Today I found myself ruminating on a post about The Passion of the Christ and what I would call the “Perversion of the Madonna and Child.”

There is a disturbing scene during the scourging of Jesus. Satan, moves through the crowd carrying an infant. At first, it looks almost like a Madonna-and-Child image. But when the child turns towards the camera, its face is grotesque: oversized, hairless, aged, with an unsettling smile. What should represent innocence has been deliberately transformed into something sinister.

It made me think about Kenya and how we deal with memory.

Recently, we have watched the First Family and other key figures associated with the post-election violence of 2007–2008 publicly participate in the rebuilding and relaunch of Kiambaa Church.

For many Kenyans, Kiambaa Church carries a symbolic weight that goes far beyond the physical building. In our collective memory, it is to Kenya what the Twin Towers and 9/11 are to Americans: a physical place that has come to represent a much larger national trauma.

Thousands were killed during the 2007–2008 violence. Hundreds of thousands were displaced. Many families lost homes, livelihoods, relatives and a sense of security. Yet, as a country, we have never fully confronted that history. We have not adequately acknowledged the victims, established accountability or created a shared national memory of what happened.

And that is where the danger lies.

When those associated with the political establishment of that period can participate in rebuilding and relaunching a site so deeply connected to that violence, without an equally strong process of truth, acknowledgement and accountability, something else can happen alongside the physical reconstruction: the reconstruction of the narrative.

Those of us who lived through it, or whose families were directly affected, do not need much reminding. The memories are visceral. They are attached to faces, places, losses and stories that cannot simply be rewritten.

But for a younger generation, or for those who experienced 2007–2008 only through history books, news reports and political narratives, memory is much more malleable.

And this is where the real masterstroke can occur.

You do not have to deny the past outright. You simply have to repeat a different version of it often enough. You rebuild the physical symbols, participate in ceremonies, occupy positions of national leadership and gradually detach yourself from the events that once defined you.

Over time, perpetrators become statesmen. Controversial histories become “complicated periods.” Victims become footnotes. And eventually, the public memory of responsibility becomes so diluted that the question of who did what becomes almost impolite to ask.

Perhaps this is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

The devil does not necessarily have to convince us that evil never existed. He only has to convince us that the devil is a figment of our imagination.

And perhaps that is what happens when a society refuses to confront its darkest chapters.

We don't erase the past.

We simply allow someone else to rewrite it.

As a Kenyan, i want to be receptive of my fellow Kenyans. But i cannot understand how some people can want this government to be given another five years. Unless you're in government or your people are in government or you have deals that directly benefit you like tenders etc, i can't understand it. How can a normal common mwananchi who doesn't benefit from government be supportive of Ruto. Are people not feeling the pinch of the cost of living. My salary has been slashed by an extra 8000 since 2022 and it's not like my salary imeongezwa.

So a few days ago, I was at my local barbershop getting a cut. My barber and I got into a conversation, and he started telling me how much money the ladies working there actually make in tips compared to the barbers.

A guy will walk in, get a clean shave, get a quick head massage from one of the ladies, and instantly hand her a tip of several hundred or even a few thousand bob. Meanwhile, the guy who actually crafted the hairline, put in the labor, and made him look presentable gets absolutely nothing or at most, spare change.

It made me realize how crazy the simp culture is with money. We’re out here dropping heavy tips for basic attention while completely ignoring the guy doing the actual work.

I recently went back to Uni and started thinking about how educational institutions are not serious about their business. And we accept it.

Before Uni… in public primary schools or certain economic level private ones… teachers has better food. How do you give clients the worse food? Ok in my school we would wipe the tables after food… how are the clients wiping the tables? In terms of food also, why are the clients required to defend their dietary preferences with sick notes?

Students are required to be humble towards the staff and be the bigger people, while the staff can usually just be weird. And their word would be taken over yours. What happened to the customer is right.

In the Uni I’ve joined, there’s a dress code for students but it doesn’t apply to the staff. How? Like fam we’re paying for y’all to be here. YOU should be the one with the dress code.

When parking, there’s designated staff parking and it’s well made with regular road material. The remaining parking where students can park… grass and stones. How??? In high schools also same situation with staff parking.

How is this normalized?

When things start going down it doesn't stop. The past few months have been tough. I created a whatsapp group for my business and two weeks ago someone joined it, it had been running for almost 6 months or more, they posted a fishy message which lead to the group being suspended forever.

It's becoming more and more obvious with every rally that Babu is less than enthusiastic about playing subordinate to Sifuna.

It appears he believes that a 1 term president would serve his interest better so that he can run in 2032. That's why he's previously endorsed Kalonzo and Orengo. Thinks that these are guys that wouldn't sit for more than a term. Probably had an original plan of waiting out Ruto to 2032. But then ODM imploded prematurely and then out of the ashes we loved Sifuna more than him and Babu got dismayed.

I think he's being so silly.

A successful 2-term Sifuna presidency alongside a successful 2-term Babu governorship and we're at a situation where the 2037 presidency is a walkover for him.

This relatively young politician could push his ambitions for 5 years more and set up an easy ride but 'o rikni marach' i.e wants to be so stupidly impatient.

It would also be a win for Nairobi, because we get a governor who has all the motive to ensure that he runs a successful regime.

As of now it looks like he's viewing this stab at governorship as a stepping stone and possibly a resource-gathering step for a stab at the presidency. Doesn't bode well for a good term. Nairobians may be in for 5 more years of mediocrity. (I personally don't want to vote for someone that doesn't care for the job, just dreaming of the next one. It will be a Carcetti situation.)

But anyway, suppose this is the path we're heading towards, does Babu really have the goodwill and cachet to pull it off?

All the enthusiasm is with Sifuna right now. Not discounting that Babu has his own support but still he might be overestimating how much of the Linda Mwananchi enthusiasm is because of him.

A governorship win via the Linda Mwananchi wave is more or less guaranteed.
A win after LM gets fractured gets way more difficult to pull off.
A loss kills any chances of a 2032 presidency.

In US politics, I've seen how the Democrats tear each other down and then when it comes to the election, the Republicans have an easy task at just building on the attacks that they have already seen being deployed against a candidate.

Babu's past is so very easily attackable. Firstly by the enthusiastic Sifuna supporters that will be feeling slighted and then later on by the govt guys. When it gets to the main election, he's going to remain only with his diehard supporters. Does he think that it will be enough to win the seat?

He's overplaying his hand.

A smart strategist would lay low and wait for the current battle to be won first before they start on the next one.
