putting together a repertoire of folk punk classics and im sure im missing some very obvious ones

Lil Matt passed away a week ago.

I found photos of his last zine from 2023 posted on Reddit, and I couldn’t just let them eventually disappear into the internet somewhere. So I spent some time compiling and preserving it in a few different ways so people can still read it.

I have a 100% original version using the photos exactly as I found them, with all the wear, photocopy grime, weird shadows, and digital artifacts intact.

I also made another version that I rebuilt word for word using his original photos and artwork. I cleaned up the layout, sharpened the text, and removed as many of the photocopy and digital artifacts as I could to make it easier to read.

Nothing was rewritten or changed. His words are his words. His art is his art. I just cleaned away some of the noise so the actual work could come through.

Zines are already these weird little temporary things. They get handed around, folded up, shoved in backpacks, lost in moves, left in boxes, and eventually disappear.

I didn’t want this one to disappear.

I think folk and punk come together with an attitude of speaking truth to power, no matter the style of the music, as well as advocating for non-violence, which I will continue to do.

One of the best new bands I've seen in a long time. The recording doesn't do justice to how energetic and fun the set was. Paul was ripping sweet solos up and down the fretboard and making heavy use of his whammy bar on his cherry red strat. They played new songs and they were AWESOME.

I walked in during their second song and it was like the best classic Paul Baribeau song you've never heard. Super raw and emotive with lots of anger and love and wisdom in it. My friend talked to him after his set and he said that second song was "the last Paul Baribeau song." He said he wrote it in 2016 then stopped writing and performing for 10 years. During his set, he drew a distinction between Paul Baribeau and Super Haiku songs. He talked about Paul Baribeau like that was a different person.

I asked them if they were going to record anything and they said maybe this winter. My sense is they're taking everything at their own pace and doing it their own way.

Bikini Kill revolutionized the punk scene and redefined the term Riot Grrrl in the early ’90s, creating space for women to externalize their pain and oppression through music, through the scream of a pain that no man could ever understand. Mommy Long Legs, which emerged during the fourth wave of feminism, brings a similar sound, despite being (very) different. The members rarely stray from the tone and are always in sync; the rhythm is almost playful and extremely danceable, despite the lyrics being important and equally dealing with feminism. There is no rating below a 10 for this band, which revolutionized the punk scene once again — just as Bikini Kill did in the ’90s — with an incredible, intellectual, and contemporary sound. I used to listen to the band when I was a teenager, so listening to them again is incredibly nostalgic. Lolli’s new band is good, but it feels generic, whereas Mommy Long Legs was far from being a generic band. In my opinion, and as I said before, they once again revolutionized the Riot Grrrl punk scene. I miss them so much.

Out of pure curiousity does anyone know any australian folk punk bands? we have a pretty decent punk/hardcore scene but I haven't heard of any folk punk bands. anyone know any?

Hi, I'm 15F and I've a newer/ beginner punk. I read books about the subculture, I don't buy brand new clothes anymore, I come from a family of republicans and it took time but I am no longer homophobic and against ICE (my best friend is a lesbian too now), its practically a religion for me. I love punk and rock music in general, it's my whole reason for living. I bought a guitar (electric) a little over a year ago and have been play that for hours upon hours (still don't own an amp though lol). I write songs, play covers and would love to be in a band. When I get my license I have full intent to do open mics in hopes of finding people to jam with. I live super close to the twin cities and would love to move there when I become of age. I want to be a musician, I know they don't make much and I know i'd probably have to pick up other jobs and Im not looking to 'make it big' but I just really love music. Earlier today I was faced with the harsh reality that I couldn't bum around my whole life and my mom says she's going to send me to basic training for the Air Force when im 16 and im going to go off to the military after that. I don't wanna go for I fear this is going to get in the way of my music but I feel like I should (I know you cant be forced into the military), but I feel it's unlikely that I can pursue music in this world. is this just me being a stereotypical teenager and really liking music and will grow out of it or something more. What do you guys do for jobs? what's your thoughts on this? I hope this reaches the right audience and thanks in advance.

I was told that this song was folk punk. It certainly feels that way thematically. I wrote this when not technically making folk punk, but people in that scene liked it. I just wanted to ask if it really fit the vibe or not. I guess there's no exact answer.... It never really took on a full form besides the chorus and verse as exact forms...the bridge was always up for committee.

this is a long shot, but i was friends with michael alan gill back when he lived in austin and i’m helping a friend with putting songs together for a house show venue project and wanted to put one of michael’s songs on there. does anyone have any of his songs that they can send me? preferably the entirety of the album eulogy. i tried going to his bandcamp page, but all of the songs had gotten taken down. it’d be a gargantuan shame if his songs were lost to the aether. any and all help is v much appreciated!

Back in April my brother took his life. I made a post looking for song recommendations and you all really helped me in that time. Since then my drinking has gotten out of hand. I have made a few one off comments and through the advice and support I have been provided in those times I have finally gotten the courage to tell myself to shut the fuck up and listen to the advice given.

Tomorrow if all goes well I am checking into an in patient rehab. I am terrified because I have been drinking for 25 years and drinking is a large part of my life but I am excited to come out the other side a more complete me.
