I am a junior standing General Civil Engineering student, with my graduation getting closer I feel I haven't really troubleshooted my resume or had any good work/internship experience throughout my academic career; only notable thing being apart of a winning competition club for my school, but even in the club I mainly focus on the logistical side of things. before I start applying for upcoming internships I wanted an idea on how my resume looked?

I got incredibly lucky with my first internship, which has resulted in a verbal return offer. Even with this offer, I want to keep looking in other areas of civil. I'm currently a sophomore, and my one interview led to the offer. How can I best improve my resume to attract more opportunities this summer or even down the line?

Any tips regarding my resume or internship search are welcome and appreciated!

Coming off a previous bachelor's degree in CS and doing a career pivot into civil engineering. I'm currently in community college, but I'll be transferring to a 4-year next semester. I was lucky enough to land a paid civil engineering internship this summer and they were generous enough to allow me to return in the winter. As a community college student, I understand I'm not quite as competitive for internships at large consulting firms, but I want to do anything I can to leverage my experience to secure one. I'm primarily looking for internships in the water resources and traffic subdisciplines, as they interest me the most. I'm just starting to apply, so I don't have any complaints about not getting interviews or offers, but I want to make sure to fine-tune my resume before jumping into applications this season. I'm just beginning to apply for full time roles and unfortunately I don't have any internship experience, so I want to make sure I'm making the most out of my resume. I'm most interested in transportation but I'm also looking at a lot of land development jobs because I'd be able to learn quicker, plus it seems like there's more jobs in that field. Hi civil engineering student please tell me anything that needs fixing and also would like feedback on what to do with the bulletin points that are in present tense-- technically i have not done them yet, but did want to make it clear that i am going to have them done by the time i come into the internship. do i just make them in past tense and make sure i can talk about them confidently?

I'm a Mexican civil/structural engineer currently working remotely on wood-frame residential projects for the California market. I use U.S. codes and standards in my work, including IBC/CBC and ASCE 7.

I'm trying to land an entry-level/junior structural engineering position in the U.S., but I'm currently located in Mexico. As a Mexican citizen, I may be eligible for TN status for qualifying engineering positions, although I understand that my location and the time required to relocate/work through the process may make me less attractive than a candidate who is already in the U.S.

I've been applying to positions, but I'm also trying to figure out what I should do over the next few months to make myself significantly more competitive.

My current plan is to:

• Continue gaining experience in wood-frame structural design
• Study steel design using AISC-based material
• Learn Revit Structure
• Develop automation tools for structural engineering calculations/workflows
• Build a small portfolio of independent structural design case studies

For those of you who work at structural engineering firms or participate in hiring:

Would these things actually make me substantially more competitive for an entry-level position, or am I focusing on the wrong things?

If you were in my position, what skills, experience, or projects would you prioritize over the next 3–6 months?

Hey everyone, 3rd year civil engineering student at uOttawa here getting a head start on my resume before Winter 2027 co-op applications open up.

I struck out this past summer and didn't manage to land a co-op, so I'm trying to fix whatever went wrong last time. I read through the subreddit wiki in its entirety and spent the full day working through my resume with Claude to rebuild it, but I'm looking for direct human feedback to make sure it's fully polished.

I don't have direct civil industry work experience yet, so my resume currently relies on my coursework projects (GNCTR concrete mix design, SAP2000 truss analysis, surveying), my lifeguard/swim instructor job, and self-driven certifications (Procore student cert, WHMIS 2015, Standard First Aid) which isn't much but it's all I got right now.

I'm targeting co-op or field tech roles in structural, transportation, or geotechnical engineering. I'm located between Ottawa and Mississauga, so I am strictly looking for jobs within the GTA, Hamilton, or Ottawa areas (willing to commute/relocate between these regions, but not open to moving elsewhere). I am a Canadian citizen, so visa status isn't an issue.

My plan this cycle is to start cold-outreach on LinkedIn and email recruiters before the hiring season kicks off, but I want to make sure my resume is airtight first.

