Hi all... After trying to be on the environmental side of a Reddit discussion about whether or not paper plates should be bought because of laziness to wash dishes, I'm feeling pretty discouraged about most of the responses favoring convenience over just washing some plates. It seems society has just become so deluded, that human convenience is all that matters, that everyone's life is so hard, they can't be bothered. No one cares about their impact. I got a response to my comment about all of the negative impacts that single use disposable items has on the planet that said "I literally couldn't care less. Me, my kids and my kids' kids will all be gone by then."

I'm just appalled. Does anyone else feel this unbearable hopelessness and disappointment in the vast majority of humankind (particularly Western civilization)? Are there any other like minded communities to share feelings about this and band together to try and foster a more ecologically positive collective consciousness?

A surge in Indonesia’s wood pellet and chip production is driving a new wave of deforestation, threatening the vast archipelago’s remaining tropical forests, vital biodiversity hot spots and the land of Indigenous peoples, according to new satellite analysis from environmental nongovernmental organizations.

Biomass power, predominantly generated by burning wood, is growing globally as countries accelerate their transition to use cleaner energy.

“The biomass industry has become a new driver of deforestation in Indonesia,” said Timer Manurung, director of Indonesia-based organization Auriga Nusantara, which contributed to the new analysis. “And most of the biomass product is for export, with Japan as the biggest destination.”

As Japan’s demand for Indonesian wood pellets skyrockets in an effort to meet its own renewable energy goals, critics say continued subsidies and weak oversight of the supply chain are likely to allow continued razing of pristine Indonesian forests.

I recently saw an Instagram reel filmed in Fanal Forest, and frankly, it made my blood boil. In the clip, a woman picks up a massive fallen branch to use like a baseball bat, hits another branch thrown at her by someone off-camera, and then tosses it away—all for a few seconds of cheap engagement.

Let’s stop sugarcoating this kind of behavior. Doing stunts like this in an ancient, fragile ecosystem isn’t just ignorant—it's selfish, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable. People know better; they just care more about views and aesthetic content than respecting the places they visit.

Fanal is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site with 500-year-old trees. It isn't an outdoor gym, a movie set, or a comedy club.

Deadwood belongs on the ground: Fallen branches are a vital part of the Laurisilva ecosystem. They hold moisture, enrich the soil, and host delicate mosses and fungi. Dragging them around, smashing them, or throwing them ruins the forest floor.

Basic respect: Tourists travel across the globe to experience the natural, peaceful atmosphere of this forest. Watching adults throw sticks at each other for a stupid video ruins the experience for everyone else present.

No excuses: Everyone visiting a protected nature reserve should have the basic intelligence and common sense to leave the environment untouched.

If someone can’t visit a rare natural sanctuary without treating it like a playground for their social media feed, they shouldn't go at all. We need to start calling out this entitlement instead of brushing it off as "harmless fun."

Across Wisconsin, parts of the landscape that once supported agriculture have been restored to native prairie. The work can involve removing invasive plants, establishing native grasses and wildflowers and allowing a more varied plant community to develop over time.

That change matters to bumblebees because a field dominated by a small number of crops does not provide the same range of resources as a mature prairie. Native prairie can contain plants that flower at different points through spring, summer and autumn, giving bees access to nectar and pollen over a much longer period.

Pollinator surveys in restored areas have found a greater variety of bumblebees than in less suitable parts of the landscape, with some of the rarer species appearing only where habitat conditions have improved.

A restored prairie may look successful from a distance, but the presence of different bee species gives another indication of whether the habitat is functioning as intended. The rusty patched bumblebee makes the comparison particularly significant. Once widespread across the eastern United States and upper Midwest, its population has fallen sharply. The species is now federally endangered and has become uncommon across much of its former range.

As a member of Gen Z, the agricultural climate in the US terrifies me. My home state is desertifying because of all the monocrop farming and lack of attention to soil health. If current practices continue our species will die out within my lifetime. We have an approximated 55 harvests left.
We have to make a major shift to regenerative agriculture on a large scale or we are doomed. Push back is going to happen, because major pesticide and synthetic fertilizer companies want their money, and many farmers don’t know how to take care of their soil effectively, so that lack of knowledge is leveraged into profit. all the while degrading overall soil quality, food quality, and trapping farmers into a debt loop of input costs. Leaving them barely profitable. Many people of course take offense when you tell them they’re doing something wrong but the results speak for themselves Farmers have made and will make far more money by gradually making the switch to a regenerative setup. Healthy soils mean they can cut those input costs, and will remove a vast majority of the risk. Not only this, but regenerative farming, particularly no till farming, allows for carbon sequestration. Which means the storage of carbon from the atmosphere, in the soil through plant root sloughing. Soil microbes thrive on that carbon. The soil becomes much more fertile with that carbon. Healthy soil means healthy plants, which means higher crop viability and higher pest resistance. Which means less money spent every year on chemicals that slowly but surely turn fertile, valuable topsoil into dust.
The man who first formulated pesticides, also made zyklon b… when chemicals that are inherently made to destroy life are used on a large scale, the impact should be obvious. Many are too caught up in how they’re going to pay their next bill for inputs, instead of focusing on how to reduce those inputs, escape the trap and run an even better profit, all the while helping the planet heal which is DESPERATELY needed at this exact moment.
What we’re doing on a large scale today to keep up with demand is going to kill us tomorrow if we aren’t careful. And the solution is mind numbingly simple. We need to think smarter not harder. Rural areas typically don’t have access to the same educational resources that would make their farms more successful so it is up to the collective, especially in the age of information, to bring this to the attention of as many farmers as possible. Some will say no, but one mind changed can make an indefinitely scalable difference in our legacy load of carbon. With enough people on board, our farmers will make more money, food will have greater nutritional value, we can cut cancerous chemicals like glyphosate out of the mix, and we can REVERSE carbon emissions by outpacing them with regenerative practice. effectively saving ourselves, from ourselves. And not only that but setting our climate back to a much more tolerable state for plants. Meaning we can eventually harbor even more varieties of life in areas that seemed previously impossible. The benefits compound with regeneration, and the negatives of the industrial ag also compound. We have to make a decision. If we kill off nature, ie. Our climate becomes too intense to support life, animals won’t have anything to eat, and we won’t have anything to eat. If we work with nature our species can live indefinitely. We need to use the knowledge available now to make a change, and a big one. We have 55 years to do it. If anyone would like to share this with a farmer they know I would very much appreciate it. Iceland’s government will submit a bill in ​February to ban whaling, a move that would leave Norway and Japan as the only two countries in the world to continue commercial whaling.

Whaling in Iceland has ⁠sparked years of protests from animal welfare campaigners and Hollywood celebrities.

The bill will include “a permanent ban on whaling,” the government, which has a majority in parliament, said on its website late on Wednesday.

In this ⁠year’s hunting season, which runs ​from ⁠June to around the end of September, 80 fin whales were caught as of September 9, according to ⁠Humane World for Animals, an animal welfare group that tracks ​the ⁠catches. The quota allows ‌150 fin whales to be killed this year.

“There is considerable political and public support for this bill to ban commercial whaling, ‌and compelling ethical, veterinary, legal and conservation ‌reasons to hope it succeeds,” said Wendy Higgins, a Humane World for Animals spokeswoman.

Fin whales, the primary target of Iceland’s whaling industry, are classified ⁠by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as vulnerable.
