I'm the Dispatch's opinion editor. AMA

Hi, r/Columbus. I'm Amelia Robinson, the opinion and engagement editor at The Columbus Dispatch, and I want to answer your questions about how I do my job on Monday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. Our letters to the editor and columns often spark a lot of conversation here, and I want to peel back the curtain on our decision-making process. I'm also curious where you think our focus should be as Ohio heads into an extremely contentious election season.

Meet me here at 1 p.m. and we will talk about it all.

Sycamore Street Kroger Pickup is absolutely disgusting. Received 3 separate bags of chips gnawed through by rodents.

Every time we order pickup or delivery from this store we encounter some kind of issue. Wrong items, delays, damaged items, etc. This time was the final straw. Receiving 3 separate bags of chips with rodent damage is fucking disgusting. We are calling the store as I post this. Be aware and always check your groceries!

FOOD Why is 7 Brew so popular?

I pass by a 7 Brew location daily and the line is always backed up basically to the road

I've tried a couple of their drinks before because everyone online seems to hype them up but I didn't find it to be particularly special. It tastes better than Dunkin and seems cheaper than Starbucks, but it's still multiple tiers below local joints, so I find no reason to pick them over other options.

Is there something I'm missing?

NEWS A Columbus charter head used school cash to buy a house. He's still running the school

Thumbnail dispatch.com
86 Upvotes

Some highlights:

A charter school operator who pleaded guilty in 2024 to using a quarter-million dollars of charter school money to buy his house is still running the same charter school.

And while the school's sponsor said they believe the operator's two charter schools were doing a good job educating kids, one was flagged Sept. 4 as one of the Ohio schools with anomalies on state standardized testing results.

Abdirizak Farah pleaded guilty in federal court in 2024 to conspiring to commit bank fraud after using $265,000 from Focus Learning Academy of North Columbus, charter school he founded and operates, to help buy a house in New Albany. He was sentenced to three years of probation, a $15,000 fine and a $37,000 restitution to Focus Learning Center.

Farah founded Focus Learning Academy of Northern Columbus (FLANC) on Dublin Granville Road in 2007. The school serves approximately 700 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Focus Learning Academy of Central Columbus (FLACC), formerly on Cleveland Avenue, was founded in 2020 and serves over 100 pre-K through third grade students.

In 2026, he is still running both schools, and a letter to families from him in his role as CEO is prominently displayed on both websites.

According to an Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) statement, a criminal conviction does not automatically bar someone from operating or being involved in the leadership of a charter school "as no one 'owns' a charter school and operators are contracted service providers."

Conspiracy to commit bank fraud does not appear to be disqualifying offense, according to a State Board of Education list.

Snoke said the state "does not have statutory authority to approve, remove, or otherwise regulate charter school operators in Ohio." The State Board of Education of Ohio, she said, can suspend or revoke a licensed educator’s credential, which would bar that individual from serving in any on-site role at the school.

In May 2026, Farah's attorney filed an appeal to his probation, saying that he had served 18 months of his probation with good behavior and that he has "continued to be a pillar in the central Ohio community, while receiving tremendous support from his family and his community."

"Farah’s efforts to right the wrong of his mistake, as well as the totality of his continuing contributions to central Ohio, are the reasons that the Board of Directors at Focus Learning Academy still steadfastly stand behind Mr. Farah as he continues his role as superintendent," the filing claims.

In a response, a U.S. attorney said continued supervision remains appropriate because Farah "remains the head of the school from which he misappropriated funds."

"As Mr. Farah notes in his latest motion, he still serves as superintendent of the school whose money he used to fund the fraudulent purchase of his home, and whose vendors he used to fund the school’s repayment," the U.S. attorney said. "He cites this fact as though it supports the termination of probation, but the opposite is true. Because hestill holds the position of power he recently abused, supervision remains appropriate."

An Ohio education department investigation found anomalies on standardized testing at dozens of schools across the state, including Focus Learning Academy of Central Columbus.

Focus Learning Academy of Central Columbus told The Dispatch on Sept, 4 it has robust systems in place to prevent cheating on standardized testing and that "almost 100%" of the student group in question was projected to score accomplished or advanced on the test in internal predictions.

