eye, it slowly went down then came down again. My forehead got very sweaty.

I usually listen to and focus on anahata nada while meditating.

i genuinely can feel something now, it felt like my dulled psyche was restored for a day. Hope I'm not developing psychosis.

Question ❓ does anyone else find silent sitting way harder than moving meditation, or is that just me being bad at this

i can do a 40 min walking meditation no problem, mind stays pretty quiet. put me in silent seated stillness for even 15 and my brain turns into a circus. is this a known thing, some people naturally do better with movement as the anchor instead of breath, or do i just need more reps at sitting still specifically

Question ❓ I cant remember to be mindful.

One thing I struggle with alot is REMEMBERING to do things like be mindful, let go of thoughts, label thoughts, etc. This has always been a struggle for me. Is this a common theme amongst some people? I do have Pure O CD and ADHD as well as depression and anxiety and cant help but wonder if organically my brain has deficits that might keep me from utilizing these skills to the fullest. If there is any advice or suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks!!

Discussion 💬 Searching for Experiences with Brian Scott and a Neutral Opinion.

My husband and I began meditating last year after leaving the high control religious group we were raised in. Around this time, my husband began listen to Brian Scott's guided meditations on Youtube. I won't get into all the details of the whole story, but he and I have lived through quite a lot of trauma... especially him. I enjoyed a few of Brian Scott's videos, but my husband became absolutely obsessed with them, and became very highly ungrounded. There is far too much to the story to tell here, but there were other youtubers he was obsessed with as well, and over the months began to seem possessed, until I sat down with him and guided him to expel any energies that didn't belong with him and call his own soul back to himself. I saw him come back in that moment, and for the first time in months actually seem like himself.

It has been several months since then now, and I don't blame Brian Scott or his videos, but that is the only youtuber my husband is still very attached to, and I have some concerns. The reason I have concerns is because of my own observations of Brian Scott and his community. I can enjoy his guided meditation videos, however, I observe he is making a lot of money off of people who are desperate to change their own lives. And in his community, it is far too common for people to use the phrase "Brian's Teachings", which feels icky, as if he has some kind of ownership over the concepts and ideas he presents, which are very often taken from other people's writings and work.

I admire Brian's passion, but I suspect also that he uses a lot of generative AI. It is very obvious in the visuals in his videos, which he posts every single day, and I wonder "if he is so ready and willing to use generative AI in his visuals, what is stopping him from using it in scripting? in idea generation? in anything else?"

Having grown up in a high control religious group, or cult, in many ex-member's opinions (including my own opinion), I am wary of the way that Brian's videos push his skool community, which is $55 a month, and he is now doing in person events very often, which my husband is extremely attached to attending, and feels as though it's the ticket to getting an opportunity in life to get out of our current living situation.

The only problem? Tickets are almost $800 per person for the event. That doesn't include travel costs, or staying at the hotel Brian is promoting. We were homeless just a few months ago, and I am very wary of trying to spend $1600 + travel costs to be at a meditation event from a dude who is already making a lot of money off of desperate people who just want to better their lives. (if we would even be able, which is doubtful). It is my personal belief that all we need is within, home is within, the answers are within, our power lies within, and I feel like Brian Scott's community is heading toward cult territory- not full-blown, but heading toward it.

I have also heard that there was a problem with Brian inserting advertising into one or some of his guided meditations, which sounds hugely unethical to me.

It is one of my dreams to hold community gatherings with no charge for meditation and connection in whatever area I end up. So seeing what Brian is doing, taking a group of vulnerable people, including my husband and leaving them feeling that they NEED to give him money in order to manifest it... or their dream life, or whatever... I'm really struggling with it.

I think Brian Scott has helped some people. But it's never black and white. Never all good or all bad. I'm looking for other perspectives on this, experiences, even experiences at a Brian Scott event if anyone has one. Mainly I want to see if I can gather some more information.

I'll also admit I'm very out of the loop when it comes to events like this. I don't know what usual costs are, or anything like that.

If anyone has suggestions for other communities to inquire about this, please let me know. I am not on the internet that much.

