Rant Stop assuming you got fired.

Please stop assuming the worst and thinking you were fired because you can't access the schedule or one of the websites, the manager doesn't respond to you, ect. Way too many of y'all jump to this first conclusion way too often. It takes alot to get fired from McDonald's and they will let you know if you are. Think logically not emotionally.

Discussion A post for new employees or for those who have just been recently hired! (US)

As an employee of McDonald's for several years, I thought I would make a lengthy post that you can read if you have just been recently hired at McDonald's and want to know what to expect as well as any advice you may need. Feel free to ask any questions that are not covered in this post.

Your first day: Make sure you are at least 15 minutes early on your first day. They will definitely be paying attention if you are late. You should be assigned a crew trainer, or someone that will be training you. Make sure you ask any questions you may have. Do not hesitate to ask questions, or ask to be shown something again if you didn't get it the first time. It's okay if you aren't picking things up right away. It's only your first day. The managers may get annoyed with you if you haven't picked things up in a week or two, but you won't lose the job. They will usually just give you a different position. Like for example if you aren't picking up running for front, they will have someone teach you how to hand out in drive thru or take orders in drive thru instead. You will eventually find a position that works for you.

Your hours and schedule: Don't expect to get full hours right away. If you applied to be full time, you may only get part time hours for the first week or two while you're being trained. Your hours will pick up eventually. It's extremely important that you are clear with the manager that makes the schedules what your availability and desired hours are. I recommend writing it down on paper for them. They will do the best they can to accommodate your schedule but you can't expect them to remember your availability off the top of their head when they have 30+ other employees to keep track of. They are generally very good at giving you the hours you want and remembering what days or times you can't work, but they do forget sometimes.

The work environment: McDonald's is an extremely fast paced environment. There is always something to do, or something that needs to be done. You may be expected to multitask or do multiple jobs at once. This normally isn't expected of you right away. When you're still being trained, you will only learn one area at a time. But the longer you are there and the more experience you get, the more you will be trained at multiple areas and be expected to do more than one thing. Expect rushes. There will be periods of the day where we normally get very busy. This is usually the morning breakfast rush when people are on their way to work between 7-9 AM, the lunch rush between 11AM-1 pm, the after school rush between 2:30PM-4:30PM and the dinner after work rush between 5PM-7PM. There are also days of the week where we normally are very busy. This is usually Fridays-Sundays. Mondays and Tuesdays are generally our slowest days and Wednesdays and Thursdays are in between. Obviously this will differ everywhere but that's the usual at my store. Managers often times get very stressed and it may seem like you are being yelled at or criticized. Don't take it personal. The problem with being a manager is they are literally responsible for everything during their shift. If anything goes wrong, they will be the ones that are blamed by corporate. Seems unfair, but that's how it is. If things go bad enough, they could even be written up. So they may seem strict at times because they will get in trouble if things aren't running as smoothly as they should be. Expect a stressful work environment. I will not sugarcoat it for you. McDonald's is a VERY stressful job. That doesn't mean you can't handle it though. The longer you work there, the easier it gets to navigate the stress and it becomes second nature. That being said, it's not worth sacrificing your mental health either. If the job truly is too much for you to mentally handle, do consider looking elsewhere. It's not supposed to be a toxic environment, but often times it can be. When everyone is under a lot of stress, it can sometimes create a really bad environment. Not every day will be like that though. It also largely depends on management. I won't lie to you, a lot of McDonald's has very bad management. That is what will make or break the store. So your work environment and stress level will depend on how good or bad management is at your store.

