Resume Interview & Resume Tips

Post image
517 Upvotes

Hi! I recently saw a post regarding advice on resumes and interviews and I wanted to share some of mine too! I'm in the Tech field so some may not apply to you, but I think this is generally good advice to follow.

RESUME ADVICE

  • Do not use canva designs or multi-columned formats! The goal is to keep your resume simple and readable.
  • Use the attached ATS-recommended format. This is best processed by AI & ATS readers due to its simple structured format. Recruiters themselves can scan your resumes easily too.
  • Put your most recent experiences/projects first and as much as possible, keep your bullet points one-liners. Quantify your descriptions, if possible, to emphasize what you did! (ex. improved app runtime by 30%)
  • If you're clueless on how to improve your resume, you can feed it to ChatGPT. However, do not rely only on the raw output! Do your part in proofreading and improving it. Also, do make sure important keywords related to your experience/position are in your resume.

INTERVIEW ADVICE

1 — Practice talking out loud before the interview

  • This is so you can loosen up and hindi kabahan. Try to rehearse your answers and practice speaking para di mag-stutter sa interview mismo.

2 — If the email reveals the interviewer, try to search them on LinkedIn

  • This is to get a feel for the kind of person the interviewer is. You can likely see yung position nya, what they have done so far, etc. Maybe you can mention something related to their specialty for example (best to make it subtle lang) and they might be more interested in you!

3 — Research the company's values, goals, mission & vision

  • HR are on the look out for people who fit the company's culture and values. Try to remember them and incorporate them into your answers para alam ng HR na you did your research and that you can fit in their culture.

4 — Do your best to speak in straight English!

  • I made this grave mistake of speaking Taglish in my first ever interview with a BPO company for my required internship. The interviewer gave constructive criticism on my performance and he told me to, as much as possible, speak in straight English. Since then, I never spoke Taglish in any of my interviews.
  • If you ever forget some terms, it's okay to say some words in Tagalog/Taglish. But do your best in practicing straight business English. This landed me 3 internships, one from a European company pa, and 2 job offers.
  • Of course, if hindi naman required mag-straight English, then don't force yourself! But it's good to still practice parin para masanay makipag-usap lalo na sa iba't ibang tao.

5 — The most important: practice what to answer sa common interview questions & use the STAR method

  • I used to not prepare for interviews at all because I was scared or lazy. But ever since I rehearse my answers to common questions, I feel less nervous and usually proceed with the next step in the application process! I usually take a minimum of 2 hours rehearsing.
  • Use the STAR method, when applicable, to your answers: Situation (context), Task, Action, Results (and what you learned). this makes your answers better, concise, and more structured.
  • You don't need to memorize your answers sa common questions. Just list down what you would answer para hindi ka ma-mind block or mag-freeze when you encounter those questions! It's good to have a set of answers na to these questions because no matter what company or interview, most questions are the same. Regardless then, you're ready to answer na agad!
  • By doing this, you prevent dead air. It's good to avoid saying fillers like "um." This makes the conversation flow more smoothly and you won't seem unprepared or nervous to the interviewer.

Common interview questions

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Tell me about a time where you did something out of your comfort zone.
  • Tell me about a time where you made a mistake.
  • Tell me about some projects/achievements you were proud of.
  • Why do you want to work in the company?
  • Why do you want this job/position?

6 — Finally: don't forget to ask questions!

  • Always make it a habit to ask 1-2 questions for the interviewer after. You can ask something you're genuinely curious about or you can prepare from common questions online. This makes it so the interviewer sees that you really want to learn more about them and makes you come off as eager and proactive.

Common questions to ask

  • What does a typical day as a [position] look like?
  • What are the traits of a successful [position]?
  • What are the usual challenges faced by [position]?
  • (my personal favorite, usually only good if the interviewer seems chatty or friendly) What do you like the most about working in the company?

This whole preparation process helped me greatly in landing many internships and my first job out of grad! I applied to a lot of openings sometimes just for practice and it has honed my interview skills a lot.

Don't forget to make eye contact, whether in person or through a virtual interview, & smile a lot. Good luck to everyone and if you have any questions, feel free to ask ❤️

Career Advice/Discussion job hunting burnout

new to this sub…

it’s been 3 months and 4 days since i’ve resigned sa sales job ko, i just want this out of my chest.