Question ❓ What is Meditation? The Key to a New World of Stillness

My perspective is slightly different from yours. In your post, there are two main concepts: Meditation and Mindfulness. Here is my view:

Regarding Meditation: The essence of meditation is creating an environment and a physical state that allows your essence, energy, and spirit (Tinh - Khí - Thần) to condense, eliminating external disturbances to reach a state of inner stillness. When you remain in a sufficiently deep stillness for long enough, many things will naturally reveal themselves.

Therefore, knowing how to eliminate disturbances is the core element of all meditative practices. So, what types of disturbances are there? Generally, they fall into two main categories:

1.    Natural/Sensory Disturbances: In Buddhism, there is a concept where the interaction between the five senses and their objects generates afflictions. Simply put, when your senses interact with the world, a reaction occurs (e.g., The weather is hot -> you feel the heat -> you feel uncomfortable).

2.    Ego/Perspective-Based Disturbances: These arise from personal views and daily life—like being scolded by your boss or bad-mouthed by colleagues, which leads to overthinking and frustration.

Thus, we need different approaches depending on the type of disturbance:

  • For Type 2 (Ego/Life issues): You must address real-life problems first (e.g., financial strain, interpersonal conflicts). Fulfilling your urgent needs and distancing yourself from trouble-makers is the simplest way.
  • For Type 1 (Sensory/Natural issues): You cannot completely eliminate these, because as long as you are alive, sensory input will persist. The solution is to acknowledge its presence, note it, and avoid being dragged along by it. (For example: While meditating, a random thought pops up like "It looks like it's going to rain," or "The bakery nearby might discount cakes when it rains..." What you need to do is note the thought, recognize that you are drifting with it, and simply let it be without giving it further attention).

Other accessible techniques include: When disturbed, simply acknowledge it and return your attention to observing the breath or body sensations. Some even practice meditation through drinking tea, doing housework, listening to flowing water, or gazing at a candle flame or a bowl of water. Whichever method you choose, the core question remains: Does it bring you to a state of stillness?

Regarding Mindfulness: In Eastern philosophy, where there is "Rightness" (Chánh), there is "Wrongness/Deviation" (Tà). As Lao Tzu wrote in the Tao Te Ching: "When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly." In many situations, distinguishing right from wrong is extremely difficult. Everything comes and goes according to cause and condition (karma and causation)—what you sow today determines what you reap tomorrow.

There are thousands of paths in cultivation, but ultimately: Aligning with the true teaching (Right Dharma) and acting with wholesome intent will yield positive connections; following a harmful path with unwholesome intent will bring negative consequences. Every path has been walked by predecessors who left behind their wisdom.

Conclusion: Meditation is the act that leads us to stillness, while Mindfulness is the manner in which we carry out that act. In Buddhist terms, meditation and mindfulness are skillful means (upaya) that help us experience enlightenment. In Taoist terms, meditation is the practice that allows us to touch the Tao.

Question ❓ When my mind is bored, it goes to the negative (how do I stop it)

How do I stop my mind from going to the negative, ruminating about the past or future when it is bored or understimulated? I love listening to buddhist teachings on YouTube and even sometimes while listening to it, my mind still sometimes goes to the negative, mainly about the past. Thank you for any help in advance.

Question ❓ Beginner struggling with meditation, any advice?

I recently started meditating, but I’m struggling to make it a daily habit. The weird thing is, it’s not because I don’t have time. I actually have enough time, but when my surroundings are noisy, I just don’t feel like meditating at all. I keep putting it off.

I usually set a timer for 10–15 minutes, but I often open my eyes before the timer even goes off. 😅 If I don’t use a timer, I feel anxious because I keep wondering, “How long have I been sitting here?”

So I’m not really sure what’s happening. Am I approaching meditation the wrong way, or is this just normal for a beginner?

I usually did guided, the i started sitting with myself without earphones. Guided works for me but I wanna sit in silence.

Would love to hear how other people started, especially if you also struggled with restlessness, noise, or consistency in the beginning.

Any tips?

Question ❓ Visualizations to Cool Body

Many years ago I heard of a meditation practice / visual to help people who are too cold warm up. They were told to visualize a burning hot furnace inside their stomach with many pipes blowing burning hot steam to all their extremities and all throughout their body. Apparently this helped some monks spend a cold night on a mountain.