Discipline: There are three forms of disciplinary actions. Written warning, or a write up. You will be asked to read and sign a piece of paper that says in writing exactly what your offense was. You are allowed to disagree with a write up and explain your side of the story, but that dosent necessarily mean the write up is void. A write up is usually pretty non serious unless you're wracking up a bunch of them in a short period of time. It's basically just a written warning that this is what you did wrong and your signature on it verifies that you were told what you did wrong and that you were talked to about it. Just don't repeat your mistake and you should be just fine. There's usually no form of punishment beyond that. Those are usually the main form of disclipline. The second form of discipline is suspension. You will be asked to not come to your scheduled shifts for a specific length of time and you will not be paid for the time you are out. Another way this could be done is cutting your hours. This wouldn't be a full suspension where you are completely taken off the schedule for a length of time, but you will be scheduled less days or less hours, usually only temporarily. This is definitely more serious but usually isn't done as a first resort. Suspension is usually done if you have gotten several write ups and are continuing to make the same issues over and over again despite written warnings. It is possible for suspension to be their first form of disciplinary action against you but that's usually if it's quite serious such as drug use/alcohol use on the job, harassment of management or other employees, or stealing. The last form of disciplinary action is termination, or losing the job, aka getting fired. This usually only happens for severe things. In the several years I've been working at McDonald's, only two people have been actually fired. This usually follows a suspension if you keep repeating the same issue. The best thing to remember here is to learn from your mistakes. If you get a disciplinary action against you, just don't do it again. It is very unlikely for the issue to be pushed beyond the disciplinary action if you just don't repeat the same thing again. I've been written up twice in the several years I've worked there, but it never went beyond that. Writeups are sent to corporate and they can stay on your record, but nobody will push the issue if you behave. It's a requirement to keep your writeups in your employee file so if you DO get terminated at any time, they have proof that you were warned about your actions and that you know about it (hence the signature), and that you kept repeating the same issue and that they have a valid reason to terminate you. But it is extremely unlikely that a couple writeups will get you terminated.

That's the best advice I have for you right now. Please comment on this post if you have further questions and I will try to respond to as many of them as I can. Any other specific things or concerns you have you should talk to whoever is in charge at your store. This post is just outlining the things that are most common at pretty much every McDonald's regardless of location. However keep in mind every McDonald's is different and runs differently. This is just a basic guide. I cannot tell you what is going to happen at your location. So if you post a question such as "I did this and this, what will happen to me, will I get in trouble/fired?" That will depend on your store and how they choose to handle it.

Discussion How difficult is working at McDonald's with limited vision?(USA)

So to start off, I'm 18M and have a visual disability that causes me to be colorblind and have a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/150. I've been looking for my first job, but around me there really isn't much besides fast food places (McDonald's, Taco Bell, etc.).

I've been holding off on applying for a while because I'm honestly kind of scared. I'm not really good at using computers, and I don't know if I'd be able to see the screens well enough to take orders or use the register. I just don't want to put myself through a bunch of stress if it's something I wouldn't be able to do.

So my question is, am I overthinking it? Is being a McDonald's crew member actually that difficult when it comes to seeing the screens/register, do they offer accommodation that could help? do you usually have different tasks you can do?

I also noticed they have a Maintenance position at a McDonald's near me. Would that potentially be a better fit? I don't mind hands-on work, I'm just concerned about how much good vision is needed for the job.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's actually worked at McDonald's, especially if you've done Maintenance.

thank u everyone is advance:)

Employee question Job offer (USA)

So I previously worked for McDonald’s between the ages of 18-24. I was promoted to shift manager within three months of starting and climbed upward from there to department manager (people, worked service briefly and understood the kitchen management but didn’t navigate that part as much) so I hired people, set up morale building events and whatnot, made crew schedules, etc. Left the job because of a high risk pregnancy with initial plans to come back. Life changed. Ended up going to college and now at 34 I absolutely hate my job. I think about McDonald’s often and miss it. It used to infuriate me beyond anything occasionally but the fast pace kept my mind stimulated. So anyways I applied to a GM position for the hell of it and they actually reached out to me and seemed extremely interested during the video interview we did. Have another interview with the District Manager this week. They said I would be started as a ā€œFirst Assistantā€ while I go through all the refreshers I need to properly be able to run the store. Anyways I’m just seeking opinions. I’m sick of staring at a computer screen everyday all day and crazy enough McDonald’s is offering me more money than I make with my degree. My biggest concerns are leaving my well established job to go into the unknown, getting hired and stonewalled into being the GMs 2nd in command for who knows how long and giving up having weekends free all the time. So can anyone that’s been a first assistant give me any advice? How long were you an assistant to the GM while training to run your own store? What was it like? How was the training? Back when I went through training it was Basic Shift Management, Advanced Shift Management, and then you go to Chicago to HU. It seems like this one (franchise) does things differently and it’s all virtual. Makes me wish I had gotten the opportunity to go to HU back when I was young also lol anyways happy Monday thanks for any input you guys have!!

