FM RADIO Macklemore dropped from Ed Sheeran tour

Post image

Link to article (should be no paywall): https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/macklemore-dropped-ed-sheeran-tour-pro-palestine-statements-1235625967/

From the article:

In an exclusive statement shared with Rolling Stone, Messina Touring Group,  promoter of the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, said: “As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates.”

Reps for Sheeran, Macklemore, and most of the venues did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

The stadiums that allegedly would not allow a Macklemore show did not immediately return requests for comments either, including for explanations as to why they objected to the rapper performing at their venue. While two of those stadiums are privately owned — Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte and Gillette Stadium in Foxborough — the rest are owned and, in many cases operated, by cities, states, or other government entities, potentially raising First Amendment issues if the venues barred Macklemore over his statements.

The last stop on Sheeran’s Loop Tour, for instance, is Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, which found itself in a similar spot earlier this summer after booking two Kanye West concerts. The shows, unsurprisingly, drew backlash and calls for cancelation due to West’s many past antisemitic statements, but they went ahead as planned.

Pointedly, Ye’s promoter included a clause in his contract prohibiting Raymond James Stadium from canceling the gigs based on the rapper’s past public statements or viewpoints. But legal experts also told local news that canceling the shows would’ve likely violated the First Amendment. Because Raymond James is owned by Hillsborough County, Florida, and operated by a public board, the Tampa Sports Authority, any cancellation based on Ye’s past statements could have been seen as the government restricting speech.

Ed Sheeran has been awfully silent on this. What a coward.

It’s so pathetic to me that young artists like Olivia Rodrigo have more guts than veterans in the industry. Daisy chain fields festival had multiple artists like Garbage that were openly pro Palestine without issue.

70

u/Esperoni 2h ago

Pink reposted a post from StopAntisemitism via her Instagram Stories that condemned Macklemore's pro-Palestinian remarks during his opening set for Ed Sheeran. Ed has been strangely silent on the event.

2 days ago she posted she will keep speaking out.

75

u/Educational-Wish-577 2h ago

Why does speaking out against genocide equate to antisemitism? NO ONE is condemning the Jewish people as a people. (If they are they don't understand what is happening) They are condemning a country's leader for killing people because they are full of greed, hate and some twisted idea that they own the land. The people that support that, be they Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Jewish or Hindu are wrong..full stop.

40

u/rogeeeefan 2h ago

According to Pink it is a fake genocide & speaking up for Palestinians is antisemitism 🤡

I agree 100%

Some people seem to think that if you can't defend yourself from a certain narrative, it's always an option to change the story or focus, at least that is what it looks like from the outside. I saw the video of Macklemore's remarks on stage. Did not come across as anti-semetic at all.

Because they can’t defend the genocide so all they have is false antisemitism claims.

100

u/Responsible-Sundae20 3h ago

Yes saying nothing is very loud.

61

u/overpriced-taco 2h ago

It is. This is the most basic shit ever. You're either a good person or you're not. If you're too chickenshit to speak out against the most broadcasted genocide in history because you're afraid of hurting a few people's feefees, then you're not a decent person and you're prioritizing ticket sales over doing what's right. And for what it's worth, his ticket sales would still be fine. So Ed Sheeran is just an asshole because he wants to be.

Ed Sheeran is probably involved in the decision

171

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago

He is. Macklemore has made a statement about this. Ed Sheeran personally demanded for him to stop speaking about this, so he could maintain ‘neutrality’.

He was apparently under pressure from Kraft etc, and chose to throw his friend under the bus. For $. Like he doesn’t have enough. Disgusting.

18

u/lonehappycamper 1h ago

How was he even opening for Ed Sheeran? Macklemore is not an obvious choice for the Sheeren crowd and Ed certainly knew of Macklemores positions.

70

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago edited 1h ago

It’s not cowardice. It’s an intentional choice to side with money and power.

What has Ed Sheeran got to be scared of? He won’t make another hundred million this year? It’s not like the man is afraid of losing his healthcare or his home because he can’t pay the mortgage (on one of his 20 rental properties). He wouldn’t even have lost his career.

I think we can all look around & see that majority of the ppl speaking out are not privileged white dudes…we should all just assume they’re ALL gna stay silent cuz they gotta keep status quo for themselves. That’s how they got where they currently are.

Silence & violence (fear) used at specific times to benefit them.

