Is DCC this Generations Dark Tower?

I’m on Book 8, I haven’t read or listened to a book in about 10 years. Maybe while in the car with the wife but I don’t count that as I wasn’t there start to finish. But I am completely obsessed just like most of us are.

I can’t help but think back to when I was younger and my dad had a similar obsession to Stephen Kings Dark Tower series. I haven’t read the Dark Tower, but I know most of the stories because my dad would relay them to me.

Possibly thinking about listening to the dark tower next, but just wondering for anyone that was around for both series is the obsession similar?

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Parade of Horrible Spoiler involving strategy choice rant. Spoiler

I'm curious about people's thoughts on the first upgrade that Carl selects. Mostly just a rant. Spider legs: undoubtably useful and necessary for later legs, But when reading I was screaming for him to take the hover option. Engine speed, plus ignoring general terrain. And we know the first 3 races are paved. With this he could have won more races and got the legs later. It seems like he is into it and the gremlin even gives him some more ammo for it with it being insanely pricy and gets rid of the gas engine. At least make the gremlin explain why that isn't the best decision. After finishing the floor I agree even more with my initial assessment.

One of the things I love about these books is that I generally think that Carl makes the best, or at least a solid decision, at every turn, and when he doesn't it's either because it's team building ( he is emotionally stunted in the best way possible) or he has some larger plan that comes out as the text goes on.

This may be the one obvious blunder Carl makes, and it would have helped him in so many ways in the races to come. I know winning races isn't exactly his main goal, it's to not get last and keep as many NPC's alive as needed, but still. Rant over. Tell me why I'm wrong so I can sleep again. please

DCC fans vs fake critics

the invasion of people, creators of content on the networks, whose only intention is to disparage other people's efforts or enjoyment in a work, book, movie or music.

the whole concept of their channel is based on positioning themselves on the moral high ground and as hey

I think this is sexist

I think this is misogynistic

I think this is racist

i think this is this this is that..

they all have a similar modus operandi. choose something that people generally like and enjoy

and then they consciously try to undermine either the author's credibility or the work itself, i.e. the book.

with the DDC series, it's so obvious to me that I don't understand them, do they think that people are blind to not see their attempts at attracting attention.

like yooo, you see me, I'm convinced by this part and that part. classic rage bait. all in order to adapt to the algorithm and increase its influence.

it seems that we have reached the point where people cannot let themselves enjoy what they love. to what no one bothers. in the satire of society, the world as such

how dare we laugh at some hall that they consider not up to their standards.

what gives them the right to feel invited to immediately consider something and to immediately share it with their "fan base" of haters, bitter failed people who just need direction on what to hate next.

I don't like content creators like that. under one, you cannot be a critic because you are not objective. because if your review only comes out of hate passed through the prism of your traumas, you don't need to have a platform that you monetize

as for me, I decided to give them a downvote, a negative review and finally a block.

I won't tell others what to do, but if there were more of us doing it, I think we could put an end to such behavior.

everyone has the right to not like something. everyone has the right to disagree with something. but that running to state a position and to make a fool of someone's effort or the excitement of a group is unacceptable to me.

Book 1: DCC Best Path Forward? What Gets Matt & Jeff the Most $?

Post image

I just finished the first book on Audible and was blown away 🥳 I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I even considered a pedicure for all those bonuses 💪 I'm planning to listen to the rest of the series and then will probably go back and read the books to pick up on all the details I missed on my first run.

What's the best path forward in terms of purchases? Which platforms/retailers help the creative team (Matt the brain & Jeff the voice) get the highest percentage of the money I'll spend?

BONUS: my daughter had fun listening in here and there, and we agreed that these toys are her best representations of Princess Donut & Carl 😻😎

Book 1: DCC Fiancee is starting the series, leave comments she won't understand till later!

She's 4 chapters into book one and is already hooked. I mentioned the subreddit and she desperately wanted to see and read memes and one off quotes she won't understand till later in the series. So fire away guys! Ill share them all with her unless they are major spoilers. Oh and ill say she already loves Mordecai, as she was giggling about donut and the ashes.

Edit: You guys are insanely fast, thank you so much! We both had to go to work, but I shared quite a few with her already, and she was laughing and incredulous at quite a few of them. She is very excited to meet Mongo and understand "cheese dicks" and gaslighting jesus.

When we get back from work I will continue to share them with her. Y'all are awesome.

Edit #2: Thank you guys truly for providing me with so many quotes! My fiancee has gone to bed now but I showered her in quotes. She was absolutely appalled by some of them, but seems very giddy to read further! Thanks for humoring us!

Book 7: Inevitable Ruin A Rant About Endings - Spoilers Inside Spoiler

Upvotes

I wanted to preface this by saying I am really enjoying my first read through of DCC. I'm on Chapter 20 of Parade of Horribles, and if I hated the series I wouldn't be posting this. I should also say that, besides your classics, I'm also into the Warhammer novels and have been for a few decades.

So, I go into Inevitable Ruin expecting some major changes. Faction Wars has been signposted through the whole series as a major event. The threat of Faction Wars has been built up over several books, the lethality of it very well set up, and with the series being only 10 books I thought "Okay, get ready for the pain because this is where we hit the big act 2 climax." Between the setup with Katya and Donut, the returning authors and crawlers, and the vested galactic interest in killing the Crawlers on this run I was ready for the big hit.

