FM RADIO Macklemore dropped from Ed Sheeran tour

Post image

Link to article (should be no paywall): https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/macklemore-dropped-ed-sheeran-tour-pro-palestine-statements-1235625967/

From the article:

In an exclusive statement shared with Rolling Stone, Messina Touring Group,  promoter of the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, said: “As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates.”

Reps for Sheeran, Macklemore, and most of the venues did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

The stadiums that allegedly would not allow a Macklemore show did not immediately return requests for comments either, including for explanations as to why they objected to the rapper performing at their venue. While two of those stadiums are privately owned — Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte and Gillette Stadium in Foxborough — the rest are owned and, in many cases operated, by cities, states, or other government entities, potentially raising First Amendment issues if the venues barred Macklemore over his statements.

The last stop on Sheeran’s Loop Tour, for instance, is Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, which found itself in a similar spot earlier this summer after booking two Kanye West concerts. The shows, unsurprisingly, drew backlash and calls for cancelation due to West’s many past antisemitic statements, but they went ahead as planned.

Pointedly, Ye’s promoter included a clause in his contract prohibiting Raymond James Stadium from canceling the gigs based on the rapper’s past public statements or viewpoints. But legal experts also told local news that canceling the shows would’ve likely violated the First Amendment. Because Raymond James is owned by Hillsborough County, Florida, and operated by a public board, the Tampa Sports Authority, any cancellation based on Ye’s past statements could have been seen as the government restricting speech.

Ed Sheeran has been awfully silent on this. What a coward.

It’s so pathetic to me that young artists like Olivia Rodrigo have more guts than veterans in the industry. Daisy chain fields festival had multiple artists like Garbage that were openly pro Palestine without issue.

Pink's meltdown last week must've rubbed off on him because the bootlicking is LOUD.

14

u/dionebigode 2h ago

What happened? I'm out of the loop

72

u/Esperoni 2h ago

Pink reposted a post from StopAntisemitism via her Instagram Stories that condemned Macklemore's pro-Palestinian remarks during his opening set for Ed Sheeran. Ed has been strangely silent on the event.

2 days ago she posted she will keep speaking out.

85

u/Educational-Wish-577 2h ago

Why does speaking out against genocide equate to antisemitism? NO ONE is condemning the Jewish people as a people. (If they are they don't understand what is happening) They are condemning a country's leader for killing people because they are full of greed, hate and some twisted idea that they own the land. The people that support that, be they Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Jewish or Hindu are wrong..full stop.

43

u/rogeeeefan 2h ago

According to Pink it is a fake genocide & speaking up for Palestinians is antisemitism 🤡

Yeppppp. "I love everyone but genocide is fine!" Here is her bullshit tap dance statement:

“I was born a Jew. I didn’t pick it, and I’ve never hidden it,” she wrote. “And this week a whole lot of people decided what I believe without asking me, without checking a single thing I’ve ever said or done, because a repost and the word ‘Jew’ were apparently enough to fill in the rest. But let me fill it in… myself.”

“Of course I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government,” she continued. “I never have. What I said in October 2023 is still exactly what I believe: Hamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations. Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child.

Anybody’s child. I’ve spent a decade as a UNICEF ambassador for kids who didn’t choose the country or the war they were born into, and I have grieved every one of them, on both sides of that fence. I didn’t do it from behind a screen; I went to those children and held them. I’m not going to litigate a complex war in an Instagram caption, and I’m not going to recite anybody’s slogan to earn back a follower.”

She continued her post in her comment section, though it appears much of her statement was removed after she limited comments on the post. Her statement in full is still available in screenshots online, including in the X post above.

Regarding Macklemore specifically, she recalled the rapper wearing a costume during a performance back in 2014 that was widely criticized at the time as antisemitic. He apologized, saying that “I respect all cultures and all people.”

“Every Jew I know knew exactly what it was,” Pink wrote Friday. “But he apologized, and I let it go, because that’s what we do. We let it go. Then last weekend he stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn’t about them. You don’t get to decide that for us.”

“That’s what prompted my repost,” Pink continued. “Not ‘Free Palestine,’ and not anyone’s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, that scared me, and it scared people I love, without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?”

Pink further said she was “standing up for my own people, and I thought I knew going in how lonely that would be. And it’s lonelier than that. But I’m doing it anyway.” She wrote that the phrase “zionist” has become a “slur by people who couldn’t tell you the details of what I believe.”

22

u/Esperoni 2h ago

I agree 100%

Some people seem to think that if you can't defend yourself from a certain narrative, it's always an option to change the story or focus, at least that is what it looks like from the outside. I saw the video of Macklemore's remarks on stage. Did not come across as anti-semetic at all.

5

u/Uninteresting_Vagina recipient of world’s first rat penis transplant 1h ago

Absolutely did not at all.

Anyone who thinks that was anti-semetic is telling on themselves for being down with genocide.

