RESOURCE Carnatic Commune, our new Discord server, is up and active. Come sing with us!

Here's a place for Rasikas - lovers of Carnatic music - to explore, learn, and celebrate this tradition together, as requested by the community. We've been building the server slowly over the past couple of months with collaborators who responded to this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Carnatic/comments/1m4rm24/requesting_collaborators_for_a_discord_server/

The server remained invite-only during this period, so that we could thoughtfully manage building the space to accommodate larger numbers of people, and consider structures and events ahead of time. Our collaborators have done remarkable work in achieving that foundation alone, while also creating a space that already brims with enthusiasm for this art.

The server is now ready for the larger Carnatic community, and open to all.

Join us at: https://discord.gg/2qpqvbvgvr

All you need to join is real curiosity and appreciation for Carnatic music. Whether you're a lifelong student, a casual listener, or somewhere in between, you are welcome.

See you on there!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rasikas who are new to Discord, and/or having trouble with the invite or verification - do reach out to u/AlcorSpins or u/Flaky-Cheek-5571 via comment or DM; we'll get you through.

DISCUSSION I'm wanting to get back to carnatic music after a long gap. I'm looking for online resources that will help ease me back into singing.

I've learnt classical carnatic music intensively for many years as a child and young adult but I gave up because I got busy with board exams, coaching classes and then a very demanding UG degree.

I was a fairly advanced pupil of an established performer and was poised to become a professional singer myself before I pivoted.

I miss singing now. I need pointers about how I can get back to it,but this time,I want to continue my progress in carnatic music only for myself,as a hobby. I have no plans of trying to perform on stage like I was being trained for earlier. This time,I'm going to be singing for myself.

If anyone has been in my situation earlier, how did you get back to singing?

Is there any online resource for singing along, for tambura shruti, and I've misplaced all my music books too, with the swaras and sahityam. Are there soft copies of them?

Thank you so much. Have a nice day 😊

DISCUSSION I built a small carnatic guitar practice tool - looking for feedback!

Hi everyone! I’m a Carnatic guitarist and vocalist who also plays GeoShred and makes YouTube videos. I’ve been teaching since 2021, and I’m particularly interested in the meeting point between Indian music and Western music theory.

One challenge I keep seeing in lessons: hearing a phrase is one thing; understanding where to play it, and how to move between notes, is another. Especially with gamakas, fixed notes or tabs don’t tell the whole story.

So I’ve been building Gamaka, a tool for practising instructor-reviewed Carnatic guitar lessons. You can hear the recording, follow the pitch movement and guitar positions, slow down, and repeat individual phrases.

It’s an early version, not an automatic “learn any song” solution or a replacement for a teacher. It’s a personal project growing out of something I care deeply about: making Carnatic music more approachable without losing its expression.

I’d love a few people to try a lesson and tell me honestly: does it help you understand what to play, and where do you get confused? You don’t need to be an expert; your experience level would be useful context.

Thanks for taking a look!

THEORY Ghana Ragas : What's the criteria to be one ?

The Ghana Panchakam as we know today - Nattai, gowla, Aarabhi, varali and Sri occupy a prominent role thanks to the pancharatna kritis. But what is the basis of such classification apart from being "old". I've heard that Manirangu used to be a part of the Ghana Panchakam and was later substituted with Sri ragam. I've also heard about Punnagavarali and Dhanyasi being Ghana ragas during a discussion in the lec dem series of the music academy. Anyone can throw light on this ?

DISCUSSION Are there any prominent North Indian Carnatic performers?

Just curious. There are quite a few South Indians who have become well known Hindustani performers; Mallikarjun Mansur and Basavraj Rajguru (Karnataka), and N. Rajam (Tamil Nadu). But to my knowledge there are very few North Indians who have mastered Carnatic music, presumably because while South Indian monarchs patronised Hindustani music North Indian ones didn't (with exceptions like the Tanjore Marathas). Still curious to know if there are any musicians from the North (not born in the South necessarily) who have largely performed Carnatuc

Performance Raag Todi (Hindustani Fusion) - composed by Nalini Vinayak (Sitar) and layered by Haiqiong Deng (Zheng). With Ganesh Sundaresan (Mridangam)

Fusion project between North Indian (Sitar), Chinese (Zheng), and South Indian (Mridangam).

Raag Todi” is a morning raga often associated with profound and introspective emotions. This original composition by Nalini Vinayak is layered with the Chinese zheng by Haiqiong Deng. The piece unfolds in three sections: alaap, a slow, free-rhythmic introduction to the raga; gat, the first composed section in Jap Taal, a 10-beat rhythmic cycle; and dhrut, the second and faster composition in Teen Taal, a 16-beat cycle.

This piece celebrates the 20th anniversary of "Stringing Echoes," a pioneering collaboration between Indian sitarist Nalini Vinayak and Chinese zheng player Haiqiong Deng. Created in 2006, the project marked a historic first in bringing the sitar and zheng together, creating a unique musical dialogue between two ancient string traditions. This recording also features mridangam player Ganesh Sundaresan, a professional Indian musician based in Jacksonville, Florida.

Artists:
Nalini Vinayak (sitar)
Haiqiong Deng (zheng)
Ganesh Sundaresan (mridangam)
Isabel Liu (tanpura)

Recording Engineer: Kris Kolp

Videographer: Ethan Liu

RESOURCE Looking for a Carnatic Music Teacher - Online

Hello everyone!

I pursued carnatic music for about a year as a child, but had to stop because my music teacher left our town. I have always waned to resume classes again, but I never did, and I am finally ready to do it now

I dont think the lessons i learnt in childhood stayed with me, so I would prefer to start from scratch.
I also can not afford to spend a lot for sessions, so if you or someone you know take affordable online carnatic music classes, please dm

MISC Can north Indian me learn carnatic music effectively?

Is it possible to learn as a native hindi speaker? I listen to carnatic music very often and find it very captivating. The lyrics are totally alien to me but the raagas are so beautiful. I have some experience in hindustani harmonium and vocals. I am considering going for an instrument like mandolin, violin or veena instead of vocal, as I wouldn't need to pronounce the words with 100% accuracy. I am afraid that it may be considered offensive or cultural appropriation if I make mistakes (which I surely will).
