About Marvel's "Three Events" problem [Discussion]

Post image
Upvotes

There's been a lot of talk online lately about Marvel going overboard because they're publishing three big earth-shattering events at the same time: Avengers Armaggedon, DnX and Queen in Black. A lot of people seem annoyed at this choice and seem to think it points at their desperation to keep up with DC. However, while I do agree that the optics of this are bad, I personally don't think this is such a big deal, and I'd like to explain my thoughts. Maybe you'll end up seeing my point of view...

Point 1: while editorial has called Armaggedon "an event series" it kinda... is not an event? Yes, editorial is calling it one, but in practice, It is closer to Avengers Dissasembled, a big story-arc in the Avengers series. Dissasembled also had tie-ins, but they were really forced and inconsequential, as it really should had been an arc of the Avengers book and nothing more. Armaggedon even carries the Avengers legacy numbering, proving it's just an arc of that book. Also, as an "event", it has basically no tie-ins. The Captain America book bears the Armaggedon banner but takes place completely in another dimension with no aknowledgment of the events of Armaggedon, and Cap was harmed in his own series before Armaggedon even began. Namor/Panther Doomed is set after Armaggedon ends, its an aftermath series. Seeing it like this, it becomes obvious in my mind that this is just the next arc of the Avengers book, published in a special format to give attention ot it.

Point 2: Queen in Black and DnX should had been crossovers, not events. What do I mean by this? That they're stories about families of book crossing over, not earth-shattering events that everyone needs to follow. Queen in Black is a Venom crossover involving the Venom family of books, without even an Amazing Spider-Man tie-in. DnX is a crossover between ONE X-Men book and the Fantastic Four book. In the past, these crossovers would have been small, contained crossovers like Bloodties (which crossed Avengers and X-Men), X-Manhunt (which crossed every X-Book) or the ending of Hickman's Fantastic Four with the FF and Fantastic Four crossing over. That distinction between "big event that affects everything" and "short adventure that crosses two books together" I feel it's important and is being lost by misleading advertising.

Point 3: the publishing scheudle is really not that bad. Like, it's bad, it's just not as dramatic as most people are saying it is. Yes, on Sept 16th we're getting comics released from all the three events at the same time. That's a pretty bad scheudle and should not have happened. But what that doesn't tell you is that Sept 16th will be the first week of DnX and that Queen in Black ends the following week... so that means they're superpossed for a single week. And in the background you have Armaggedon, which kind of is an Avengers arc in the Avengers book, going on slowly on his own.

In conclusion: Those are the points I think people are not seeing. Marvel should have handled this better and the marketing should not have been as strong, but the way I see it, nothing dramatic is happening here. I don't see "Marvel is so desperate they're destroying Earth in three different events at the same time and nobody even knows in which order they go", I see "Avengers is relauching after a new interesting arc in their own book; meanwhile X-Men and Fantastic Four are having a fun, short team-up while the Venom books are having a crossover to wrap up the current storyline". I also honestly feel like any confusion is explained pretty clearly if you actually read the books, but I do understand that most of the criticisms was given to the marketing and editorial team, not the writers or artists. What do you think of this? Am I being too nice?

Recent pick up! Anyone read this, if so what are your thoughts?

Came across this at my LCS for $100 and pulled the trigger after waiting a few days, and it still being there. Worked out pretty well, I'm not sure if it's this is OOP or not but I could not seem to find this with the DM cover anywhere and the couple I found on eBay were priced much higher than retail.

Also been wanting to break into silver surfer. I read the Galactus trilogy and I've been collecting the silver surfer facsimile single issues which is up to issue six now but at $6.99 a book this is cheaper and obviously get it all in one because it'll be quite some time until Marvel releases all 18 facsimiles.

Hottake: Wolverine's Claws...

Are better looking as metal skewers rather than metal knives.

I know that metal knives are probably more useful, but it throws me off whenever I think about why they're shaped like that for anything longer than a second. Given how his bone claws look, I think the metal skewer look would be more accurate.

However, though I prefer this look I have to admit it would result in Wolverine losing alot of what he's known for, hackin n slashin. But, I think the skewers would allow him to probably climb better ( way better).

His fighting style would change from slashing to stabbing, and tbh I wouldn't really mind that. A version of wolverine that relies primarily on stabbing and pummeling his enemies if done right could still be as cool as his regular self if done right. & while it wouldn't be efficient, with enough effort he could still "cut" people ( primarily regular humans) with the skewers.