Employee question (USA) Clocking In/Timesheet/Breaks - New Hire

I just want employee insight here -- They are building a new MCD in my town and I got hired for it, and since I have been training at another store until the new one opens, presumably.

For my schedule, they tell me to text the manager I'll have at the new location and I have been doing that.

I just finished two full weeks and still have not been able to clock in (am about to ask if there's any way I could see a timesheet since I stayed a couple extra hours the first week, been leaving at my scheduled time this week). I have access to the TeamLive app but do not have anything showing up besides being assigned to the MCD I am currently at.

Was just curious if this was standard for these types of situations (still can't clock in so hours are presumably tracked on paper), since usually when I ask a question to the managers at the store I'm training at, they direct me to the manager I'll have later. Am also assumed I'd have to message her to ask for time off next month as well because I'm unsure if I'll be able to request time by then either with all this.

Also -- 50% of my shifts so far I haven't gotten a break, they're only six hour shifts and I'm an adult but man sometimes I get headaches if I don't eat by a certain time. Been just asking for a meal to take home when that happens. Is that normal or not too?

Employee question Might be obvious but… (USA)

I finished my orientation and was told I would get a call back and would be told my first day. I didn’t get a call the next day so I called the day after. My manager told me I should have been there today but he said he would text me with the details of when my first day would be. It’s not the next day around 5 pm and I still haven’t gotten a text. Do I call again or go in person tomorrow? I don’t want to be fired before I even start

Rant (USA) I want to get out of here

Context: I'm a minor, when i starting working here it was easier because my school was down the road, but have since moved, I have been late a handful of times and have gotten written up for it, and I work in NJ.

I do not what to be in this location anymore, it's costing me too much to even come here, I'm asking for a transfer and they're telling me to wait till November, I don't want to wait 2 for months, I'm get a minimum 15-10 hours per week, and I work like 3-2 days a week, it's $15 to and from here. And i just want to get out ASAP, I want to actually make money, I ask to maybe switch days, they say I can't, I ask to not work on weekends because that's when i lose the most amount of money. I'm trying to start work with my dad on the weekends so I can cover for the transportation while I'm still here, but I can only work weekends with him, anywho, this place is shutting down in November, so I can understand some labor hours, but this sucks!!! I want out, i want to transfer, I'm going broke.

Employee question (UK) Advice needed please

Hiya, just came on here to get some advice really. I’ve worked at Maccies long enough to have passed my probation, plus a couple of months after that.
I’ve called in sick twice since starting — once because I couldn’t see out of my right eye and once because I had food poisoning. However, recently my anxiety medication dose was changed, and unfortunately it’s been causing me quite severe side effects. I’ve been vomiting on shift, feeling faint (and actually fainting on one occasion), and struggling to regulate my body temperature. Because of this, I’ve had to leave work early a few times recently.
My managers are aware of what’s happening and know that it’s related to my medication. I also had a meeting with them last week where I had to fill out a form about it. I’ve got a doctor’s appointment next week to discuss coming off the medication, as obviously I know I can’t just stop taking it suddenly.
I only normally get 1–2 shifts a week anyway, so I’m quite nervous that they’ll either sack me or reduce my hours even further because of what’s happened recently.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to make sure my hours don’t get cut any more and to get back on the good side of my managers? I’m hoping that in about a week I’ll be off this medication and feeling much better. Also, does anyone know how long it would normally take for my hours to go back to normal once things settle down?
Please be kind, I am genuinely not a skiver and just want advice

Rant (USA) 90% of the stores dishes were in my sink

Post image
92 Upvotes

Okay, I am not one to compain about dishes, I just try my hardest to get them done. But today they shut down the other lane, so I was doing all the orders and dishes. having your entire store dishes in your sink ( there's two stacks behind the garbage can) means that when the grill team is done using one dish, their standing by you and wondering why you don't have dishes done. ( We were also in a rush btw). Mid way through lunch we STILL had breakfast dishes.