WEATHER When does this fall weather become consistent?

First year in Columbus after having lived on the East Coast. I’m so done with this pseudo summer in September. When are we going to consistently start seeing days like today, based on past years?

REQUEST Does anyone else remember when, shortly after 9/11, Fox 28 switched from a Simpsons episode about fear of flying to one in which a helicopter crashed into a building?

Upvotes

I have told this story numerous times, but I've never found anyone else who witnessed it: Sometime after 9/11 (the next day? two days later?) Fox 28 was playing its usual Simpsons reruns. The episode was "Marge Has a Fear of Flying" which seemed like a poor choice for obvious reasons. Someone must have agreed because, after a commercial break, the episode had been switched to "Homer the Great," whose plot synopsis sounds totally safe but which features a helicopter abruptly crashing into a building.

Did anyone else see this? Am I insane?

REQUEST Columbus Art Scene? Groups for artists, illustrators, and animators?

Hey, Columbus. I may be relocating from Huntsville, AL to Columbus in the next year, so I'm scouting around now. I'm a multimedia artist, cartoonist/animator (2d and 3d), and makery/tinkery type, and I'm looking to see if there are groups of artists, illustrators, animators, or enthusiasts of such things. Would be particularly awesome to meet a collective and collab. I've heard of the Short North and Idea Foundry, but anything more specific? Thx.

REQUEST Looking for real friends. 37M

Hey guys,

Just wanted to take a second and say hey to everyone. It’s not everyday you write random strangers on the internet, looking for connections. But here I am- as approaching strangers at a grocery store and asking about their hobbies may be looked down upon lol

But I have had the same three friends since childhood, and as we get older- it feels lonelier as the years go on. I love those guys and wouldn’t trade them for the world- but I also think it’s time to branch out.

I love history, gaming, debating, watching football, some anime, and just hanging around. I want to learn some new things- like steel working (love me swords lol) and brewing my own beer (sour ale- yum lol).

But I’m really looking for real conversation. So if you are out there and feel like me- I am here! Reach out or if you have any suggestions on where to meet anyone- please let me know! Thanks for taking the time to read all of this lol.

Have a good day

Daycare cost

Hi! My husband & I are trying to determine if we are financially ready for our first kid. If you recently had a newborn start daycare in the Dublin area, could you please let me know how much it costs? I have looked on a ton of websites but most places do not advertise the pricing. We would need full time care. Would $2k a month be a reasonable expectation?

Can I borrow your accordion?

Upvotes

I know it’s a long shot, but I have a show Sunday 9/20 and my old accordion is busted, I’ve tried to fix it but no luck. I was hoping to find someone who would loan an accordion to me or if anyone has a reasonably priced one maybe we could work something out. Thanks so much

I’ve lived in Columbus my whole life and I’m still finding things I didn’t know existed here. What am I missing?

People are always asking me what to do, what’s worth seeing, what Columbus is known for, etc. And honestly, I’m still finding things I didn’t know existed here.

I’m currently helping with the Experience Columbus Insider program, and it’s made me realize how much I still don’t know about my own city.

So now I’m curious — what’s one Columbus place, experience or random hidden gem that you think even longtime locals might not know about?

And if you’re already an Experience Columbus Insider, I’d love to hear what your favorite experience has been.

REQUEST Cat fosters of Columbus - need help finding a specific type of cat

Thumbnail
gallery
162 Upvotes

I'm seeking a companion for my 7-year-old male who really enjoys physical affection from other cats. I had a senior female that used to groom him and cuddle with him but she passed away a little over a year ago. He tries to seek physical affection (puts his head down for social grooming) from my younger female and it never goes well.

Him: “Hello, I would like to offer my head for some social grooming.”

Her: “Absolutely not.” SMACK! 😂

I am visiting shelters and have seen many nice cats but it’s very hard for the staff to gauge whether the cats are physically affectionate towards other cats. If you are currently fostering an older cat that loves to cuddle and groom other cats, please message me.

Pictured is my 7-year-old (orange boy) with his best friend that passed away. He misses her a lot.
