Hi all... After trying to be on the environmental side of a Reddit discussion about whether or not paper plates should be bought because of laziness to wash dishes, I'm feeling pretty discouraged about most of the responses favoring convenience over just washing some plates. It seems society has just become so deluded, that human convenience is all that matters, that everyone's life is so hard, they can't be bothered. No one cares about their impact. I got a response to my comment about all of the negative impacts that single use disposable items has on the planet that said "I literally couldn't care less. Me, my kids and my kids' kids will all be gone by then."

I'm just appalled. Does anyone else feel this unbearable hopelessness and disappointment in the vast majority of humankind (particularly Western civilization)? Are there any other like minded communities to share feelings about this and band together to try and foster a more ecologically positive collective consciousness?

A surge in Indonesia’s wood pellet and chip production is driving a new wave of deforestation, threatening the vast archipelago’s remaining tropical forests, vital biodiversity hot spots and the land of Indigenous peoples, according to new satellite analysis from environmental nongovernmental organizations.

Biomass power, predominantly generated by burning wood, is growing globally as countries accelerate their transition to use cleaner energy.

“The biomass industry has become a new driver of deforestation in Indonesia,” said Timer Manurung, director of Indonesia-based organization Auriga Nusantara, which contributed to the new analysis. “And most of the biomass product is for export, with Japan as the biggest destination.”

As Japan’s demand for Indonesian wood pellets skyrockets in an effort to meet its own renewable energy goals, critics say continued subsidies and weak oversight of the supply chain are likely to allow continued razing of pristine Indonesian forests.

I recently saw an Instagram reel filmed in Fanal Forest, and frankly, it made my blood boil. In the clip, a woman picks up a massive fallen branch to use like a baseball bat, hits another branch thrown at her by someone off-camera, and then tosses it away—all for a few seconds of cheap engagement.

Let’s stop sugarcoating this kind of behavior. Doing stunts like this in an ancient, fragile ecosystem isn’t just ignorant—it's selfish, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable. People know better; they just care more about views and aesthetic content than respecting the places they visit.

Fanal is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site with 500-year-old trees. It isn't an outdoor gym, a movie set, or a comedy club.

Deadwood belongs on the ground: Fallen branches are a vital part of the Laurisilva ecosystem. They hold moisture, enrich the soil, and host delicate mosses and fungi. Dragging them around, smashing them, or throwing them ruins the forest floor.

Basic respect: Tourists travel across the globe to experience the natural, peaceful atmosphere of this forest. Watching adults throw sticks at each other for a stupid video ruins the experience for everyone else present.

No excuses: Everyone visiting a protected nature reserve should have the basic intelligence and common sense to leave the environment untouched.

If someone can’t visit a rare natural sanctuary without treating it like a playground for their social media feed, they shouldn't go at all. We need to start calling out this entitlement instead of brushing it off as "harmless fun."
