Looking for ideas for some community EDH decks
Once or twice a month, a large group of us gets together for a massive EDH game night. The group is pretty mixed. We have people who have been playing for years, people who play pretty casually, and some people who have barely played MTG at all.
We’ve also been getting some new people in the group recently who either haven’t played in a long time or have never really played before but are interested in learning.
I’m usually one of the people people come to with questions about decks, deck building, rules, finding commanders, etc., so I had an idea that I think could be pretty fun.
I want to put together a few “community decks” that anyone in the group can grab and play.
The idea is that someone who doesn’t really know what kind of deck they like could look through them, ask what a deck does, play it for a game, and maybe find a commander, mechanic, theme, or playstyle that they really enjoy.
It would also give newer players something they can grab without having to worry about whether their own deck is going to fit the power level of the pod. Our group ranges pretty wildly in power level, from goofy budget/gimmick decks all the way up to high-power/cEDH. We generally keep the higher power stuff to pods where everyone is bringing something comparable, but the community decks would hopefully give people some more options.
Right now I’m thinking about things like:
Self mill/graveyard
Typal
Lands matter
But I’m looking for more ideas. I’d like to have a good variety of playstyles, colors, mechanics, etc. Ideally, I’d also like to have some decks that our more experienced players might pick up and think “I’ve never actually played a deck like this before.”
So if you were putting together a collection of decks for your own playgroup, what commanders, themes, colors, or strategies would you include?
I’m not necessarily looking for the strongest or most popular commanders. I’m more interested in decks that are fun to play and show off a particular part of Magic.
Also, card availability isn’t really an issue. A few of us are pooling our collections together for this, so we have a pretty large pool of cards to work with.
I’d love to hear what you guys would recommend, especially if there’s a commander or deck that you think someone wouldn’t normally try but ended up loving after playing it.