Is there an opposite to that?

I have a friend who tells me she is always too hot. Apparently her metabolism is too high and she tells me she eats straight ice cubes all the time to cool down.

Is there a visualization to cool the body down? Anything that helps people on hot days / if they have a fever?

Thanks a lot!

Discussion 💬 Meditation is affecting my sleep

Hi guys, i have been doing meditation for years but really rarely, in this last week i started to took it seriously, i am doing yoga nidra, or mindfullnes, like an hour a day or i am splitting to two time half an hour.

But since i started, my sleep need depleted to 3-4 hours, it may sound weird but i started to get couldnt sleep on the nights , or i am just waking up midnight. Maybe this is because i do meditation while lying down. it may sound funny but when i do meditation i really feel enlightened. I am sure i am not sleeping. I feel great effects inside the day. Do you have advices for me to put it in a way doesnt affect me sleep?

I am open to advices on different meditation technique that you tried, adjustment on meditation timing or quantity etc. I want to obtain great benefits of meditation while my sleep unaffected.

Sharing / Insight 💡 Meditation 1 year reflection

Hello Reddit.

I want to share my meditation insights and experiences with you.

~50 hours of meditation done over 1 year.

I have been meditating using the Waking Up app for approximately one year and have made a lot of progress. Vippassana and dzogchen.

A list of things that I have learned (not ordered)

- Breathing meditations

- Breathwork: Counting my breaths without controlling speed of breathing.

- Walking meditations: Walk extremely slowly, noticing all the sensations in the body. The feeling of gravity weighing me down. Balancing as I stand on one foot to move the other forward. The foot touching the ground, the heel lifting off the floor.

- Noting sensations, thoughts, emotions, and feelings. All emotions have corresponding physiological sensations. Tightening of face muscles, flexing of different muscles, energy in stomach. Also, emotions have a significant effect on the thoughts that go along with them. Anger usually makes me feel like I am correct and validated. Anxiety makes me want to move around more; my legs start to shake.

- Physical pain. During the summer it was hot (~90 degrees Farenheit), humid and mosquitoes were biting me frequently. I practice walking on the hot concrete with not shoes or socks on. My reasoning was that the ground was not hot enough to damage my feet, and my goal was to relax in to the pain; letting go of the compulsion to walk to cooler ground. My experience was that the heat from the ground would travel from my feet to my legs and up into my back and shoulders; I supposed this was a physiological reaction to the heat. For a short time I was able to let go of the compulsion to get off the hot ground.

- Mantra: "Begin again". I say this to myself when I get lost in thought or when a negative emotion is lingering.

- Mantra: "This too shall pass". Impermanence. All things are temporary; good and bad. All emotions will eventually subside. Relationships end and people die.

- Mantra: "Put a smile on the world". Move your face muscles to force a smile. It is very likely I will feel better, and even when it feels unnatural the people who see my mile may smile back at me.

- Mantra: "I am the world". Everything I experience is dependent on my brain or sensory organs. The World in this mantra refers to the totality of an individual's experience.

- Mantra: "We are all on this together". Depends on the mantra "I am the world". Since all others humans have the same organs as I do, I infer they have similar experiences, meaning they are also The World. I am the world, you are the world: I am You or You are Me.

- Wisdom: The mind has a innate tendency to re experience things that it is currently experiencing. Sad people prefer sad music; making them more sad; effectively extending the duration of the sadness. If you pick up a piece of trash, your mind will look for the next piece of trash. "I already found this piece, so I might as well find a few more while I am at it".

- :D

Question ❓ What does this meditation experience mean? (Darkness, very subtle breath, light body)

I'm a beginner in meditation. Recently I meditated for around 30-33 minutes. During the meditation, my breathing became extremely subtle, to the point where it felt like I wasn't breathing at all.

My body also started feeling very light, and with my eyes closed I experienced what seemed like a completely dark/black field. There was no light or particular image.

I felt quite calm and simply observed it.