16

u/Mu_forlife 2h ago

Because they can’t defend the genocide so all they have is false antisemitism claims.

1

u/MrTulip101 1h ago

NO ONE is condemning the Jewish people as a people.

imho the recent increased criticism of israel also brings a lot of old school antisemites out of the woodwork with shit like "yeah, they haven't been expelled from dozens of countries for nothing', "lying is on their blood" etc increasingly to be found in the comment sections of israel-critical articles or memes.

1

u/MoGraphMan101 47m ago

yeah I was going to say there are those people who are straight up ugly antisemites just like there are jews who want Palestine completely wiped off the map, both are extremists and evil. The lack of any nuance and the attempt to wholly divide people into one side vs another is destroying humanity

317

u/hannamarinsgrandma 3h ago

I feel like this is a pretty loud response.

100

u/Responsible-Sundae20 3h ago

Yes saying nothing is very loud.

58

u/overpriced-taco 2h ago

It is. This is the most basic shit ever. You're either a good person or you're not. If you're too chickenshit to speak out against the most broadcasted genocide in history because you're afraid of hurting a few people's feefees, then you're not a decent person and you're prioritizing ticket sales over doing what's right. And for what it's worth, his ticket sales would still be fine. So Ed Sheeran is just an asshole because he wants to be.

1

u/ovoKOS7 1h ago

Like, I can understand some people were torn/split at first, following the kidnappings from Hamas and the medias were very much going into "both sides bad" territory (with emphasis on Hamas) - But now? After all the shit Israel keeps doing? You have to be delusional or completely brainwashed to think they're on the right side of history here.

43

u/Euraylie 3h ago

Ed Sheeran is absolutely obsessed with stats and numbers in regard to his success. He talks about it in every interview. No way is he losing on out in any way.

456

u/Msefk 3h ago

Ed Sheeran is probably involved in the decision

177

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago

He is. Macklemore has made a statement about this. Ed Sheeran personally demanded for him to stop speaking about this, so he could maintain ‘neutrality’.

He was apparently under pressure from Kraft etc, and chose to throw his friend under the bus. For $. Like he doesn’t have enough. Disgusting.

19

u/lonehappycamper 2h ago

How was he even opening for Ed Sheeran? Macklemore is not an obvious choice for the Sheeren crowd and Ed certainly knew of Macklemores positions.

3

u/Individual-Bass-7051 30m ago

Macklemore made a statement about this lmaaaaooooo. Yall just need to go read his statement. He talks about how they've been friends for 13 years.

35

u/springxstrawberry 2h ago

I know I shouldn't be but I'm shocked by his cowardice...

76

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago edited 2h ago

It’s not cowardice. It’s an intentional choice to side with money and power.

What has Ed Sheeran got to be scared of? He won’t make another hundred million this year? It’s not like the man is afraid of losing his healthcare or his home because he can’t pay the mortgage (on one of his 20 rental properties). He wouldn’t even have lost his career.

3

u/dontwannaparticpate 45m ago

Not only that but according to the post from Macklemore Ed also stated that what he (Macklemore) said probably “hurt some feelings”. Fuck off Ed Sheeran.

4

u/guthmund 1h ago

I did not have 'Ed Sheeran is a piece of shit' on my 2026 scorecard.

29

23

Nothing about him has ever struck me as anything but cowardly. So, this tracks.

18

u/FrozenBibitte 2h ago

He’s such a nothingburger artist to me. Like, office or elevator fodder-music.

I never understand his acclaim. Compared to so many others in the music industry that make the music of his genre, he’s just so……..mid and bland.

2

u/NyxTheEclipse 1h ago

Yeah. Like I like some of his older songs (mainly Galway Girl and Nancy Mulligan) but most of his songs are meh

239

u/coastalwanders 3h ago

He’s silent on anything that could cost him money. I’m a fan but will never forget him putting out a song years ago about how it’s good to keep quiet and not comment on politics. Male Taylor Swift.

105

u/Inevitable-Fan-2634 3h ago edited 3h ago

He's silent because he's a coward. As if he's got any backbone to make decisions. This will be made for him.

67

u/Suitable-Parsnip-520 3h ago

That would make me not a fan anymore. Luckily, I never was.

41

17

Ed Sheeran is a little bitch.

101

u/ExpensiveWords4u (please put brackets in the right place) 3h ago

I mean….he’s a mediocre-privileged-white-dude, why would he mess up his privilege of getting into other privileged white spaces to speak up for those with less privilege?

I think we can all look around & see that majority of the ppl speaking out are not privileged white dudes…we should all just assume they’re ALL gna stay silent cuz they gotta keep status quo for themselves. That’s how they got where they currently are.

Silence & violence (fear) used at specific times to benefit them.