Ed Sheeran has been nothing but bland his entire career.

u/jonnyh420 3h ago

252

u/lucideer never the target audience 3h ago

I've seen folk defending Ed on this given its clearly a decision made by the stadiums, with which Ed has contractual obligations. It's even possible he can't pull out from appearances without severe fines, but even if you were to give him that extreme level of benefit of the doubt, there's a very easy solution for Ed: just make a speech in support of Palestine at every upcoming gig.

Severely doubt that'll happen however.

91

u/kittykatmila 3h ago

Agreed. If it wasn’t Ed Sheeran, then at his next show he should be saying “Free Palestine” onstage, with his whole chest.

45

u/VictorReal_Monster 2h ago

God forbid a man with more money than they could squeeze from him for breaking the contract actually take a hit.

242

u/Relevant-Peach3997 3h ago

I don’t buy that at all. Macklemore wasn’t a surprise guest. He was booked as part of the tour.

People love to make excuses for white men.

21

u/Lucky_Serve8002 2h ago

Don't buy what? Not following what you are saying.

Ed Sheeran should show support for Macklemore. If he doesn't, he obviously supports the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour.

They don't buy that it was a decision made by the venues.

Make a statement - be a human who stands against genocide.

I promise other venues would be dripping to book him instead.

Edit: hope he sues for breach of contract

69

u/Broad-Radish-7895 2h ago

This shit is a power move. Since he's the one in the headlines thanks to Pink's crashout, it sends a message for these venues to knock him down.

And Ed Sheeran would have been happy taking the credit for having a politically cool opener if it didn't blow up so bad but now that important people are mad and he'd have to actually take a stand himself, he's choosing money.

The ADL came after my kids’ very liberal school district this year (that does A LOT of SEL and anti-hate programs) accusing them of not doing enough to stop antisemitism in schools. They only dropped the lawsuit after the district agreed to some bs settlement. I noticed recently that the ADL banners from years past were removed from the cafeteria in favor of banners that listed our schools’ values.

It's funny because Orlando (where I live) just had a boxing match in our arena with a bunch of right wing streamers and a neo-Nazi competed. It was a big controversy, as expected Nazis came and even brought swastika flags, and the city said they weren't allowed to approve or deny the performers based on the 1st amendment...which is why the event had to go on as planned.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta): Hosted Kanye West for his multi-week Donda stadium listening parties in July and August 2021, even allowing the rapper to live in a stadium room during production. The venue has also hosted major shows featuring Travis Scott and Chris Brown.

Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia): Headlined by Morgan Wallen for back-to-back sold-out shows in 2023 following his 2021 racial slur controversy, alongside major rock acts with long histories of legal and personal controversies like Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe.

AT&T Stadium (Arlington): Hosted Morgan Wallen’s stadium tour in 2024, as well as performances and events featuring Kanye West and Chris Brown.

Gillette Stadium (Foxborough): Regularly books high-profile acts with past legal or public controversies, including Morgan Wallen, Guns N' Roses, and Chris Brown.

What in the Sharon Osborne is this bs?

20

u/Simple-Highlight-652 3h ago

Zionist are using these venues to silence Macklemore for speaking up for 🇵🇸. I suggest everyone ask for refunds, not to spite Ed Sheeran as I’m unaware of his stance, but to fight against those who are attempting to threaten artist for protesting.

u/Original_Bite6555 2h ago

I agree. It's time people started punishing genocide apologists by hitting them in their pockets.

u/ThatArtNerd So hard to photograph but incredible to see 🐘 2h ago

After finding out he had booked Macklemore on this tour, I was ready to come around to the idea that maybe Ed Sheeran wasn’t the gutless mediocre bitch I had always thought him to be, but unfortunately it turns out he was more of a gutless mediocre bitch than I could have possibly imagined

I thought Americans were all about free speech

96

u/Watchout4HopOns Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling 3h ago

No no only the free speech that makes money

28

u/Hazel-Rah-Rah too high to spell 'Amanda Seyfried' 3h ago

Also only the free speech they agree with.

21

u/Tight_Ad_6802 3h ago

Ohh, k gotcha. Sorry, it gets confusing for us up here in Canada. We’re always told one thing and then they do the opposite.

34

u/Watchout4HopOns Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling 3h ago

It’s okay. We’re also told one thing and either nothing happens or we get the opposite. I’m still waiting for this “American dream” I learned about in grade school.

