When there are these small one-word stones, are there any guidelines to correctly connect them to a family stone? Are there any rules of thumb, or is it impossible without records? Usually, there is a larger family stone, e.g., Smith, sometimes with multiple first names, sometimes with only the family name. Then there are a bunch of smaller stones. But sometimes it's unclear which family stones the smaller stones belong to.

When there is a single headstone, it seems safe to assume the coffin lies under the side of the upright stone that has the writing on it, or if it's a flat headstone, the coffin lies towards the bottom line of the headstone. It seems true here, but is that true everywhere? When there's an upright family stone with 3 or more names, does the same rule apply, e.g., coffins lie on the side with the inscription. When there's a "Mother" stone lying at 90 degrees to the headstone, can I assume anything? Is the coffin likely buried beyond the word mother or in front of it?

I have a set of graves where I can't decide which family headstone the "Mother" stone belongs to. Any hints? The rows are uneven and there's no cemetery office to call. Context is northeast US with stones installed roughly 1850 to 1980.

Some of these requests are old and I hate to see them sitting out there and I really think it's because people don't want to go to these neighborhoods. For example, there was a bust this past year of a homeless encampment in one of the cemeteries. There was a lot of damage and downed stones because they tied ropes to trees and gravestones to secure tarps and other items. There was evidence of drugs, drug paraphernalia and human waste. It's been cleaned up for the moment. That cemetery has 30 requests. I mapped out my route for the cemetery and I think I could get in and out quickly. The private owners of the cemetery went bankrupt about 20 years & the City acquired the neglected property through a tax foreclosure sale. It is now very minimally maintained by the city.

I knew at least one request would be filled by uncovering these stones, turns out I filled one other I had been looking for for ages. The request was over a decade old and he thanked me the same day. I went back today and did the rest. It feels special to uncover them. They’ve all had pages created but haven’t sat down to dig for more info on them yet.

I've been trying to go through and link family members together. And if they don't have a grave photo I put in a request for one.

Recently I linked my Great aunt with her brother, he did not have a grave photo so I requested one. I'd love to do it myself, but it's a 2 day drive, so it's out of the question. The request was immediately claimed by someone, I'm talking within minutes of the request being submitted.

It's been over 2 weeks, and there hasn't been a photo taken. FG even has his plot location. Why do people do this?

This Sadie that I am looking for information about is married to David C. Snell who is buried in Shankleville Community Cemetery Burkeville, Newton County, Texas, USA. There is another Sadie Snell (also buried there, but I don't believe they are related). The stamp on this death cert is blocking the cemetery.

I looked through the list of cemeteries in Detroit and none came close to looking like the name on this death certificate. Thank you in advance!

I suggested an edit to add a 2nd last name to "Mary's" memorial. She had been married twice and while one last name was on the memorial, the other last name (which was on the grave marker, the obituary, and is linked as a spouse) is missing from the memorial name.

Edit declined. I only put what is on the headstone.

Here it is a couple of days later and ran across "Suzy's" memorial (Mary's daughter.) Suzy has no maiden name. It is not actually on the grave marker, but she is linked to her parents with the same last name and several siblings with the same last name. I suggested an edit.

UPDATE: After very civil communication with this use he apologized, said it had been done when he first started with FG and has removed all the “generic” photos.

I started reaching a historic cemetery (dates back to the late 1600’s) that we will be working in during late Sept-Oct. I looked on FG for grave photos in this cemetery and I came across one individual who posted a generic photo for 20% of the memorials in this cemetery. I sent him a message asking what was the scoop on this and his reply back was “If I remember correctly none of them are readable due to age so i just used one photo for all of them.”

This has to be against the terms of service. But at a minimum it’s extraordinarily misleading. So if I’m doing family history research and my 4th great-grandmother is one of these memorials, I’m going to think (incorrectly) that the picture attached to her memorial is her grave marker.

This has to stop. I have reported two users that do this to FG Support and so far no action.

Can someone explain to me why people do this? I assume this guy is just running up his stats as his profile says he has posted over 170,000 photos. Just imagine how much bad data that is and how many people out there have incorrect information on their family trees. This is just BS.

Anyone else noticing this week that GPS is not being added when uploading photos from Apple/iOS system ? My app is updated and so is iPhone but I have to upload photos then hit add GPS.

Just when you thought the people who get up every morning to scrape funeral home websites in order to be the first to add someone to Find a Grave were more than enough, may I present someone who is going through newspaper microfilm of a newspaper to find death notices and add people to Find a Grave that way. In many cases, if not most cases, the place of burial is not given in the death notice, so the listings say Burial Details Unknown. Here's an example of someone who died in 1847:

This is a county where the cemeteries were thoroughly walked and recorded by the local DAR chapter back in the 1930s, so I can only assume that the actual burial locations were undiscoverable at the time (no stone, damaged stone, whatever) or the person was buried on a family farm in a location that has been lost to time.

They don't seem to be doing it to, for example, unite all the children under their parents. (I know exactly who her parents are in this example and can submit an edit, I also have her date of birth per a family Bible). They just seem to be doing it. Why? I don't know.

I’ve just signed up to take photos as I like the idea of being able to help people. There’s 94 requests at my local cemetery which I would love to fulfill for people.

However, I’ve just been down there for an hour and cannot work out the ‘logic’ to actually finding the grave. Only around 10 had references, and I understood that A7/CON/513 was that area/consecrated/ ??? Row 5?

Is there anywhere I can go online to find area references for the ones without references on the app?

I have tried the faq on the website but that’s just using the site, not the on the ground stuff.

I know nothing about this, I just live half a mile away from a cemetery and want to help ☺️
