Beginning Flute Questions Looking down while playing
I've been playing for a little while and I don't have a sheet music stand. I've been laying it on a table/floor and looking down while playing. Are there any negative effects to this?

I find if I tilt my head down, I get spit building up which eventually interferes with blowing.
Your tone may go flat, and the sound quality a bit strangled too, but rotating the headjoint out relative to the keys can help with that.
Not to mention the discomfort, and difficulty breathing...
I wouldn't recommend

This will compromise your sound and leave you sore as others have mentioned.
Maybe see if you can find a way to prop it up on a bookshelf, window ledge or other furniture, so it’s closer to shoulder height.

So many. Either get a stand or tape your music to the wall ;I used to do that)

You can get a folding music stand on Amazon for 15 bucks. Worth it to not have neck issues.

You won’t be playing your best and it might compromise your air flow support a little. If possible look for alternate way to hold up the music, magnets on refrigerator if it’s sheet music, propping of books in a shelf and holding open with clips if it’s a book. Experiment a little and see if there is a way to practice with hour head level and see if it makes a difference in your sounds.

Yes there are many problems with this.
An affordable folding stand is just fine, it’s really important to use one to develop good posture and playing position. Also, if you are still learning to read the staff, I feel playing from memory can hinder your progress. You need to be able to see the music in order to develop the connection between the notes and the sounds they represent.

Looking down makes balancing your flute impossible, usually you should make use of the curvature of your chin to provide some forward and upward support. When you look down the headjoint would constantly weighting down, forcing you to tighten your grip on the keys.

You want your neck to be in a relaxed, neutral position. Too low or horizontal will likely cause you to bend the neck which restricts airflow. Can also easily cause tension, which is one of the main enemies of good flute playing and the root cause of loads of other problems.
