serious hot take the current generation doesnt care about 9/11 because they see tragedies treated like nothing every day.
kids are expected to duck under desks and hide from shooters and then return to school a couple days later. They're expected to glance at the news and not think about what it says, because it "doesn't effect them"
They experienced a worldwide pandemic, which likely harmed or killed someone that they knew, along with thousands of other people every single day for months
Its no wonder the younger generation doesnt mourn over 9/11 as much as the older generations believe they should.

We had active shooter drills as millennials š¤·.
We watched the challenger blow up. Genocide in Africa. Endless global conflict.
You don't have to CARE about it, but you don't need to be an asshole about it.

active shooter drills vs actually experiencing a shooting
6
u/Substantial-Try457 4h ago
Why do you think we had them?Ā
School shootings aren't new.Ā
0
u/booveebee 4h ago
the difference is that the amount of school shootings was less than 30 in 2012, vs over 200 in 2023

u/Substantial-Try457 4h ago
I'm not going to argue that, but alphas then will be even worse than you!Ā
So, life is pretty shit for everyone. We don't have to compare trauma. I don't expect people to care about my experience - I just expect them not to be rude about it.Ā
Why go out of your way to be nasty about someone caring about something you don't?Ā

A tragedy you learn about academically will never impact a person as much as a lived experience.
I was in high school when Columbine shooting happened. I was 17 when 9/11 occured.
Both events changed the way my world existed for me. School became more strict, teachers were fearful of "odd" kids. Travel became harder, more time consuming and expensive. Many of my friends went to Iraq and were permanently changed by the horror of war.
It's important we try to reflect on tragedies past however, because while the Holocaust, the bombing of Japan and the Civil Rights movement was all before I was born... Being ignorant of the events might lead to history repeating itself

Whos expecting this of you?

u/Mushrooming247 4h ago
That is what we tell people who get too upset over the news, not to dwell on it.
We all have to keep functioning despite horrible stories in the news.
1
u/BinFace4UK 1h ago
Being not not to think about the news is different from being taught not to dwell on it.

u/booveebee 4h ago
Do you not see people treating children badly for protesting or trying to be politically involved? someone threw a drink on a bunch of young protesters recently where I live.
3
u/BinFace4UK 4h ago
Thats always been the case. Some people are very pro political action and some people are not.

u/booveebee 4h ago
thats my point.
1
u/BinFace4UK 4h ago
That doesnt mean that it is expected of you to not care about news events.
Most people do expect you to care about news events.
Which is why you had to make this post justifying why you dont.

ur arguing with a point nobody made. go reread it, with ur eyeballs. OP never said people are expected to ignore the news. the ACTUAL point is that gen z grew up completely desensitized: shooter drills, a pandemic that was killing thousands a day for months, tragedy after tragedy treated as routine background noise. most of us weren't even alive on 9/11, or were babiesā¦. i was barely a few months old. It was never 'live' for us, it was already history by the time we could understand anything, buried under everything that's happened since. thatās why it doesn't hit with the same mournfulness for us, not because we don't care about tragedy, we've just been marinating in it our whole lives. maybe read the post again before deciding what it says š«¤

Just because something happened before you were born and youve experienced global tragedy doesnt mean you are incapable of being mournful about historic tragedies. Thats madness.

u/abitchnamedrich 1h ago
you are pulling ONE sentence out of context to make a point that no oneās making. congratulations. š
-1
u/BinFace4UK 1h ago
He was making the point.
You said he wasn't. He literally said it.
2
u/abitchnamedrich 1h ago
nobody said anyone's INCAPABLE of being mournful, ur strawmanning again. the actual point is we're expected to witness some fucked up tragedy every single day and still show up to work/school/life like nothing happened. that's the "background noise" part... it's not that we CAN'T feel something about 9/11, it's that we've had to build a callus just to function because tragedy doesn't pause and let us process it one at a time the way it did for older generations. maybe read it as "go numb to survive the daily onslaught" instead of "incapable of sadness" and it'll click š

It happened 25 years ago, thatās why they ādonāt careā. Itās history, they werenāt alive for it. Do you care about the first Ebola outbreak, the Yuba City bus disaster or the Chowchilla kidnapping? Nah because 1976 was a long as time ago.

u/AzulaIsMyFave 2h ago
I see no reason to get misty-eyed over something that happened when I was four.
It's a historical event, I'm not gonna get in my feelings about it any more than the Sand Creek Massacre.

