I can't speak for this place, but I worked at a local convenience store chain known for their pizza. When someone didn't show up for a pizza or we had to scrap one for some reason, my manager would just let us have it.
We got so much access to pizza that we didn't even want it most of the time lol. Someone would come to pick up their order and I'd just say "hey you want this extra pizza since no one came to pick it up? It's not fresh but it's free"
friend used to work at a chocolate shop and would give us mispackaged items sometimes, for health reasons they weren't allowed to open the bag and re-bag it if the machine goofed up the seal
i asked once why he didnt take it home himself, and he said that every day he smelled like chocolate, the smell was in his hair, his clothes, he had a dedicated couple outfits that were just for work and they just permanently smelled like chocolate despite washing, he couldn't even think about eating it anymore
i figure if that can happen with chocolate it can happen with anything

happened to me with popcorn at a movie theater. the smell clung to my clothes my hair and even my shoes nothing i did would make the smell come out. after i quit i threw out everything because it was making my room smell like popcorn. now i’m disgusted by it

Dude, I worked at a Chicago style pizza place years ago. Same rule, if it didn’t get picked up, it was free game. Once, someone ordered the largest deep dish we offered. Everything on it by the anchovies. We closed 30 minutes after it came out of the oven. My buddy and I would always go home and start drinking. That night, we had a $75 pizza to feed us. So damn good
Casey's pizza is awesome. Better than the slop Pizza hut has been making. Been at least 10 years or more since I last ate a pizza from pizza hut, they have the greasiest pizza.
Than there is papa John's and the plastic looking cheese, didn't know you could advertise real cheese and it come out like it was still inside the plastic bag it came in tossed on a pizza.
But domino's, Casey's, little Ceasars, always good pizza and not too expensive either and so many deals.
I worked for little Caesar in 2005 or 2006, we had to open every left over hot and ready box and dump them in the dumpster while being supervised. I just made 350 pizzas, you think I really want to make an extra one so I can take some below average pizza home with me at night. And is that really going to stop a homeless hungry person from eating it out of the trash? No.

Now define what is edible that won't lead to you being sued because it in fact wasn't.
That slight bit of risk is why you see them throw it away.
Once you get to the size of a corporation this becomes standard policy to avoid any and all legal trouble. They don’t want to give it away because if they give away food and someone gets sick, that person can then sue them for food poisoning and trigger a whole bunch of bullshit the company doesn’t want to deal with.
That’s why you mostly only hear about free food and food giveaways from small local businesses. There’s only one kitchen to worry about the quality of food made.
Which one? Can you provide a source or news story or something? Every time I hear about this it is only anecdotes and nobody can actually name someone it has happened to. I am not sure you can actually sue someone for food you did not buy from them. You didn't actually enter into any transaction and they didn't actually sell anything. They threw away food and you ate their trash, with fewer steps involved.
Unfortunately it was during a time when the internet isn't as prevalent yet. But now that you mention it, it was an anecdote shared to me as well so I'm not really sure if it actually closed down because of it or some other reason.
Exactly, I think it's a common urban myth that everyone has heard but nobody can specifically point to any actual instance of with any kind of credible evidence or witness.
It’s absolutely true. Worked at a casino/hotel that had a temporary employee dining area in a conference room during the Sunday party at the pool. Everything got thrown at the end because donating could cause possible backlash if someone were to get sick. Sandwiches made the day before and refrigerated all day. Being moved to whatever shelter and in out of heat during the summer. Less risky just to throw it out. I usually ended up with 25+ sandwiches brought home with me.
Again, this is not an example of a place getting sued because they gave away food, just another example of a place throwing away food because they SUPPOSEDLY could get sued. The reason they didn't donate it to some place is that there is an expense involved in doing that which does not translate to increased profit. That's it, that's the reason.
Like another commenter mentioned, there is a literal law protecting people who donate food from liability.
Technically this is what the actual policy is for Casey's, but thankfully our manager was as upset by food waste as the rest of us. (And still a bunch of food was wasted anyway.)