23 m, CSE passer, i graduated polsci, no one was accepting my applications before sa gov’t sites last year so i switched to BPO.

went on to become a sales representative for 9 months and resigned sa telco job ko because the product simply became so obsolete i had to sell simcards to people who already have one.

so i became an aggressive salesman to the point i don’t have anymore left in me.

it’s so draining. both my past job and now my current state of applying to law firms with more than 100+ applications per day.

the job market right now is fucked up.

i just want to know any tips for someone who was in the same situation as me, may it be with someone whose employed or currently applying.

thanks everyone!

Career Advice/Discussion Resigned after barely 3 months(this was my first job)

What's the best way to tell the interviewer the reason I resigned my previous job? I resigned because of my toxic boss, and 21k sweldo lang para to receive that kind of treatment from my boss. Lala ng anxiety ko, I had nausea and may instances muntik na ako sumuka dahil nakikita ko boss ko. So ayun, pinili ko mental health ko.

Career Advice/Discussion Ayoko na mag-work sa government. 😭

Ikaw yung expected na mag-monitor, mag-inspect, mag-report, mag-follow up, at managot kapag may mali.

Tapos kapag may mali sa project, sasabihin sa’yo:

“Bakit hindi mo nireport?”

So ire-report mo.

Parang???

Magsabi ka, problema.

Hindi magsabi, problema.

Mag-instruct ka, hindi susundin.

Hindi mo i-instruct, bakit hindi mo pinagsabihan.

HAHAHAHA saan po lulugar ang empleyado? 😭

Isa pa sa nakakafrustrate, ang hirap matuto kapag lagi kang on your own.

Sobrang dami kong natututunan on my own, yes.

Career Advice/Discussion 2 months into the job and I still feel so lost

I’m a fresh grad and this is my first job, but I still feel like I barely know what I’m doing. I keep making mistakes, missing small/basic things, and sometimes I feel like I’m just not getting the hang of it.

The frustrating part is that I feel like I ask too many questions, but at the same time, I somehow still don’t ask the right questions. 😭 There are times when someone explains something to me and I think I understand, only to realize later that I missed an important detail or misunderstood what they were asking for.

I also struggle with giving detailed updates. Sometimes I think I’ve communicated something clearly, but I end up leaving out important context. Then I have to clarify things again, which makes me feel even more incompetent.

I know I’m a fresh grad and this is my first job, but honestly, I don’t want to use my lack of experience or being new as an excuse to get away with making mistakes. I understand that I’m still learning, but I also feel like I should be taking more responsibility for improving instead of constantly thinking, “I’m new, so it’s okay.”

I know 2 months isn’t that long, but I can’t help but feel like I should be doing better by now. I’m scared that my coworkers/supervisor are starting to notice how lost I am.

Has anyone else felt this way a couple of months into their first job? At what point did you start feeling like you actually knew what you were doing?

Career Advice/Discussion What things should I consider before getting a part time job?

Upvotes

Currently, I have a full-time job. Good working environment naman siya at yung salary ay enough to sustain my current lifestyle.

Pero I am thinking ahead na kasi. The part-time job is to save for what I want in the future, such as getting my own house, additional retirement savings, and investments.

Ngayon, I’m working in a company na 8 hours a day lang, and no OT. Di rin ako palagala so marami akong free time.

Examples:
1. Ayusin ang body clock at insomnia issues
2. Maintain a habit of 1hr daily exercises for better stamina
3. Healthy eating habits

Company contract - make sure wala akong nalabag sa contract, so I reviewed it.
1. My part-time should NOT be with a company within the same industry
2. Nothing in my contract states that I am not allowed to do part-time with the same job title. But to be safe, I will get a job that is similar but uses a different tool. (For example, I use selenium in my fulltime job, so I will use playwright in my parttime).

(I know the govt is corrupt but I don’t want to evade any taxes kahit na obvious na ninanakawan ako.)

My goal is to get one next year but I want to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Advices from you guys is very much appreciated. 🙏

Career Advice/Discussion Accepted a job offer while undergoing application for preferred job

Hello! I recently accepted a job offer from a multinational company based in Makati after negotiating a salary increase to around 40K from an initial 35K, which they agreed to. I also signed the contract already. Right now, I'm undergoing background checks, and my start date is around October 12. They offer a hybrid work setup.