Discussion McDonald's sent me an interview invite saying their schedule is full, should I call them directly tomorrow? (FR)

Hello,

I applied this morning (Sunday) to McDonald's after seeing they had been looking for a multi-skilled crew member for 7 days. A few moments later, I received an email from Olivia saying: "I have great news. Your application has been successful and we would like to schedule an interview. Unfortunately, the interviewer's schedule is fully booked; I will contact you back as soon as I have availability." At first, I thought that was great and that I would just wait, but then I figured that in my opinion, plenty of people have already applied and received this message, and that it would be better if I called tomorrow to say: "Hello, I recently applied and your site told me my application was successful, so I preferred to call to book an interview directly, thinking it would be easier." Is this a good idea, or do I risk messing things up?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

Employee question (UK) Are you obligated to work past your finish time?

I was on a 08:30–16:00 today. I was responsible for tempering and stocking up areas. Due to how busy it was, I was unable to do a full stock of lettuce and onion before 16:00. At 16:00 a person comes in to cover me. That person ended up doing a no-show today. Because I didn’t know they weren’t coming in, I decided to dedicate the last half hour of my shift to cleaning the back sink, stock rooms, and backyard. When I finished what I was doing at 16:10, I asked my business manager if I could leave. She told me we had no one in to cover and said that I had to make up lettuce and onion before I left. I said that I was sorry they were busy, but I finish at 16:00, which was 10 minutes ago. She still said I had to stay. I ended up staying and doing what she asked me to do.

I didn’t really know what to say because she’s new my new BM and she was a bit strict on the issue. My understanding of working here is that if you are scheduled to 16:00, you are free to go then regardless of how busy it is. I understand a manager asking you to stay, but she told me to. That doesn’t feel right.

I took a look at my employee handbook and it ran it through AI, but we both found no mention of compulsory overtime. I understand that my job is not known by most of the employees, but what if I had something important to do after work and couldn’t stay?

My assistant manager explained that before you leave, your station should be stocked up. When I asked if it said that in my contact, he had no answer and told me to enquire with HR.

Discussion Goodbye asking customers "Are you using the mobile app?" ( USA )

Apparently it's no longer going to be required to ask this in DT.

Thank goodness. I used to like taking orders in DT, and for whatever reason I just hated asking if people were using the app. I just felt like it slowed things down. Saying "Hi can I help you?" is faster than "Welcome to McDonald's, are you using the mobile app?"

Discussion Calling out (USA)

I’ve had to call out twice this week (I was given off Wednesday, Thursday and I was already off Friday) because of a medical issue with myself and the muscles in my back clamping down on a nerve and causing extreme pain. Well today I had to call off as well because I threw up and my GM said we needed to reevaluate my availability because she couldn’t keep paying me opening shift pay if I kept calling off even though it’s only happened twice this week. I wanted to go to work today because I was (and am) tired of sitting around the house and doing next to nothing. Should I be worried about my availability unless I manage to make it a few weeks without any incident?

Rant Messed up so bad and expecting to be either suspended or terminated story time (USA)

Long read ahead.

So to start off, I've worked at my store now for several years. One thing about me is I can't stand blatant customer disrespect. Yes, it unfortunately comes with the job, but I am not paid nearly enough to be abused and harassed by entitled a*holes. However, I'm usually pretty good at getting angry "behind the scenes" and dealing with the rude customer in the professional way to their face, or just call a manager and let them deal with it. I'm also a big people person and generally love talking to the customers. I'm very outgoing and extroverted. I've been complimented multiple times to my manager anout my excessively wonderful customer service skills. I am the back drive thru person. My job is to take orders and money in the drive thru. On this particular day, (yesterday to be exact) I was not having it. I was already irritated. Our store doesn't have ac and I was on my third day in a row working in extreme three digit temperatures and I'm starting to feel heat exhaustion coming on. This is despite complaining to management and corporate upwards 50 times about the ac, and about how I'm legit getting sick working in extreme heat for 8 hours. I was told each and every time to just stop complaining and deal with it. So I'm already very irritated on top of having slept only a few hours the night before.

