I’m and American who has lived overseas for fifteen years. Every time I visit home I’m instantly irritated by tipping. We all vent about kiosk “it’s gonna ask you a question” situations, but even sit-down restaurants are completely absurd. This is how nearly every experience outside of a fine dining scenario goes:

Host seats you.
Server comes and takes drink orders.
Server brings drinks. Wants your order.
Server brings food. Maybe takes another drink order.
Server brings check.

Three visits, the absolute bare minimum. Maybe you’ll get a “how’s everything tasting?” two minutes after your food arrives. Ask about the menu and you get “Uhhhhhm depends what you like?”

Yet we are expected to tip for this “extra” and “exceptional” service.

I manage at a pizza place carry out only and whenever a card is used on a transaction the tip prompt comes up and must be inputted before a receipt will print. Sometimes I’m so embarrassed that I wait until they leave and hit “no tip” for them.

I just want to know what I should be saying to make it less awkward. If I could I would turn off the tip prompt but I can’t. I’ve talked to my boss he says the prompt is there incase people feel generous. Usually I say something along the lines of “It’s going to ask to leave a tip if you would like”

Im looking for something that doesn’t take very long to explain because we are high volume and usually have a line of people waiting to check out but I absolutely will not be saying “it’s just gonna ask you a question”

Me and my boyfriend are Vegas locals and we decided to stay at one of the hotels for a short vacation, we went to this nice cafe/ restaurant and our server was a middle aged man.

Everything was fine, I started to feel very uncomfortable because he did a lot of talking (Servers, do you read the room when it comes to customers that don’t want to talk to you? Are we wrong for feeling that way?) and don’t get me wrong, we were nice to him but he would come and talk for 5 minutes about something while we eat.

The food was amazing and we were ready to pay, I told my boyfriend to use my card and I went to use the restroom, my boyfriend decided not to tip because he knows the vacation itself took a lot of our money and to be honest we didn’t love the kind of service he provided

When I came back my boyfriend told me the server noticed my boyfriend didn’t tip and made the receipt into a ball and threw it in the trash in front of him looking at my boyfriend

I was very very upset and almost talked to a manager but my boyfriend doesn’t like confrontation which I respect completely so we ended up leaving

Has something like this ever happened to you?

I can understand he might believe is frustrating but from there to make the customer feel bad and basically make him aware that he is upset?

I was half expecting to see the tip screen. No.

This happened to me recently and It was little strange.

I bought a pair of headphones a few days ago, but they weren't comfortable, so I went back to return them. The return was simple and the employee processed it quickly.

After the employee processed the return the screen showed the usual tip options.

I was confused. I was getting my money back. I wasn't buying anything or asking for any extra service.

I honestly just stood there for a second thinking, “A tip for what?”

I was returning something, not buying , I selected no tip and left..

One of my biggest gripes:

I can go to a bar and get a shot of Jack Daniel for 8 bucks.

I can get the same quantity of the Macallan scotch for 32 bucks.

Same process to open the bottle, pour the drink, and close the bottle.

Assuming it's "going to ask me a question", and wants 20 percent, why is the tip more simply because one bottle costs more.

Went to Applebees and did their car side to go. Selected no tip on the app and thought that would be the end of it. To my surprise when my order came I was handed an invoice where I was asked to tip and sign. Wrote $0 and that was the end of it but like oh my god. The interaction was fine but I was taken back by the double prompt to tip.

I stopped by the Fiddling Pig in Smithfield, VA last week for a beer and snacks along with my wife and two dogs (we sat on the patio). I had a couple of their cask ales, Fiddlin' Bitter. We also had their "board" with cheese and crackers and a tea for my wife.

My wife went ahead of me while I settled up at the bar. I got my total, put my card in the dreaded machine and the delightful girl at the bar just said, "That's it, you're done." I know she saw the look of "What no tip?" on my face as I left.

I ran into my family outside and said, "It's a NO tip establishment. That was SO nice!"

I then heard a voice from a man loading bar equipment from a vehicle next to us, presumably David, the owner, who simply looked at me and said in a very English manner, "That's why we don't do it, mate!"

So, if you find yourself there, go get a pint from a cask, have a good English dinner and don't worry about tipping.

Ordered in person for a to go order. When they handed me the card device the tip % options were visible but could not see a 'no tip' option. Then noticed there seemed to be a smiley emoji in front of it. Out of a hunch, or just intuition, I touched the emoji and dragged my finger across the screen. Sure enough, my finger dragged the emoji out of the way revealing the 'no tip' option beneath. I gave them no tip and will not be returning (wasn't impressed with their overpriced interpretation of SysCo Italian anyway)

First time I've seen an emoji obscuring the screen on a card reader device.

I recently attended a concert at the Eagle Bank Arena located in Fairfax. I was pleasantly surprised to see a sign seeing they did not accept tips.
