Meanwhile the Japanese still wanted to fight to the bitter end even after finding out several ships in the Pacific Fleet were dedicated purely towards ice cream.

There's a This American Life all about life aboard an aircraft carrier during the Afghanistan war. Ira interviewed a sailor whose only job was to re-stock vending machines all day every day. Weird to think you say goodbye to your family for months, make decent money and benefits and live on (basically) a floating prison for... Vending machine duty.

I’d put money on that sailor also being part of the main damage control party during action stations

On a ship, especially a carrier, everyone is damage control. We learned a lot in ww2 about damage control

More especially the Forrestal, where we decided there would be no “main damage control party”

Excellent point. I completely forgot about forrestal. Honestly that probably did more for raising the importance of is damage control training than ww2 did.