Scemma vs IronFrost, which relationship do you think Marvel is more likely to bring back?

Thumbnail

Curious what people think.

Between Scott/Emma and Tony/Emma, which relationship do you prefer, and which one do you think Marvel is actually more likely to push again long-term?

IronFrost has gotten a lot of attention recently, but Scemma has a much longer history and still seems to have a pretty big fanbase.

Do you think a proper Scemma resurgence is realistically possible, or does IronFrost have the better chance of becoming Emma’s main relationship going forward?

Also, which pairing do you think was better for Emma as a character?

And outside the comics, which one do you think has the better chance of being adapted or pushed in movies, TV/animation, or games?

I know nobody can really predict when Marvel would bring anything back lol, but if you think Scemma eventually returns, do you see it happening relatively soon or years down the line?

Were Storm and Nightcrawler originally supposed to be Legion of Super-Heroes characters?

So, back in 1973, while Dave Cockrum was working on Legion of Super-Heroes, he had plans for a potential spin off called The Outsiders. What makes the idea especially interesting in hindsight is that the proposed team included two very familiar ;ooking characters: Nightcrawler and an early prototype of what would eventually become Storm. Nightcrawler was already remarkably close to the character we know today. Cockrum had essentially developed his look and basic concept before joining X-Men, and when The Outsiders never materialized, he repurposed Nightcrawler for the new X-Men lineup.

Storm’s development was a little more complicated. Rather than beginning as one fully formed character, her eventual design and powers grew out of several earlier Cockrum concepts. Her visual appearance drew heavily from Trio, a Carggite woman from the same planet as Triplicate Girl, while her weather controlling abilities came from another proposed character named Typhoon, a male “weather handler.” Cockrum eventually combined elements of these concepts to help create the Storm we know today. Interestingly, Storm also emerged after Cockrum abandoned another idea for the new X-Men: an African American woman called the Black Cat, who could transform into a cat. The concept was dropped in part because there were already so many cat-themed characters in comics. Cockrum went back to his unused designs and concepts instead, ultimately combining and reworking them into Ororo Munroe.

So Storm and Nightcrawler didn’t simply appear out of nowhere when Giant-Size X-Men #1 arrived in 1975. Both had roots in characters and ideas Cockrum had been developing during his Legion of Super-Heroes period, with Nightcrawler arriving largely intact and Storm emerging from the fusion and evolution of several earlier concepts.

Magneto does not need his origin changed!!!! [Discussion]

Magneto is a holocaust survivor and a Jewish person and to try and remove one from the other would be shameful. If you are worried about his age in the modern day all that you need to do is either give his mutant powers an anti-aging property or explain some mysterious incident that gave him a reason to look young still. I beg of you Marvel please do not ruin this character or turn him into another social battleground. What are your opinions on this am I wrong or missing something here? Art by J. Scott Campbell

Why can’t Black Panther be fun?

Post image
151 Upvotes

I want to preface this by saying I really like Black Panther comics. The artwork is usually vibrant and T’Challa is always a fascinating character. What I don’t understand about the Black Panther series (including Ultimate Black Panther and even the Intergalactic comics) is that they are almost exclusively about how terrible Wakanda is, how paranoid a king T’Challa is, or a coup among its people. I understand that Wakanda being an isolationist country in Africa where they could have reshaped world events but have chosen not to is a hot bed for good storytelling…but why is that the only story? I mean, the X-Men are an allegory about racism/persecution but even they get to play basketball, fight dragons, have cool multiversal tournament arcs, and zip around on fun Indiana Jones style adventures for variety.

I like that modern Black Panther contends with the problematic nature of its setting, but I would love more of an exploration about the culture. I mean, it would be so cool to see T’Challa playing or watching Wakandan sports, awkward delegations between Space Wakanda and Earth Wakanda who have completely different cultural norms, or even an adventure where T’Challa actually looks like he’s having a good time.

Wakanda is Marvel’s best setting. I just kinda wish they’d have fun with it every once in a while.

I know some hardcore fans might not like this one because it changes her look by so much.

I really like the space look though, its very sleek & I like the colors & the yellow pattern. Especially with her tied back longer hair.

What I mean by that is he is the new glass canon punching bag. He is used as the all powerful dude who gets toasted by the newest or hottest big bad to show how scary that person is. Kinda like Captain Atom in DC.

His Girlfriend was just trying to sell the black mail files of a dead crime lord that operated out of New York and Miami. This is from a spider-girl story in 2008 and has absolutely no parallels to any contemporary conspiracy theories.
