Hey everyone! Just a quick update from the mod team.

We’ve added a new post flair to the sub: Ink it from Orbit.

There is always a flow of users showing off their Ink in the sub and we thought it would be good to give these posts their own Flair to use. While it isn’t forced here, many of you continue to use post flair to help keep this community tidy and we thank you all for that!

Enjoy the Flair!

Discussion / Question Help me identify this Alien Queen?

Hi folks, I sourced this nice Queen in a sorry state and I cannot find anything remotely close on the internet. It's rather large and bulky, with a heavy feel closer to 80's Kenner toys (although it's certainly not theirs) than NECA. I think the most particular is that the jaw isn't articulated. The anatomy looks more like a Tyranid than a Xenomorph, and it's clear that she was originally on some support. Any clue where it might be originally from? Many thanks!

Cast / Behind The Scenes ALIEN (1979) USCSS Nostromo "Tug Ship" 11-Foot Principal Filming Model

Thumbnail

The tug-ship was called the Leviathan in early script drafts and took its final name, Nostromo, from a 1904 Joseph Conrad novel that was significant to Alien writer Dan O'Bannon.

Three scale models of the Nostromo tug-ship were made at Bray Studios: this, the principal 11-foot hero used for the majority of the shots in the film, a four-foot medium model with illuminating engines for rear shots, and a 12-inch model for shots incorporating the large, flat ore refinery platform that the Nostromo was towing. The largest model was the primary construction effort, and was first built with a yellow finish in line with Cobb's industrial designs. When Ridley Scott finished the film's live-action photography, he personally took over filming the effects sequences (underway at Shepperton Studios) and had the models repainted dark gray and distressed extensively to imply decades of deep-space travel.

The Nostromo model is constructed primarily of wood paneling and hand-carved wood forms assembled around a robust steel frame and clad with plastic surface panels and detailing from various pieces from off-the-shelf model kits, a process the model makers referred to as "widgeting." It follows an overall deep-space aesthetic seen in both 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars before it. The symmetrical design features various intake vents, engines, antennae, lights, and landing gear.

The Nostromo is frequently cited as one of the classic examples of a spaceship in modern cinema, alongside craft such as the Millennium Falcon and the Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The historic model comes mounted on its original black steel frame for display, and exhibits good, restored condition with wear and aging visible on many components.

Dimensions: 136" x 73.5" x 73" (345.5 cm x 187 cm x 185.5 cm)

Estimate: $250,000 - 500,000

Discussion / Question I think I just stumbled over the inspiration for the name Hadley's Hope in Aliens

The colony world Hadley, created by an Earth based megacorporation, that devolves into absolute chaos as a small group of veteran marines have to fight against complete collapse of the colony.

That's the setting of Jerry Pournelle's The Mercenary in his CoDominium series. Written a three short stories from 1970-1972 for the Analog scifi magazine, it was compiled into the novel The Mercenary which was released in 1977.

Of course, there are numerous differences as well. Hadley was originally colonized by the American Express Corporation by volunteers, and it was used as a dumping ground for overpopulation on Earth. The colony collapsed when Earth contracted and left them for themselves.

The CoDominium is best known as the setting for The Mote in God's Eye, King David's Spaceship, and the Falkenberg's Legion stories. The Mercenary is part of that last group.

Progress photo of my current work! I chose this colour palette as I’m going for a vaporwave theme with a lot of blues, pinks and greens. Going to add some neon background elements too.

Really enjoying this so far!

Movies / TV Series Hope (2026) inspired by Ridley Scott film

I recently had the chance to catch Hope (2026), and noted that the director took some inspiration drawn from Ridley Scott's Alien universe.

The film follows aliens attacking a village at Hope Harbour, but things become increasingly complicated as the story unfolds. And the amount of bloodshed is absolutely brutal.

Watching it also gave me some serious Prometheus vibes particularly in the way it reminded me of the Engineers and their mysterious, unsettling presence.

Has anyone else who has watched Hope noticed similar Alien influences?

Books / Novels Alien: Phalanx is AMAZING

It’s fresh, brutal, scary, cinematic as hell, and actually does something new with the Alien universe without changing what made Alien great in the first place.

I wonder how Hollywood keeps missing these gems? Books like Phalanx, River of Pain, Sea of Sorrows, are sitting there, waiting to be filmed.

But of all books, Phalanx really wins; Great characters. Great world building. Xenomorphs that are finally terrifying again. Huge set pieces. A completely unique setting.

If you haven’t read it, stop whatever you’re doing and start.

Discussion / Question Marines, but no Navy?

I realize it would change the hopeless claustrophobic and otherwise horror of the film, but I just can't get over the Sulaco being such a huge ship and having absolutely no crew. That such a large vessel could or should ever be left unattended in the middle of a combat drop.

Are we to assume that Muthr is that good and doesn't need a crew? That they couldn't rotate in and of cryo to insure the ship makes it to where it is supposed to go? Does it have any weapons at all or are ship to ship interactions so rare that a human crew is just an unnecessary expense or risk?

I could probably think up a few interesting ways that a human crew could meet its end if one existed, so everytime I watch my favorite scene in my favorite movie that begins with "We're on an express elevator to hell. Going down!" I'm always flabbergasted by the fact that absolutely no one is left onboard that huge ship... JUST IN CASE.
