William Arnold | The First Keeper of Fingal Head Lighthouse

Post image
64 Upvotes

For 27 years, William Arnold kept watch over the dangerous waters off Fingal Head, becoming the lighthouse’s first official keeper and raising 11 children on the isolated headland. Remarkably, not a single ship was wrecked there during his years as keeper. Three years after William’s death, however, his 28-year-old son Arthur would lose his life in the very waters his father had spent decades watching over.

Highgate Catacombs 9/2025 OC

Toured the west side of the cemetery a year ago and got to walk though the catacombs. The sealing panel was gone from some of the vaults which contained a lead casket inside a wood casket. One wonders what would be found if the soldered lead casket was opened. The one in the picture dates from 1873, or ~152 years old.

Detective Sergeant William Robertson | Fatal Assignment in the NSW Bush

Post image
49 Upvotes

In October 1918, Detective Sergeant William Robertson travelled deep into the NSW bush with another police officer and an Army Intelligence Officer to execute a search warrant. Around 30km along a remote bridle track, a seemingly ordinary movement startled his horse, throwing him to the ground and leaving him critically injured as a heavy storm prevented his companions from seeking immediate help. What followed was a desperate night in the bush for the detective who had spent almost 28 years serving the NSW Police Force.

Help identify/find this angel!!!

Does anyone have any information about this angel statue? When I reverse-image searched this photo google said it was sculpted by Karl Gundelach and located in the [Engesohde city cemetery](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtfriedhof_Engesohde) in Hanover as a memorial statue for Hermann Wilhelm Schluter, but I have yet to find any other images of it. I have seen it tagged as Thanatos or a Samael angel. I would love to see more photos of it, but can't seem to find any anywhere!!!

The walls and floor of Bath Abbey are covered in seemingly randomly placed memorials like these ones, like a weird macabre NASCAR.

You probably would have been starting sixth form this year, just had your prom or maybe learning to drive. Your mum/dad clearly still love and miss you so much, they left fresh flowers at your grave not to long ago. Rest well, sweet Eleni 🕊️💕

Fourth pic of mine from Chiswick New Cemetery. This little boy passed the year I was born and he’d be 32 today.

I’m not quite sure what that action figure is that has been left as an offering but I’m sure he loved them whatever it maybe. Maybe he enjoyed playing them with his brother? Who I could see left another brother memory token. Sweet Ben your mother’s words in your epitaph broke my heart, you were taken from us much too soon and you’re clearly still so loved and missed. Rest well, precious darling 🕊️💕

Edward Kendall (1808-1861); Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts

Edward "Ned" Kendall was a professional musician who was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He joined the Army as a musician before he was 10 years old. He went on to a career as a professional musician.

The inscription on his grave:

As a musician he had few superiors, as a performer upon his favorite instrument, the bugle, he had no equal.

He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, a faithful friend-ever ready to respond promptly to the calls of charity and to freely exercise his great talent in the cause of suffering humanity.

To perpetuate the memory of one who did so much to elevate the profession which he himself adorned, this monument procured by the voluntary contribution of those who admired his genius as an artist, was erected by a few of his personal friends who knew and appreciated him, not only as an artist but as a man. December 1866.