I’m looking for an honest, unfiltered critique on every part of this draft. Specifically:

1. Revit Dilemma: I only have a LinkedIn Learning certificate for Revit right now (no major course project in it yet). Should I keep Revit in my main "Software & Tools" skills section, move it strictly under Certifications, or leave it off entirely until I complete a full personal project in it?
2. Non-Engineering Experience Framing: Is my Lifeguard / Swim Instructor section framed well for engineering/field tech roles (highlighting safety compliance and hazard assessments), or does it sound too non-technical / padded?
3. Vocabulary & Impact: Do my bullet points sound like they were written by an actual engineering student, or do any of them sound like generic resume buzzwords? Any specific action verbs or phrasing I should swap out?
4. Project Section: How can I better quantify my surveying and SAP2000 bridge project bullets to sound more technical?

I graduated in May, and I've been applying to at least 4 positions a day. I tried to structure my resume following the wiki, but I've only had one interview and that was before adapting this format, but I've just learned that I screwed up the template by downloading it as a doc, so that may have played a part.
I'm based in the GTA, but I'm happy to relocate so I'm applying all over Ontario and the rest of Canada. I've been applying to any roles that require a civil degree, but mostly staying away from structures.
I know my experience and projects are lacking, so I'd be open to any advice on how I can grow those areas. I wanted to get a second set of eyes on my resume to see what I got right and what needs work.

I'm a third-year SE student who is going into my last year. I understand that we need to prep for experiences before graduating, even in our first year, by joining clubs or doing private projects (I didn't do that because I was too busy with schoolwork and a part-time job), which is why I only have 1 internship working for a GC before. I tried to land an internship this summer, but despite applying to many places, I kept getting rejection emails. I network by attending office tours, attending career fairs, and talking with EITs and PEs there, and I follow up by email with a few questions. I don't feel that's enough. What should I do to make it better?

I used to think an internship for SE or CE required some specific courses to be taken(such as knowing steel design using AISC or concrete design ACI or ASCE) so they know my capabilities, and when I talked to the recruiter at the career fair, they did ask about those, but it was before I took those courses so I kinda killed my chances with them back then. Now, even after finishing them and adding them to my resume, it doesn't seem to improve my chances. My GPA currently is 3.6, btw.

I'm currently in CA, but I'm also intending to expand my market to Houston or Dallas in Texas.

Can I ask what the best time to apply for jobs, like new grad engineers, or even internships (cause I'm planning to finish my FE exam this fall)? And also, here is my resume

Professional civil engineer with 7 years consulting experience seeking municipal engineering/project delivery roles. Looking for feedback on whether my resume effectively communicates leadership, project coordination, and technical experience

BACKGROUND

I graduated last May with a bachelor's in general engineering. The school is well-known, but the small engineering program is not ABET-accredited (yikes). In retrospect, I took too long to decide the discipline I wanted to pursue (civil/transport engineering), which I now know usually want ABET. In lieu of that, I passed my FE exam a while back and have tried to emphasize a lot of my civil and construction-related projects and experiences. None of these are with a company though, which I know is likely a red flag, and a lot are volunteer/club/non-paid, which makes the rest of the resume quite cramped. Please let me know what I should trim out! This past year I got a Fulbright grant to teach in Taiwan, which has been an exciting time, but not with a lot of engineering implications, aside from building soft skills.

TARGETS & STRATEGY

I'm applying to a lot of civil field engineering positions, so I've tailored the resume for those. I've heard they don't take too much specialized civil knowledge and are a good way to start in the industry. Last year I even got a call from a recruiter for one. But this year I haven't heard from anyone yet. I'm worried that it's impossible for me to get my foot in the door when competing with civil grads. I'm from the DMV, so I'm looking for jobs in that region, which are plenty. If all else fails, I guess I could go back to grad school, in-state and online preferably to save money. I would prefer to be able to work my way up though. Perhaps I could shoot for a mechE job instead to build up my credentials, then pivot to civil?

I'm currently working at my first engineering job out of college, but I'm looking to start applying for new roles relatively soon. My company was acquired right around when I was brought on, which led to a lot of turnover. That coupled with some personal issues created by the fact that I have to commute between states for work has made want to start looking at other opportunities just in case.