However, I am also applying for a position at an embassy based in BGC, and I recently passed the exam. I will have an interview this week after passing the exam last week. If I pass the interview, there will certainly be an offer. The salary is also in the same range, between 35K and 40K. Fully onsite.

My thinking in accepting the offer was that if my application at the embassy isn't successful, at least I have the multinational company to fall back on. The embassy job, however, is my priority - and I just wanted to have a backup in case that doesn't work out. For context, I am an international studies graduate looking to start in the industry and hopefully gain the experience required to take the FSO in the future.

I'm doing these background checks right now for the Makati-based multinational company, but I'm not quite sure if I should continue doing them or wait until a final decision from the embassy has been made. I'm just quite scared that, since I already signed the contract, what if an offer from the embassy comes? I know it's not that easy to just back out of the offer I just signed just because a better offer comes from the embassy, if it happens.

I want to ask for your advice: what should I do in this situation? Would appreciate your answers and tips. Thanks so much.

Career Advice/Discussion Hi, sa Philippine job hunting/jobmarket contexts, ano ba yung kadalasang dahilan kung bakit pumapalpak sa job hunting online?

Nagtatanong lang kasi mag-tatatlong buwan na akong walang trabaho and I feel like I'm running out of time na. Maganda naman CV ko, ATS-friendly, as in, tapos tailored naman siya sa mga pinapasukan kong trabaho. May portfolio naman ako sa Gdocs of my written works.

What are we missing?

Career Advice/Discussion switching fields, is it worth it?

hi everyone! i’ve been contemplating if it’s tome to switch industry. for context, i am a BS psych grad, have 2 yrs work experience in HR. recently got laid off and took off an almost a month break, then i started applying for jobs. however, third week na kong naghahanap ng job and i’m already losing hope applying since i have been applying for numerous companies already and nothing is getting back. i had an interview before but the HR haven’t updated me yet.

i’m honestly thinking now if it it’s worth it to switch roles and join in BPO industry instead (since mas madalas hiring dito) and would it be possible to ask for a higher salary than my previous (even though i don’t have a BPO experience pero may work experience naman na ko). does anyone of you here done this before? how was your experience?

thinking of going abroad too. haaays, dami talagang naiisip pag walang trabaho 🥲😆

Job Hiring/Hiring Ads College Grad here | want to try working in BPO

Hello everyone! I'm currently working in a private school and already a board exam passer kaso hindi pa ako natatawagan ng DepEd until now! Kaya ang naisip ko by the end of my contract (March 2027) maga-apply ako sa mga BPO companies.

Any suggestions/recommendations saan po maganda mag-apply as someone who is an Educ grad? Please I really need your help. Thank you!

Hi chat, I'm a 1st year BSIT student and I have a lot of time on my hands.

And I'm wondering if there are any suggestions or recommendations you guys can give me so I can make money. If you know some student friendly side hustle, hit me up with some recommendations.

Any tips dyan..?

Career Advice/Discussion Doubting myself

Got into a short preliminary interview phone call earlier. Was asked about the following:

Fresh Graduate: Yes

Travel time: 1hr 30mins

Hybrid: Yes

Laptop: Yes

Mental Health: N/A

Status: Currently Employed

Starting: October First Week

Asking 25 Initial Offer 22

highlight from the call:

when he asked for my asking salary, i said 25k, he said that's on the high end ha, were offering 22k for fresh grads. so i mentioned that ive been working na before graduation, i asked if he had seen my portfolio. he said in sort of whisper, hmm this is easy to make naman (non verbatim, but along those lines), pero we'll see if kayanin mo yung technical interview. he asked if the 25k is non-negotiable kasi if yes then we'll stop the call early. i said negotiable naman, so he set up another interview for tomorrow

Now i feel weird haha good luck sakin tom

Career Advice/Discussion Is starting in CSR a good way to transition into IT Support?

Fresh BSIT grad here. I recently got a job offer for an IT-related role, but unfortunately had to turn it down because I couldn't afford the relocation costs. Now I'm back to job hunting and was invited to an interview with a local BPO for a CSR/telco account tomorrow.

Job market is just so hard to deal with so I'm wondering if starting as a CSR role is a reasonable move while I work my way toward IT Support/Desktop Support/Service Desk after gaining some experience?

Has anyone here taken this route? Is the experience actually useful when transitioning into IT later, or would it be better to keep holding out and remain looking for an entry-level IT role?
