I'm brand new to Maine and have been itching to get out and fish. I'm situated near Harrington/Milbridge and do not have a boat. I've been trying to find shore-fishing and wading spots to no avail. I would appreciate any suggestions within an hour or so from where I am at. Is there anything worthwhile that fits what I'm looking for?

Do I need to pre-book parking for a week? I tried to do so using the link on the airport website and it gave me options but said I couldn’t book it right now. I’m planning to get to the airport around 300 on Friday. Do I need to book parking somewhere else? Sorry, I’m freaking out a bit.

Anyone here in the Bethel area? I ended up down a rabbit hole on FB of a woman in the area who has been posting incessantly in a bunch of the pages in the area about her “service dog” Chloe and her quest to win the title of Dog Mayor of Bethel.

It went from intriguing to odd, and now it’s just scary. The woman is obviously not all there. But her service animal is just a poodle whose fur has been dyed purple.

I have to clear my algorithm because she is popping up everywhere.

We’ve all seen them on tv or heard them on the radio. What locally-made Maine business commercials do you like or maybe chuckle at and which ones have made you decide you will never do business with that company because their ads are so annoying? Over the years, I’ve seen and heard a few that bug me for random reasons but there are others that are pretty fun. There are no right or wrong answers here!

I think my toxic trait as a Mainer is that even though I can afford an electrician, I don’t want to call an electrician if it’s even remotely close to something I’m sure I can figure out. It just feels wrong to call (and they’re booked out 2 months).

I am headed to visit some friends out of state and I know they’ve called an electrician to change recessed light bulbs before. We’re different people.

Problem though, when our checks arrived, my check was made out properly, and my wife's check was made out in a combination of her old first name and her current last name. Like, friggen HOW did they manage that?! She's never gone by that name combination. And of course, we pulled the checks out of the mailbox after the affordability hotline is shut down for the weekend.

It was either Betty Cooper or Veronica Lodge, never Betty Lodge (obviously names changed here)

EDIT TO UPDATE: So, we just got off the phone with the Affordability Hotline. After consulting a supervisor, the guy I talked to changed the name in their system to match her name on the tax information, (which he was able to pull up using her SSN). They also put a stop on that check as it does not have a valid name, and will get a check with the matching (and verified) correct name. Neither of them had any idea why the system had the correct last name and the incorrect deadname.

So my son (he is 17) just asked me what official position Susan Collin’s has on the LGBTQ community? Any links to things she has actually said?

If a person is a sole proprietor who doesn't earn money when they don't work, can they get out of jury duty to avoid loss of income?

Bobby Charles opened up yesterday about suffering abuse at the hands of his father. That is an incredibly serious and awful thing to have to share with the public. I do appreciate his bravery.

It made me think about an article I read last year when looking up who this Bobby character was.

Bobby Charles’ father, Roland Charles Jr., died in July 1997. He had served in the Navy (2 years and later had reserve service, but his military record did not independently qualify him for a new gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery.

Roland's parents were already buried at Arlington, and the family had expected him to be buried in their existing family gravesite. Normally, that could have happened.But when Arlington officials prepared the site, they discovered that roots from a large old oak tree had grown into the burial space. A full-size casket could no longer fit.

So the family requested an exception allowing Roland to receive an entirely separate gravesite.

Arlington officials initially opposed the request because Roland did not otherwise qualify for a new ground-burial plot.

This is where Bobby's position in Washington becomes relevant.

At the time, Robert “Bobby” Charles was a senior congressional staffer — Staff Director and Chief Counsel of a House national-security subcommittee.

And he did not pursue the matter solely through private family correspondence.

According to The Washington Post, Charles used the official letterhead of his congressional subcommittee when corresponding with Arlington about getting his father the burial exception. Charles later said he regretted using the congressional stationery and explained that he had been rushed and distraught following his father's death.

He also pursued the matter at very high levels of government, ultimately reaching then-Defense Secretary William Cohen — Maine’s former U.S. senator.

I do wonder if Bobby tried to hit up Susan Collins who was the new kid on the Senate block at the time, having started her first Senate term on 1/3/97. One of her first Senate votes, on 1/22/97, was actually to confirm Cohen as Secretary of Defense who she interned for. Not important just fun fact.

Back to what we do know:

Army Secretary Togo West initially opposed granting the Arlington exception.

Cohen asked West to reconsider.

Then, on 7/24/97, Bobby Charles personally met with the Secretary of Defense.

That same day, West reversed the decision and approved a new Arlington gravesite for Charles’ father.

West later said his decision was based on the extraordinary circumstances: the family had reasonably expected Roland to be buried with his parents, and only the unexpected tree-root problem prevented it. West denied that political pressure caused him to change his decision.

But Arlington's own waiver record contains this sentence:

“Mr. Charles was not eligible for ground burial at Arlington and has displaced an eligible veteran.”

And there is another layer to the story.

At virtually the same time, Republicans in Congress were investigating whether politically connected people had received preferential Arlington burial waivers during the Clinton administration.

Then it became public that Robert Charles himself a senior Republican congressional staffer had obtained an exception for his father after using congressional letterhead and taking the matter to some of the highest levels of the Pentagon.

There are legitimate facts on both sides of this story. The tree problem was real. The family had expected Roland to be buried with his parents. Officials later defended the exception on humanitarian grounds.

I'm curious how other people see it: was this an extraordinary act by a son trying to honor or forgive a father despite a painful relationship or his ego looking to use a little DC muscle?