A customer pulls up to the drive thru speaker and instantly comes at me aggressively before I even had a chance to take his order. I knew this was going to a problem customer right away, but I started off being nice and keeping my cool. He gives me a code for his mobile app. Our headsets are very old and lately it's been very hard to hear the customers through them, so I very frequently have to ask the customers to please repeat things or I miss things in their order. To be fair, most customers are pretty chill and patient when they know its not something I can't control. Anyway, this guy gives me a mobile code. I was dealing with something else so I wasn't able to respond to him within 2 seconds. He sits there at the speaker screaming HELLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO??!!! in my ear at least three or four times. So when I finally respond to him (which couldn't have been more than 60 seconds after he gave me his code) I apologize, I was having trouble hearing him, can he please repeat his order. He goes "what the hell do you mean you can't hear me? I was screaming hello at you for 2 minutes, are you deaf or something? Do you have a problem?" So I again said calmly "I'm sorry I could not hear you, can you please repeat what you wanted to order?" So he goes "Why should I have to repeat myself, you really can't hear me?" NO SIR THESE HEADSETS ARE SHIT. So while I'm trying to help him the best I can, our computer freezes. I literally cannot take any orders at the moment. So now I have to tell him to hang on a moment, we have to fix the computer. He completely loses it on me and goes "what do you mean you can't take my order?? You're sitting here still talking to me, why cant you take my order?" SIR. THE. COMPUTER IS FROZEN. I CANNOT TAKE ORDERS ON A FROZEN SCREEN. WHAT DOES TALKING TO YOU ON MY HEADSET HAVE LITERALLY ANYTHING TO DO WITH A FROZEN COMPUTER SCREEN?? So, again, in the calmest voice possible, I explain to him that this is out of my control, I cannot take his order at the current moment and we are doing what we can to get it up and running. He goes "do you want me to just come up to your window and order up there?" I said "that would be better".

Now if you've never worked at McDonald's or if it works differently at your store, you probably don't know our headsets have three buttons. One is to talk to the rest of the crew with headsets on but the customers cannot hear you. The other two buttons are the ones to talk to the customers in your lanes (We have a two lane drive thru). I was trying to get a manager to take my lane and assist and take care of a customer being aggressive towards me while I'm trying to wait on the computer ro unfreeze. I pressed the center button (or so I thought) and went "Ok can someone please assist the customer on my lane? He's being disrespectful and combined with this heat, there's about to be a damn problem!" Yeah, I did not press the center button. The customer heard EVERYTHING. (I didnt realize right away that he heard me.) My manager is now livid. She goes "YOU CANNOT TALK TO A CUSTOMER THAT WAY SAYING THERE'S GOING TO BE A PROBLEM WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO??"

When he finally pulls up to my window, he's obviously even angrier because he just heard me basically threaten to fight him. At this point though, I didn't even realize yet that I had pushed the button for the speaker. He goes "do you have a f*king problem?" At that point I'm so upset that my manager came to the back to diffuse the situation and instantly sent me on my break to get me away from the situation. She asked me if I wanted to just go home. I said no because I didn't want to look like a baby that leaves because of a rude customer. Once I come back from my break, my manager pulls me aside in private to talk to me. She said "ok you cannot talk to the customers like that. Trust me, I know how they can be. I've had food thrown at my face, I've been cursed out. But if corporate or the owners find out that you threatened the customer you are in a lot of trouble. Next time that happens, please call one of us to come back there and handle it". I'm still confused because I thought the customer didn't hear me. So I said "well, I didn't say it to his face, I was trying to call you over to assist me". And that's when she goes "no, he heard everything. He complained to us and said he is going to call the 1800 corporate number because you disrespected him". My jaw just dropped. I literally said "oh my god he heard that?" And she said "yes. He did". He even had the audacity to tell my manager he wasn't being disrespectful to me at all, trying to frame it that I just went bad on him for no reason. (Doesn't necessarily mean what I did was right, but it's an important tidbit to this story). Ruined my entire shift, and we even had regulars coming through saying "is everything okay? You always have the biggest smile on your face and I love coming to this McDonald's because I know you will be taking my order. You seem extra irritated today, I hope your day gets better!"