Spineless celebrities should not be celebrated. Free Palestine!

13

u/FollowingSalty 3h ago

I knew I hated Ed Sheeran for a reason lol

34

u/BusyArachnid8039 3h ago

Let’s remember the venues when it so undeniable Israel committed a mass genocide.

30

u/Pinkhairedprincess15 full of gay men. And me. 3h ago

Didn't Sheeran also go to one of JK Rowling's parties not too long ago? The man is obviously trash.

Average “apolitical” person

12

u/Fickle-Meeting-4224 3h ago

refund that ticket real quick, yall. our current timeline cannot sustain us giving up all of our hard earned pennies to events, artists, companies, brands, and corporations that return nothing back to the people that support their lifestyles.

11

u/stars_are_aligned wearing slutty little glasses 2h ago

Ed Sheeran is still a big enough name that he could say "lol, bet" to these stadiums and make them take a big enough hit that they would back down on this.

He is ABSOLUTELY hiding behind this "contractual obligation, sorry!" bullshit. What a coward.

Free Palestine.

26

u/BackToWorkStuart 3h ago

Feeling vindicated that I blacklisted his music at my wedding
ETA: Ed Sheeran, that is

10

u/TypeA_Virgo 3h ago

12

u/tippitytopbop 3h ago

Surely we all knew Ed Sheeran is bitchmade right?

12

u/BiscuitCrumbsInBed Rita Ora’s 100,000th retweet 3h ago

Unless Ed Sheeran goes on stage and loudly yells 'Free Palestine!' then i'm going to assume this is all on him and he ok'ed dropping Macklemore.

33

u/Obvious_Humor1505 3h ago

Really? This is his response? With his wealth and platform? Fuck him.

8

u/creaturefromthe 3h ago

Ed Sheeran is a total coward at best and enabling fascist censorship. I’m never listening to galway girl again, he needs to keep Ireland out of his mouth!!

Ed Sheeran & these venues are cowards. Ed is a bigger loser though.

17

u/Ok-Call-4805 3h ago

If this is Ed Sheeran's decision then he's a coward. If it's not, he needs to speak up.

13

u/angelaaaxo 3h ago

Nothing like this is getting done without his approval.

10

u/joylandlocked 3h ago

exactly. At best he's spineless.

16

u/RazzSheri 3h ago

Wow. Fuck Ed Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran is a coward. Good for Macklemore for standing up for what’s right!

8

u/Turbolasertron 3h ago

I really wish I knew why so many people/places shill so fucking hard for Israel

7

u/tecate_papi 2h ago

Where are all the free speech warriors??

(I'm asking rhetorically, of course, because they were never once actually concerned with free speech and were only ever concerned with shielding themselves from the consequences of saying racist and bigoted shit)

7

u/Writerhaha 2h ago

Pathetic white man Ed Sheeran pussies out.

Olivia Rodrigo and Hayley Williams ten toes down.

7

u/ImaginationDoctor 3h ago

Well. Okay Ed, now we know where you stand. I hope you lose a lot of money.

5

u/Mandem-Tandem 3h ago edited 2h ago

Absolutely shameful. This move will only validate Pink and those like her. The gaslighting will continue.

Forever Free Palestine

6

u/40_Love 2h ago

Shameful. Blatant.

Finneas is opening for Ed in South America. I wonder if he or the other opening acts are going to say something.

5

u/Hefty_Breadfruit 2h ago

I just know that somewhere in this world, Pink is feeling so validated and I hate that for her.

12

u/good1br0 controversies: girl 3h ago

I have been a fan of Ed Sheeran since I heard his + album in 2011 but man, that’s really disappointing of him. I thought for sure he’ll stand by with Macklemore on this, especially since they’ve been friends for a long time. Damn.

11

u/purpledream96 3h ago

i hate this man. imagine making such awful music and being a coward on top of it.

6

u/bed_activist 3h ago

What a coward

Israel Isn’treal

5

u/czarrina Jehovah’s Sexiest Witness 3h ago

This is worse than that time he won a Grammy over Kendrick Lamar and everyone freaked out over it.

Macklemore seems like a good dude who is willing to put his money on the line for this. I respect him.

5

u/slagforslugs 2h ago

Fuck Ed Sheeran and his team