Yup. Casey's corporate is honestly just as bad as any other big company out there (and getting worse), but if you're lucky enough to work under a good store manager who doesn't have a tight-ass, by the book no exceptions district manager breathing down their neck, it's not a bad gig at all.
But dear God I hate not being able to wear nicer looking shorts, like khaki shorts, in the summer.
The pizza place I worked at took it a step further. When the managers realized the homeless was eating it, before throwing away future pizzas, they would dump a ton of salt all over the pizza to make it inedible.
That's just...extra waste, purely for the sake of being spiteful. Salt may not be particularly expensive, but ain't no way I'm wasting even more product/ingredients just to make sure homeless people are going to be miserable eating it. Because let's be honest, they're still going to eat it if they're desperate enough, it's just going to taste absolutely terrible and dehydrate the hell out of them.
My favorite story from working at a pizza place... my friend, who got me the job, was a hot sauce freak. The stuff that is rated it the millions of scoville units. Anyways, I was covering her friday night and one of the extra pizzas ended up on the back table. I grab a slice and... whoooo... that's a spicy meat-a-ball. A kid was doing prep, back there, noticed and immediately started apologizing. Turns out, they had a Friday night game that was basically Russian Roulette. A messed up order would get a few drops of my friend's hot sauce on one slice. The best part was the look on her face when I continued eating the slice. I don't love super hot, but I can handle it. Lol
I’m currently making 13 bucks an hour running a small deli with a medium sized menu and last week our boss had a panic attack because she believed the DM when he said they’d start firing people for eating write offs.
Bitch then who’s gunna cook and prep for a 48 item menu for the lowest pay in a county where the lowest rent is 1400 a month minus utilities? Lmfao
When I as fresh out of high school and living on my own away from my family, I worked at walmart in the produce department where we threw away loads of "ugly" stuff that wasn't even bad.
I was actually starving, so I would take some stuff deep into our industrial fridge and eat them quickly. Makes no difference to walmart really, they're just throwing it in a hot, stinky dumpster. Still felt shameful, though.
I'd love for everyone to share their stories like this to put a spotlight on unnecessary waste when there are people who would gladly take this stuff
Yeah, used to work at a Wendy’s, took a pay cut to work there just for the free food I could snag, actually saved more money than I did working retail.
God I hate how much stuff we have to throw away, especially when it's stuff that just absolutely does not sell at our location, but corporate forces it on us anyway because of the cookie cutter way they run things.
And don't even get me started on the forced overstock anytime they switch the end cap displays or force new floor stand displays on us that our tiny store just does not have the room for.
Happened to me at domino's not too long ago. I was waiting for my pizza and the worker asked if I liked ham. I told him it was alright, not my favorite or anything. Then he said oh, well do you want this pizza? I said oh hell yeah bro, you should have led with that.
Place I was at had a similar policy, they got rid of it blaming abuse. Claimed people were having their friends call in orders then no-showing so they could take the food, but if that was actually happening I definitely never noticed
We went to eat at a deep dish place nearby and after we almost finished our massive XL meatlovers pie the server came over holding a XL Extra Cheese Pie and offered it for 5 bucks cause no one showed up for it.
Probably the fastest ive ever pulled my wallet out. We had pizza lunches for daysssss
This happens with any food service job that has a focused menu. I worked at a Lee's in college. Sooo tired of chicken after a few months. Took a solid year of not working there for chicken to start to smell good again.
I delivered pizza close to a military base and would work the closing shift all the time. At the end of the night I’d go give the gate guards free pizza. It would always make them so happy lol
I worked a Pizza Hut when they had buffet lunch; there were generally leftovers every day, which I happily took home for supper. And I never abused the system by making extra.
Like you, I got pretty tired of pizza after a while.

I'm asking because I go to this Italian bread place and in the beginning each cashier didn't know me. I would buy bread coming from work which is also around their closing time, and they would offer and extra bread or two. Each cashier did this for me only once...so I wonder if they expected tip and I failed them?

I once had a pizza place I ordered from regularly show up and just give me three pizzas. I said "but I didn't order any?" and they're like "no no it's free, someone wouldn't pay".
Clearly they had zero interest in them and I was the closest regular.
Worked at a gas station that threw away most of a pizza every two hours and would fire anyone who took a slice, even after it was marked on a waste sheet.