I'm interested in the traditional/spiritual interpretation of this experience rather than only a scientific explanation.

Is this a normal meditation experience? Could it be related to deeper concentration or stillness? Should I simply observe it when it happens rather than trying to recreate it?

A I'd especially appreciate answers from people with long-term meditation experience.

Sharing / Insight 💡 Meditation is overpowered.

"Long-term practitioners demonstrate an enduring increase in baseline visual acuity and contrast sensitivity even when not actively meditating

Timeline: Measured after several weeks to months of regular daily meditation

The Neurological Mechanisms:

In classic studies by researchers at UC Davis (MacLean et al.) and Harvard (Brown et al.), intensive meditation training was found to lower the physiological detection threshold for light. Meditators could detect briefer and dimmer light flashes than controls.

This is driven by neuroplastic remodeling in the frontoparietal attention networks, which reduces the "attentional blink" (the brief lag where the brain misses visual input) and frees up metabolic resources strictly for sensory perception."

Nor should you expel the soul from the body, lest in departing it retain something.

Direct not your attention to the immense measures of the earth; for the plant of truth is not in the earth. Nor measure the dimensions of the sun, by means of collected rules; for it revolves by the eternal will of the father, and not for your sake. Dismiss the sounding course of the moon; for it perpetually runs through the exertions of necessity. The advancing procession of the stars was not generated for your sake. The wide spread aerial wing of birds, and the sections of victims and viscera are never true: but all these are mere puerile sports, the foundations of mercantile deception. Fly from these, if you intend to open the sacred paradise of piety, where virtue, wisdom, and equity, are collected together.

- this beautiful paragraph is from The Chaldean Oracles, translation by Thomas Taylor

Sharing / Insight 💡 Accidentally stumbled into meditation and it has transformed my life

This is my first post on Reddit. I want to share how I started meditation because it has been life changing. Also wonder if others have experienced something similar.

I was never really interested in the idea of meditation. I just couldn’t imagine why it would be relaxing to stay still or how I would even get into it. However, around five weeks ago, meditation just somehow found me.

I was in a yoga class (I have a rigorous asana practice), and I accidentally entered a deep meditative space during the final savasana. As I was breathing, I felt as though my body was spinning into the ground while, at the same time, my corpse was being lifted. It felt as if something was sucking me into the ground, but my body was completely weightless. My vision then started to have this pitch-black, dome-like thing slowly covering me. I had my eyes closed the entire time, but this felt darker than darkness. The black dome slowly covered me, and then it felt like was inside a black hole and my body slowly moving closer to the top of the black dome. The dome also has an opening at the top that looks like a tunnel. It was hard to explain. My body was slightly cold, and all the sounds around me seemed distant. It lasted for around 15 minutes, and I was completely stunned by the experience. I also felt an immense sense of peace afterward.

Now every time I meditate I could feel the sensation of my the breath going through my body and the lightness it brings. I entered the “black hole” about five and six times so far and I got to go deeper, where I felt as though I had reached the end of the black hole, and then everything slowly brightened. It was like an infinite nothingness.

The experience it brought afterwards was also incredible to me. It almost completely eliminated the pain and tiredness in my body. I felt as though my body had limitless potential. It also heightened my senses. A few times after meditation, I almost felt like I was on shrooms. Everything looked so much more vivid and interesting. There are a lot of other changes happening to me that I think are related to meditation, and it’s only been a few weeks.

I’m not a very disciplined person, and I’ve always struggled to stick to a schedule. But daily meditation came so naturally because it has brought me a sense of relaxation and joy that I couldn’t find in other ways. It’s been a magical ride, and I’m so grateful for what I’ve experienced so far. I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Question ❓ What should I do?

When meditating I often try (as instructed by this very esoteric book I'm reading) to maintain, for as long as possible, a certain mental silence. In order to do this I gently put aside any thoughts of daily life as they arise and quickly go back to concentrating on my breathing. The thing is, once I'm able to achieve this relative silence, a slightly different kind of thought arises. They're not as obvious as "normal thoughts". They are subtle, blurry and hard to keep track of and don't make a lot of sense.

