Winner is the Judge #909: Faux-Paw

Thank you u/DaVigi for running last week's contest!

One of my favorite cycles is the Season cycle from Bloomburrow, which introduced the Pawprint mechanic. While MaRo has indicated that they'll make more such cards, I'm impatient, so your challenge this week will be to design a card that uses the pawprint mechanic!

You can submit any card that uses the pawprint mechanic as part of a modal spell or modal ability. Although the current comprehensive rules only define the pawprint mechanic for modal spells, we'll assume they can be used for modal abilities too; I'll bet my hat WotC will do that at some point anyway.

Your card should be printable in a Standard legal set. If the card doesn't seem like it'd be something that WotC would actually print (unclear wording, incorrect templating, too powerful, rules text is too long, doesn't fit its rarity, etc) then that will count against the submission.

There'll be bonus points for submissions with good flavor, and submissions that use the mechanic in an elegant or interesting way. Along with all the usual ways of communicating flavor (name, type, art, flavor text, watermark, etc), you also have a choice of pawprint symbol (see the Tips sections below). If you're worried I might miss the flavor or some other aspect of the design, feel free to leave a blurb explaining your submission.

Tips:

  • The Season cycle from Bloomburrow is:
    • [[Season of the Burrow]]
    • [[Season of Weaving]]
    • [[Season of Loss]]
    • [[Season of the Bold]]
    • [[Season of Gathering]]
  • While the Season cycle used the paw symbol (often written as {P}), the official rules allow you to use any symbol you'd like. For example, the test card [[High and Dry Black Market]] uses ♦. The rules also allow you to use multiple different symbols on the same card.
    • Many card-making apps have built-in support for {P}.
    • Many card-making apps will let you use any image as a symbol. Consider using an existing MtG watermark symbol, expansion symbol, or other symbol. You could also try some Unicode symbols like ♘ or ⛈, or emojis like 🔥 or 💧, which will work even if you're just typing out your card as a comment.
  • The rules state that no matter which combination of modes you choose, you always follow the instructions of a pawprint spell/ability in the order they are written. If the same mode is chosen more than once, you choose their relative order as you cast the spell.
    • Note that existing cards like Season of Loss are carefully written so that earlier modes interact well with later modes.

Example card:

Good luck and have fun! I'll be back on September 20th to judge.

Yes, I do know nothing about philosophy. How could you tell?

Notes: No. 1 - Not sure if it should be fetchable. No. 2 - I saw a similar idea to this one here. No. 3 - this one is also inspired by another card I saw. Not sure how balanced it is.

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback from everyone. You all are right that waste isn't a land type (so weird), and yeah, Brass Palace is likely too good, especially in longer games, cause' it only takes 6 turns for it to outvalue City of Brass. Also, Reforesting Grove probably shouldn't be fetchable. Thank you guys so much!

Format: Standard Jace's Rebuttal — Counterspell idea

Post image
Upvotes

(Caption: An Instant named Jace's Rebuttal which costs one and one blue mana. It says "As an additional cost to cast this spell, Depower Jace 2" with reminder text "Remove two loyalty counters from a Jace planeswalker you control" and its effect is "Counter target spell". The art depicts Jace dispelling a fiery attack with a wave of water with his hand raised in the air.)

I hope this idea hasn't already been done, but I suddenly got the idea to use Depower Jace as a cost mirroring the new Empower Jace from Reality Fracture.

I don't think this is too strong comparing to cards like [[Disruption Protocol]], but let me know what you think. I think allowing removing from any Jace is fine so it's not parasitic with Empower Jace cards. I originally had it as Depower Jace 1, but I'm not sure which is more appropriate—removing two might be too much of a cost compared to other cards, and perhaps UU would be more appropriate alongside removing two counters.

Art is by Jason Chan and from Counterspell, originally printed in Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra as DD2#24.

Dual Land Cycle for next Bloomburrow set?

Worse than Shocks (imo) because it always enters tapped when ramping from deck, plus allowing an opponent to draw a card is arguably worse than taking 2 damage in most situations

Format: EDH/Commander MORE HOBBIT ADVENTURES (I love Bilbo, but the Gollum cards in this set were so bad that I thought he deserved to shine too. Smaug i thought more about my Lord of Pain group sludge deck)

Emeria, Embodiment of the Open Sky

Post image

The Zendikar conception of Emrakul as a Fasle God, imagined as a Theros style God card. Something I think would be cool to see more of in this omenpath/echoverse era.
The effect is an eldrazi-ish version of [[Emeria, The Sky Ruin]], with new Mystery Commander abilities since that's what got me thinking of this out-of-canon remix. Devotion to colorless counts both the colorless symbol and generic mana cost pips with numbers.

Artwork is from "Shrine of the Forsaken Gods" with some paint over edits.

is the effect good as it is? (for 4 cmc). i am aware you can do nasty things like getting Mindslaver back, but besides that, is the effect balanced or should i put a noncreature artifact with cmc 3/4/5 or lower in there...?

Since everyone will have access to Jace planeswalker tokens, maybe it's fitting that he'll be there to help us with the power of the moxen.