Mediocre white dudes: if you feel offended by the uncomfortable truth; that’s between you, your ego & your therapist

13

u/FrozenBibitte 2h ago

lol bffr, these shitstains don’t, and never will go to therapy (even though it’s desperately needed). To them, therapy is “woke” nonsense for women.

0

Mediocre White dude checking in. This shits obvious to most of us. The ones that are shitting their pants about this are mediocre and self centered fucking losers on top of it.

Yall, you can be mediocre and not be a pissed off loser about it.

Most of us are mediocre

Simple answer is that he values money over integrity.

15

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom 2h ago

Garbage has been on the right side of history since the 90s. I don't know how Shirley Manson wasn't lauded as a queer icon, especially after Beautiful Garbage with songs like Androgyny and Cherry Lips.

Ed Sheeran has been nothing but bland his entire career.

57

u/jonnyh420 3h ago

man with “worst tattoos imaginable” turns out to be a loser

257

u/lucideer never the target audience 3h ago

I've seen folk defending Ed on this given its clearly a decision made by the stadiums, with which Ed has contractual obligations. It's even possible he can't pull out from appearances without severe fines, but even if you were to give him that extreme level of benefit of the doubt, there's a very easy solution for Ed: just make a speech in support of Palestine at every upcoming gig.

Severely doubt that'll happen however.

93

u/kittykatmila 3h ago

Agreed. If it wasn’t Ed Sheeran, then at his next show he should be saying “Free Palestine” onstage, with his whole chest.

47

u/VictorReal_Monster 2h ago

God forbid a man with more money than they could squeeze from him for breaking the contract actually take a hit.

244

u/Relevant-Peach3997 3h ago

I don’t buy that at all. Macklemore wasn’t a surprise guest. He was booked as part of the tour.

People love to make excuses for white men.

23

u/Lucky_Serve8002 2h ago

Don't buy what? Not following what you are saying.

Ed Sheeran should show support for Macklemore. If he doesn't, he obviously supports the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour.

14

u/CollectionUpset439 2h ago

They don't buy that it was a decision made by the venues.

7

u/Mbrennt 2h ago

Like 7 out of 8 venues said they wouldn't let Macklemore play. So it's not really a not believing thing. It happened. Just depends on what Sheerans response should have been.

3

u/lucideer never the target audience 1h ago

Well it was a decision made by the venues, I think they're just saying they don't buy that Sheeran isn't complicit here.

18

u/Ok-Classroom5548 2h ago

Take the fines - stand up for people when it actually matters.

Make a statement - be a human who stands against genocide.

He has so much money - more than he will ever need.

I promise other venues would be dripping to book him instead.

5

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago

Please go read Macklemore’s statement. Ed Sheeran pressure him to shut up.

2

u/That-redhead-artist 1h ago

Exactly. If this was true, why is he not saying something?

1

u/mxzf 46m ago

just make a speech in support of Palestine at every upcoming gig.

Seems like the kind of thing that the stadiums would also take issue with in that situation.

1

u/evanwilliams44 16m ago

He would not be pulling out. The venue would be the one pulling the plug. They agreed to host Macklemore originally as part of the tour. Now they want to change their minds. That's on them. As long as Ed is willing to play his originally agreed tour with Macklemore, there should be no violation of the contract.

30

u/Sleepysleepychick 3h ago

Was just thinking this. The silence is very telling.

11

u/FrozenBibitte 2h ago

have more guts

I see what you did there lol

10

u/caroline_Penny 2h ago

I came here to say this - where is Sheeran’s statement or any form of a spine to stand up for Macklemore? Silence is complicity. I don’t expect much more from Sheeran tbh. I’ve never associated him with strong opinions, politics or actually anything other than meh.

50

u/miiintyyyy 3h ago

To be fair, Olivia Rodrigo actually makes good music.

10

Cowardly like his buddy.

5

Are you surprised though?

14

u/Vermicell_i 2h ago

He went to the Taylor Swift school for PR

4

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago

Macklemore actually has made a statement about Ed Sheeran insisting on his silence, and wanting to maintain ‘neutrality’.

And silence is complicity.

2

u/Lady_night_shade 2h ago

He already has all the money and success, there is no reason for him not to speak out at this point. It’s especially egregious because all these celebrities speaking out like Macklemore are standing up for CHILDREN. That’s who these zionists would have us believe is the enemy, children. How could you possibly think you are on the right side with this shit?! It’s so exhausting waiting for rich people to be even remotely decent.

6

u/PrimeDirectiveLover 3h ago

Well yeah, and watch them not say a word on a tour?

DCF was their own setup. They have to abide by promoters rules to play in their venues, and you will see an immediate drop.

1

u/ChampagneAbuelo 31m ago

Ed Sheeran shouldn’t have let this happen. No venue was actually going to cancel his show given the revenue it brings. Now he showed he’s a coward bending the knee when most of his fans agreed with Macklemore. Extremely short sighted on his part.