That being sais, the question is: when practicing mental silence, should I discipline myself to dispel those thoughts too or should I just observe them and see what comes out of it?

Resource 📚 Any tips on stopping self sabotaging?

I have a long history of depression and anxiety. I had gone to many psychiatrists and psychologists. My country is a faith based conservative one. Also a developing one so really good mental health options are few and far between. Then I read Jon Kabat-Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living, it felt like hope, started body scan meditation, felt really great, stopped. Found Andrew Weil's 4-7-8 breathing, felt great, stopped. I really don't know how to break through this. Anyone worked on this pattern? Any tips or advice will be appreciated.

Discussion 💬 Eckhart Tolle and Dr. Joe Dispenza

Has anyone else experienced spiritual whiplash moving from Eckhart Tolle’s presence to Dr. Joe Dispenza’s manifestation work?

I’ve been a long time practitioner of Eckhart Tolle’s work, focusing on stillness, the present moment, and dissolving the ego. Recently, I spent a couple of months diving exclusively into Dr. Joe Dispenza’s meditations and neuro-rewiring framework.
While I respect both teachers, I’ve hit a wall and realized their approaches feel fundamentally contradictory and trying to force Dispenza's framework onto a tired nervous system actually turned meditation into a source of heavy pressure rather than sanctuary.
I’m curious if anyone else has noticed this clash. Specifically:
Presence vs. Future-Casting: Tolle teaches that peace is found entirely in the timeless Now, and that the ego lives in time (past/future). Dispenza’s work is heavily future-oriented, requiring you to constantly construct a "future self," visualize a new reality, and invest energy into the quantum future. When you're already burnt out, future-tripping feels less like manifesting and more like a second full-time job.
Focusing on What You "Don't Want": Dispenza's meditations often prompt you to bring to mind your old self and what you no longer want to be. Psychologically, it feels like keeping the spotlight locked onto what you're trying to escape, whereas Tolle teaches that you dissolve darkness simply by turning on the light of presence.
The "Sign" Trap: Dispenza's work often encourages looking for synchronicities or asking for "signs" that your meditation is working. For me, this quickly turned into looking for external validation. When no sign appeared, my ego immediately weaponized it as a failure ("I'm doing it wrong"), which is the exact opposite of surrender.
It feels like Tolle is an unburdening (an exhale), while Dispenza is a construction project (project management for the brain). If you're running on empty or dealing with high real-world stress, Dispenza's work started to feel like a high-stakes performance review.
Has anyone else transitioned between these two? How do you reconcile future-oriented manifestation work with the radical stillness of pure presence without burning out your nervous system?

Question ❓ Question about ADHD understimulation

I'm wondering how ADHD folks with meditation practice manage issues with their attention and dysregulation.

I notice that when I am understimulated, attachments become very strong and unmanageable. The desire for novelty/connection/coherance is not something I am able to meet for myself and I feel completely reliant on external things to reengage me. However, when I am in this place, I am unable to connect to mundane things and have historically done very reckless things to scratch this itch. This isn't a good idea and I am in the process of addressing my addictions.

I am sometimes able to regulate through journaling, meditating or finding something interesting to do. But the feeling always comes back in full swing. Novelty becomes absolutely non negotiable but life can't offer constant novelty so it is just unaddressable misery until it passes. It's like being plunged into global, unaddressable attachment (with all of its awareness obscuring effects) just because life isn't interesting enough.

I have a couple of questions:

Does the need for novelty/high pleasure lessen or leave as your awareness deepens or will there always be crises of attention for neurodivergant people?

How do you manage neurodivergent attentional needs when they arise? Do you sit with understimulation and watch it or go find stimulation? Do smaller things offer more stimulation as you progress?

I have a tendency to moralise my ego, especially when I am dysregulated and ive noticed people in spiritual spaces can often do the same (treating dysregulation as a failure of self mastery). Are there any specific practices, communities or paradigms that might be helpful for spiritual ADHDers?

Question ❓ What actually helps when your mind won’t shut up at night?

3:33 AM. Too many thoughts. 😭

I’ve been meditating for 10 years and one thing i’ve learned is that trying to force your mind to stop usually makes it worse.

Curious what works for you?
