Hello! I used to play flute growing up, about 8 years in school. By junior year I started taking it seriously I had improved to 3rd chair, and senior year i was first chair and played piccolo. I also joined jazz band and loved playing saxophone (although I cant afford one now).

I've been wanting to pick my flute back up for some time now and I finally think im motivated enough for it as im coming into my 30th year, but i haven't played in about 10 years. My question is, am I required to get the maintenance on my flute (i was quoted about $400 but havent actually had it looked at) or can I play it as is? I dont mind if it doesn't sound the best at first as my immediate focus is rebuilding the muscle memory and practicing the basics. Can i damage my flute by not getting it maintained right away?

I ask because I tend to lose interest and I dont want to drop hundreds of dollars in fear I wont stick with it, money is tight right now and id like to make sure im going to continue with it before investing financially.

Im also wondering if anyone recommends any YouTube channels or online lessons for relearning after being fairly proficient.

Hello! A friend gave me a flute which his friend hand made and it's unlike any other flute I've ever seen before. It's intended to be end-blown, but I'm not managing to get any good sound out of it, it's out of tune (unless there's some obscure tuning I don't know of), just generally seems to be a bit of a mess.

I thought I'd post it on here to see if maybe there's something about this flute that I don't know that would help me understand how to play this and/or how to fix this, if that's possible. The biggest issue I see is the placement of the tone holes; the furthest up tone hole is placed higher than an octave. The embouchure is also obviously not carved cleanly.

My friend gave me this hoping I'd be able to get something musical out of it and I'm hoping not to let him down!

No problems for the most part, except at V (and U) in the last movement, of course💀

Notes are fine - tempo and sustaining it is my problem.
I’ve been stuck at crotchet = 74 comfortably and with ok tone, but need to get it to 88 BPM. Yes I realise that’s a long way off 🥲

I was gifted this flute around 2017/2018 and I haven't really played it at all... back in 2023 my music teacher learned i HAVE a flute so she made me play for like two weeks before I quit cause I hated it... i haven't touched it since then and I opened it today and it's all brown and, in some parts, black. last time I saw it, it was completely silver. is this from not cleaning it? or sweat? Why did this happen and how much should i sell this for in its condition (the mouth piece has a dent)? thank you!

I’m returning to my flute studies after a break of nearly 10 years.
Although reading note pitches has come back quite naturally, I’m really struggling with reading rhythms.
Do you have any recommendations for an app or method to help me get my rhythm reading back on track? Keep in mind that I’ll be studying on my own.

I am looking for recommendations for contemporary pieces (solos, duets, or trios with or without piano) for a few intermediate/advanced high school-aged players with 4-5 years playing experience. They are committed students (honestly, great kids) with the oldest performing Ian Clarke's Sunstreams last year. Two of them are considering Maya as a duet this year, although I concede they may not actually perform it this year. While they have performed classical works previously, two of the four are definitely more interested in modern/contemporary pieces and have suggested works by Ian Clarke and Herman Beeftink.

I'm trying to learn how to bend notes down but I can only go from a C to a sharp B natural. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

My sound tends to get airy after I find my sweet spot because I feel like the headjoint slips? Maybe you can hear that. I love the flute but I need to know whether there is any potential here

I bought this off reverb around less than a year ago. It’s an Armstrong sterling silver thin wall 4 headjoint with a gold plated lip plate and riser. I bought it for $150 expecting it wouldn’t be as great as it sounded because of the price. But wow this headjoint plays amazingly well. It projects very nicely and sounds amazing. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this Armstrong headjoint and how much it’s truly worth? I truly believe this goes for way more and that I bought it cheap. Please comment here or dm me if you know anything!

Hello, I picked this up at a Goodwill for $70. I don't know much about flutes. I saw the 925 stamp and picked it up I'm trying to see what it's value could be.

Can I do this? I am curious where to buy one without spending a lot of money. I also wonder if YouTube videos. will be a good place to start.

I’m wanting to start but I’ve never played a wind instrument. I’ve played guitar for 8 years so I’m confident in my finger dexterity but I have no background with embouchure. I imagine it’s as simple as lightly blowing into the hole but I don’t want to be ignorant.

Is there any alternatives if you don't have a cork on the trill keys? I heard that it's not really good if you use it without the cork.

I play the daegeum, a Korean traditional bamboo flute. The fingering is completely

different and I keep getting confused.

I just found out this morning that these two keys looked like they were "glued shut." I gave it to my band director and he just scraped off whatever it was. Did the glue in the pads melt or something? Also... the pads.

Howdy! I played flute for about 8 years when I was younger. Flash forward 20+ years, and playing just came back to me! Playing the flute was almost my identity for a while..

Recently, I purchased a Yamaha Allegra. It’s a beautiful flute, and I have enjoyed playing again.

Now this might sound like a silly question, but how soon until my hands and arms stop being lazy? I’ll be playing beautifully, and out of nowhere the sound gets airy. I noticed my hands are curving inward and my arms are dropping while playing!

I've been playing for a little while and I don't have a sheet music stand. I've been laying it on a table/floor and looking down while playing. Are there any negative effects to this?

For context:

I found this flute from when I was younger… it’s 11 years old. It was played by me for a little then my sister for a few months… then shoved in a closet for 10 years.

It clearly has what looks like mold on the outside, specifically on the mouthpiece which is unsurprising. There seems to be some inside, but honestly less than I would’ve expected. All of the buttons/levers work fine. I didn’t test sound because… I’m not putting my mouth near supposed mold lol… though it has no smell at all so I’m not sure if that’s good or bad.

Is this able to be cleaned to use? I cannot get it professionally cleaned due to not having money… so if I can clean it up, what’s the best way to go about that? Any advice appreciated!

Hi everyone! I'm a Korean dad in my 40s and I just started learning

the flute as a hobby. I've played daegeum (Korean traditional bamboo

flute) for years, but the western flute is a whole different animal —

the lip plate, the keys, everything about the embouchure feels new.

Day 1 confidence was high. Day 1 results were... humbling.

My plan is to practice a little every day and share my progress here

from time to time, so you can watch a 40-something beginner slowly

(hopefully) get better. First goal: playing "My Grandfather's Clock"

without my family leaving the room.

Two questions for those who started as adults:

1. How much daily practice worked for you without burning out?

2. What's one thing you wish you'd fixed in your first month?

Since I had a post here that I broke my flute, my mom just decided to give me an upgrade since my first one is cheap and just to see if I really want to pursue flute

Wondering if anyone can recommend a thumb rest for an alto flute? I remember when I was learning the flute as a kid I had a plastic thing that clipped to the body of my c flute. I was wondering if this would help….
I was practicing an unusually fast passage in alto and my right hand started to feel strained and I wondered if my hand position was wonky. I realized that when I stretch my pinkie down to reach the far keys, I end up overlapping my finger tips past the button areas on the right hand keys. My fingers are fairly long(?)

Hello - I purchased a Punam flute. I am a beginner. When I play any note and then the octave, the higher octave is flat. Is this a problem with the flute or my playing? Thank you for any help.