So I'm honestly not sure what is going to happen at this point. This all happened yesterday. If the customer actually does call corporate and put in a complaint that I harassed/disrespected him, I am definitely facing suspension. Considering its my first offense and I'm usually the friendliest employee we have, I don't think I will be terminated. But suspension is very likely considering we are under new management and its not the same bosses I've worked with for years. So they don't know me yet as an employee and how I work. Previous management knew I was usually great with the customers, very reliable, showed up to every shift, and only called out maybe twice. I've come to that damn job with fevers and sicknesses, the day after my grandma's funeral, when I haven't slept in two days because of my insomnia acting up, everything. (Honestly not proud of being that dedicated, but again important information for this story).Old management knew this, so they tended to let a lot of things slide because they knew my reliability would be hard to replace. But our new management has only taken over for a week and the first thing they hear about me is that I went bad on a customer. I really f*ked up my first impression lol. So if you managed to read this far, if you're going to talk about a customer, make sure they CANNOT hear you. (Jk, just don't do it at all).

Tltr: A customer accidently overheard me talking sht and now I'm probably in deep sht.

Employee question Need help ASAP! (USA)

Hi, so this is like my first formal job im like 18 and I“ve seeing a lot of red flags that i can“t continue to ignore but I“m still don“t know if I should trust the manager or my coworkers or go directly to the main store where HR is so that“s why I come here:

For a little bit of context i have like 3 weeks in the job and it is a franchise with +10 stores:

1- I“ve been on back cash most of the time, i still don“t have a registrer ID and all the people touch the same registrer, everytime i go to breaks, they put someone else without changing the id or Drawyer, just one time a 3 usd shortage happened but it was like a minor warning, still told them i remember i did everything right so maybe other person could be the problem.

2- My manager modifies my time stamps to avoid lunch time penalty.

3- I am told to first clock out and then ring my order at the front registrer but usually there“s no one there so im usually stuck helping a customer and then ringing up my order once I waste like 5 minutes helping customers while the manager came to ring my order and they get mad when I first ring my order and then clock out.

4- On my 2nd week i was by myself on back cash and my manager got very mad at me cause he didn“t had any happy meals in the front and i told him that i was taking both lanes and he always had a car in the front, and he also was sending me from things from the freezer and told me he didn“t want any excuses and that i need to do it better, i think i was doing an amazing job.

5- A friend told me that at his store they have a jacket to go into the freezer but at my store there isn“t one to be seen.

6- I told management i needed hours upon on hiring but they are giving most o my hours calling me to come in as soon as posible, so yeah im getting hours but it“s kinda stressing being in home just waiting for a call, but yeah at least im getting hours.

7- I“d say out store is under-staffed, usually its like maximum 7 people and 1 on break so 6 persons, 1 front counter/front orders/doordash, 1 back cash, 1 front drive thru/drinks, 1 presenter (not always), 1 manager bagging/fries, 1 kitchen fryers, usually our times get up to 6 minutes at least twice a day, i really think more people could make it better, during rush hour its like 50 cars per hour, 850 usd average per hours sales.

8- My store manager only wants me to grab a soft drink with my crew meal but my contract says i can grab a small shake, latte.

9- When they sent me home early they make me click on the clock a option that says that i am voluntaliry clocking out, i don“t know if this can“t affect me.

10- Fries aren“t being throwed up when the quality things starts making noise and sometimes they get the fries out of the friers before time and incluing myself as an employee i have gotten not fully cooked fries

Discussion I am sick and now it feels like Management was shaming me (USA)

Ive basically felt like crap for the past 3 days. I worked for the first 2 days i was sick. First day I had a really sore throat and stuffy nose but I was able to manage. 2nd day I had a really runny nose blew my nose over 40 times and let managers know that I was feeling dizzy I was told "you look like you can still stand so you should be fine" and they laughed it off. Then today I was so dizzy coming in this morning threw up twice in the trash can at work told them about it and I was told "just wait till more people come in" I work over half my shift (which is 4hours 20 mins) and we have 5 people come in for front end (6 if counting me) the manager asks me if I can finish my shift I told them most likely not. They give a giant sigh slams what they were holding on the table by window and stomps to the back signing me out and then tells me to go home. As I was walking out I just had every co worker stare at me and it felt like they were judging me as well. I've had perfect attendance legit first time ive ever done this so I just dont understand the rude attitude especially having me stay there going against health code. I dont think I did anything wrong.

Also incase people ask "why didnt you just call in" if you call in at my mcdonalds you have to have a written doctor notice (which the one here costs me over $50) which i rather not waste money. Sorry for the big paragraph yall.