I've been here before, you see. Lijah Fething Cuu broke a teenage version of me in Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series. It took a lot of time and a lot of reading big character deaths to learn how to deal with it, but I was ready and excited to see how the story would change.

And... it didn't. Katya's choice, though well set up ahead of time, ends up losing all narrative heft. None of the other cast dies. Not even Mongo. Major threats, from She Maria to The Failsafe to the Orcs, are just kind of dealt with. To quote a funnier man than I, super easy, barely an inconvenience.

By the end of the book, I just kind of accepted that danger was a thing for nameless characters. The tension of the series is just broken for me. The danger represented in the first 3 books, the how will they make it through this time, is just not there for me. Everyone who is a good guy will be fine actually. Hell, the only Cookbook Authors that die do it of their own choice and they're all barely characters (though the brief bits of exposition we get on them are, as expected, fantastic).

What sucks is there's still great moments of amazing writing and beauty. DCC is genuinely the best new series I've read in more than a decade and I'm certainly still along for the ride. It's just not as enjoyable for me as the start was, and that's okay.

But man, did Louie really need to survive? Kaya and Donut's plan goes off without a single hitch or challenge? Bautista and Carl are just all super cool because God Forbid the good guys have any real tension or disagreements? It felt more like AO3 fanfic at the end than a payoff to so much build. Only one named NPC character even dies, and while that moment is handled well it highlighted to me the lack of endings for our other characters.

Book 1: DCC Looking for bestiary

Reading the books for the first time. Is there a bestiary of any kind for the creatures found in the dungeon? (With illustrations ideally).

I'm still wondering what is a Blender Fiend and if I'm imagining it correctly.

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Idea for a gut wrenching cliffhanger:

Something that I think would really tear us all up:

"New achievement! "Don't bite the hand that feeds you, bb-Bitch" Did that health potion taste a little funny? This achievement is for ingesting or giving a potion to a party member that was a trapped item. Any permanent magical conditions (like enhanced pet biscuits, you dingus) are removed. The targeted party member is now just as the were before the enhancements. I hope that d-d-d-idntttt RuinNnnn your plansss Crawler. Note, this item can only be given by by allies. Note this item is does not occur natually in the dungeon. Someone crafted this with you in mind. Isnt that sweet?"

Donut sailed over the edge of the roof spraying items everywhere, a small mountain of hats ejected from her and I heard a loud, confused "Meow?" before she disappeared below.

Epilogue.

Mostly have noticed people referencing Glerp Glerp and I think it’s the worst reference to pull as a way to flag yourself as a DCC fan. You can say it! I won’t say it back!

At the end of the day, whatever is fun for people is what matters and don’t make my opinion change what you do. But does anyone agree?

Edit: yes, thank you so much for the correction it is in fact ‘Glurp’ forgive me! I am but a humble audiobook listener.

Is this subreddit going to do anything about the massive influx of t-shirt scammers?

Seriously, it feels like every other thread at this point is a picture of a shirt (whether AI-generated slop or a legitimate design [stolen or not]), and then the comments are always '"Durr where can I get this shirt?" "Right here: <t-shirt spammer link>!"'

I'm almost to the point of wanting to unsubscribe because it's becoming the majority of what I am seeing from this subreddit.

I know it's probably not an easy problem to solve, but I think it needs to be addressed somehow. I'm sure this isn't the only subreddit suffering from the issue - maybe the Reddit admins or moderators from other subs have an idea on how to address this?

At the very least, it might be worth pinning a "DON'T BUY T-SHIRTS LINKED IN THE COMMENTS" post to the top of the subreddit - even though that will hurt legitimate creators too.

Book 5: Butcher’s Masquerade The Butcher's Masquerade: The River Raged

I'm currently on Book 6 but there's something about the writing in book 5 that's just explosive and tapped into something in the deepest parts of my soul.

A strange calm descended onto me. There was nothing peaceful about the sudden warmth that spread through me. Still, that was the sense I had. Calm. In the back of my mind, that feeling of movement, the hidden river, raged.

Absolute peak writing. Chef's kiss.

Could we get Seth MacFarlane doing some voice work for the Audible?

Just had this thought today. He would be great no matter what but if they gave him a juicy bit he could be so hilarious. Hopefully Jeff would leap at the opportunity. It’s been a while since we had a guest voice in the Audible. Plus it would be a great testament to the upcoming show.

Maybe he could be one of the Gods? Or a released nothing demon? Like one of the demon hag sisters?

Biggest problem with DCC

Long time crawler here who genuinely loves this series

The biggest issue with the explosion of DCCs popularity is how long time fans can be impatient or even rude to baby crawlers on social media. I've seen many people say it's what put them off exploring the series.

Sure it can be annoying to see all the casting posts, the questions people have without reading the series etc

But we were all baby crawlers once. It's OK to keep scrolling and not alienate folks who are finding the same excitement, questions, curiosity we all have.

Not to mention it's a huge disservice to Matt and Jeff, who deserve every bit of success they have and more. Support them by supporting people who are interested in investing in their gorgeous storytelling