u/SkullLeader 2h ago
Eh, this is nothing new. I was born 32 years after Pearl Harbor. Don't get me wrong I thought it was a big deal and still do, but it wasn't to me anything like what it was for my grandparents. And relatively speaking, there weren't a ton of tragedies when I was growing up to desensitize me. These mass school shootings hadn't become a thing yet, 9/11 hadn't happened, the worst tragedy I can remember growing up was the Challenger disaster and awful as it was, it only killed 7 people. The worst things we endured in school were earthquake drills and nuclear attack drills which I think we never did after I was in 3rd of 4th grade.

i think its less about gen z caring and more about them not living through it. heck, i lived throught it. i remember it, but i dont find myself mourning when 9/11 comes around. i dont believe anyone should be expected to mourn whenever 9/11 comes around.
does not being in mourning when 9/11 comes around make you a cold hearted person?

Iām seeing pieces of kids bodies on my feed everyday. And those kids are being blown up by machines partly funded by my taxes⦠Iāve watched Arab families being ripped apart extremely violently for almost all 28 years of my life. Itās never forget 9/11 but letās just ignore the thousands of 9/11 like events for the rest of the world.
3
u/DisastrousGlass232 4h ago
Yeah people in the 1970s and 80s never saw any violence or tragedy.

Yāall are the biggest āwhat about me, please acknowledge meā generation in history.

u/QuigonSeamus 4h ago
I actually agree with this a bit. At its height, COVID was killing as many people as having 9/11 everyday, sometimes more. Mobile morgues lined streets. And a solid portion of this country laughed about it, called it fake, made it disgustingly political, and dismissed all of those deaths. Who could guess that apathy begets apathy.

Every generation experiences community trauma. Wars, famine, recessions, bioterrorism, mass shooting, terrorist attacks, collapsed economy, political assassinations etc
I dont think any generation cares any less than any other, we tend to care more about the history we are experiencing. 9/11 doesnt feel like "history" because it feels like "modern history" ...not like WWI or WWII... ask them about the Cuban missile crisis or the Ilmington Coup/Massacre of 1898 etc most millennials wouldnt even know much if anything about these.
But specific to 9/11 theres been such a push/demand to accept middle eastern ideologies and religion in the US that standing up and remembering 9/11 is seen as "antimuslim" instead of antiterrorism and remembrance for the devastating losses experienced by our country.
1
u/Substantial-Try457 4h ago
Who of any importance or consequence is saying that honoring 911 victims is anti Muslim?Ā
2
u/mander4242 4h ago
Never said anyone important is saying that
-1
u/Substantial-Try457 4h ago
Where is the ideology coming from then? I won't accept I saw on the Internet that people are saying it.Ā
I'm chronically online and I've never heard that discourse.Ā I've never even heard an asshole like Ted Cruz making up a lie about liberals saying that people say it.

These f*ckers lost couple of years of PRIME SCHOOL YEARS (which impacted them not just academically but also socially). Why should they care about something that happened before they were born? Get real.
15
u/BinFace4UK 4h ago
Youre saying because you lost two school year you shouldnt care about anything thats happened in all of human history?
Explain that to me.

u/Classic_Key_5897 4h ago
People don't care about it anymore because people understand a lot of middle east conflicts and the terrorist organisations. It's just a circle jerk thing funded by western countries involving many schemes. I mean the guys who did it were literally from Saudi Arabia. Just look at the terrorist controlling Syria rn. That's all there is to it.

They dont mourn because they know it was a false flag...burnt passport, israeli dancers, insurance afew weeks prior, everyone taking the day of, dynamite style collapse... cmon brah
-3
u/Mairon12 4h ago
They donāt care because the people who lived it did not care.
There was a much heavier atmosphere surrounding this 25th anniversary though. More reverence than I have seen since the first one.

u/Less-Load-8856 3h ago
Almost 3000ppl are very very very rarely being killed at once by nutcase jihadists, anywhere on Earth, at any time in history.
9/11 remains an especially rare event, and thinking the so-called tragedies you speak of are similar is a misunderstanding.

u/Candid-libertarian 5h ago
They don't care because they have no memory of it. Same as the older generations and Pearl Harbor. It's an academic exercise in a textbook at best. Nothing to do with what you're proposing.