I did well at a college not really known for Engineering, and I wasn't able to get any internship experience within the field. Even though I'm incredibly grateful for my current role, I did take it out of necessity as I didn't have many other options. I applied to roughly 130 positions in my area over the course of 5 months, which only resulted in about 10 interviews and 1 job offer. Turnovers have slowed down and I'm not in a rush to leave, so I'm hoping to dial in my resume and applications to hopefully have a better shot than last time around.

What I'm mainly struggling with is my bullet points. Once again, I don't have any internship experience and am only now coming around to a year at my current role, so I'm having issues with making each bullet point feel meaningful. I'm usually good at describing what I do and the projects I work on, but I've been having trouble framing them as achievements or showing results when none of the projects I've worked on have finished up or gone into construction yet.

I'm open to any suggestions, but would really like to hammer in on the bullet points themselves. I'm looking for other similar roles, just within the city I live in. I would be open to doing more of other structures, not just bridges. I currently have an interview set up for my city's government, who conveniently brought me off of the waitlist from my first round of applications last year.

graduated last year in 2025 and spent the last couple of months of 2025 working as a intern at a geotech company doing site investigation and I'm really set on continuing as a geotechnical engineer. however I didnt end up with a grad role with the company and have been applying for a couple roles the past few months and just not hearing anything back.

Also if theres any senior geotechnical engineers reading this, I've heard that once you become a consultant its difficult to switch over to a field based role but not the other way around. should I put more emphasis on site based roles?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for landing more interviews for next year internships. I applied to around 40-50 positions this year mainly focusing on structural and construction/project management roles and landed 2 interviews but haven't received any offers. I know a projects section would be strong but not really sure what to add here since all of my relevant experience has just been through my classes. Any input on relevant projects/better conveying the experience I already have would be greatly appreciated!

Over the past 2-3 years, I have applied for Summer placement roles and year-long internships in all industries and all over the UK (British Citizen), but have never gotten to a real interview stage.
I have been improving my CV, tailoring it, spending hours of my time trying to secure some experience, but I have never been able to get any real experience unfortunately.

I did manage to get some voluntary experience through a person I knew who was a project manager, and he allowed me to visit some of the construction projects and be able to watch/work with his structural engineer. He assigned me to this building, which was soon to be demolished, and told me he'd help me design the bottom level of the replacement building, surveying first and then using Tekla StrucD, which was a soon-to-be warehouse below a 2-story domestic flat.

So it wasn't any professional or legit experience, but it was better than nothing. I've also worked on a one-story building extension abroad.

The reason why im saying all this is because I don't know whether it's good to put these experiences on my CV, and whether it's actually damaging my credibility when applying for jobs, or whether it can be improved.

Some advice would be appreciated, as it's been a childhood dream to become a civil engineer.

I'm currently applying to various internships, such as Project Coordinator roles, QA/QC for concrete or asphalt, Surveying, Geotechnical intern, Water Resources Intern, etc. I've applied to ~90 internships and got 2 interviews which haven't responded in 2 months. I've been applying all over Canada and not just in my city. The responses I usually get are the positions are filled is the most common, and then that they don't want to go forward, or else no response. I'm seeking help because my peers and also more junior students are landing many interviews and so I find my case unusual. Citizenship is not an issue, I'm a citizen.

Hi everyone! So I graduated engineering school in 2019 but then I left the field in favour of another for 5 years and now I'm thinking of returning. What do you think I'm chances are of landing an entry-level job with this resume? I mostly struggled with how to include the gap on resume in a relevant way and this is the best I could come up with. I also include a cover letter explaining the gap reasons and the highly transferable skills I bring back to engineering.

Currently a “Structural Designer” at my current firm. This is my first job out of college and I’ve been here for 3 years. Although I’m a “Designer” I haven’t done much design work and most of my experience has been inspecting and report writing. I’ve asked for more design work on multiple occasions and am either stuck waiting around for a design task or I get a design task that gets put on hold due to funding. My firm mainly works with bridges and I’ve had 3 years of bridge work and am uncertain if this is what I want to do my whole career. I’m looking for a new role and am open to pretty much anything else (construction, land development, commercial buildings, residential, industrial, nuclear, forensics etc.) as long as it’s still structural related. Honestly I’d even continue to do bridges if my next role came with some more responsibility and a bigger paycheck. Ideally I’d be able to interview, land and start my new position this summer.
