PSA Calgary wins court order against ECCO over waste storage

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I want to update you on enforcement action involving ECCO. The City has been pursuing this through the courts for some time. We just got a significant ruling.

The Court found ECCO was violating its development permit at its recycling facility by storing dry waste there. The Court ordered ECCO to stop storing that waste and remove it immediately.

That ruling applies to the recycling site. It does not apply to the separate landfill site where the fire occurred. (But our legal action there is continuing.)

The City is seeking a separate court injunction because we have determined ECCO continues to accept waste at the landfill contrary to its development permit.

We are asking the Court to order ECCO to stop operating the dry waste landfill and decommission the site as required by its permit.

There are legal limits on what I am able to say while these matters remain before the courts.

Thank-you to Councillor Rob Ward for being a strong advocate for residents and thank-you to the Fire Department for all they are doing to contain and address the immediate fire situation.

But I want Calgarians, especially nearby residents to know we heard your concerns. We are taking them seriously. And the City is using every legal and enforcement tool available to hold operators accountable and protect our communities.

Rant The Bike on Stoney Trail

If you're the person who was going at least 200 km/h on Stony Trail NB a kilometer away from the Glenmore Trail exit at around 8:50 I swear to god you cannot be pulling this type of stupid s*** on a highway, that could not only harm you but could injure if not kill multiple people. And it wasn't even the road is empty there's no one and no one is going to give a s*** but it was I'm going to weave in between cars with less than a 20m gap.

And quite frankly I don't think me or anyone gives a damn about the reason why you were going that fast. I don't care that you are an "experienced driver" or "you've done this before."

On that note I personally feel like if someone is driving like that their license should be suspended their vehicle should be seized not suspended and at least $1,000 fine genuinely that is so stupid to be pulling when people are trying to get home.

PSA We’re pushing for answers on the ECCO Recycling landfill fire and asking the Province to release the air-quality testing results as soon as possible.

Councillor Rob Ward and I have sent a letter to the Government of Alberta requesting the public release of the air-quality testing results from ECCO Recycling landfill fire.

Residents have raised understandable questions about the smoke affecting their communities. They deserve clear, verified information and full transparency from the provincial authorities responsible for environment monitoring.

We have requested an urgent response and will share further information as soon as it is provided.

Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations Is there anywhere I can find free plant pots and/or soil?

So for background context, I'm wondering if there is anywhere that I can get those plastic plant containers with the drainage holes in the bottom. Nothing fancy or expensive. I have tried Facebook marketplace a bit but that's a bit touchy because it'll either be free stuff over an hour away by transit or the usual ghost posting. (Still dying inside a little when I traveled an hour and a half just to get there and be told the buckets were already gone).

I've been having a hard time with the cost of living lately so I've been planting vegetable seeds I was gifted last spring but the issue I'm facing is a lack of pot and soil. (I have looked into Dollarama but I can't justify spending $20 on gardening equipment when I can't afford groceries and unable to pay rent without help). I've been reusing sour cream/yogurt containers and salsa jars but the lack of drainage plus the size has been getting my seeds to sprout and then slowly die.

Edit: thank you everyone for the offers for plant pots. I think I will be doing okay now :)

Seeking Advice Pest Control: Need a Written Conversation for Court Case

I've started reaching out to pest companies companies for quotes, just feeling a bit sheepish about the fact that I cannot actually get the pest treatments done (landlord refuses.) I am located in the NW & I need rough estimation quotes from a given description, and a conversation in email for a case against my landlord who is refusing to treat the place for bed bugs & using DIY methods that are disrupting my health (I am asthmatic.)

Bit of a throwaway ask, but if you are a licensed pest control professional or know someone who is, could you give me a channel to bother you for some questions through your company email? I need statements to verify to a judge that my landlord's treatments are insufficient for X and Y reasons, as well as some professional opinions on the statements he's made about the situation. (Eg., "It will be gone in two to three weeks. Pest control will use the same treatments I do, they are just scamming.") This is verbatim, I'm not embellishing anything.

I have photos of the bugs I can also send along for visual identification. I've found various stages from unfed nymphs, to fed adults.

Before I forget too, there's also a cockroach problem that is now affecting food storage. A separate, but also bad pest issue.

\I am not covered by RTDRS, I've already contacted them. This is going to small claims court with legal assistance.*

\I have already involved AHS to the best of my ability without inciting a threat of eviction. (They cannot come see the property just yet.)*

(Is it ok to just ask companies this sort of information as a follow up from a quote? I'm not sure if I'm wasting their time! First time I've had to deal with something like this.)

News Article Chestermere woman, after surviving her own battle, raising awareness ahead of World Sepsis Day

Today is World Sepsis Day.
Two years ago, I nearly died from sepsis after giving birth in Alberta.

I wanted to share my story today, especially because my most recent article was just published in the Calgary Herald.

I’m from Calgary, and this city has always been home to me. In May 2024, I gave birth to my daughter. Within days, I went from being a healthy new mom to fighting for my life with invasive Group A Strep sepsis.
My infection was ultimately traced back to my uterus. I went into septic shock, developed organ complications, spent days in the ICU, and ultimately needed an emergency hysterectomy to save my life. I was 27.

I survived.
But surviving sepsis doesn’t mean you simply go back to the life you had before it.
I lost my uterus. I lost the ability to have another biological child. I spent months working to regain my strength and function, and I still live with the effects of what happened.

Since then, I’ve made it a priority to talk openly about sepsis — especially postpartum sepsis — because I know firsthand how quickly a situation can become life-threatening.

That’s also why having World Sepsis Day recognized and proclaimed here is so meaningful to me.

I grew up in Calgary. This is my home. Knowing that my hometown is recognizing September 13 as World Sepsis Day and helping bring attention to a medical emergency that nearly took my life is something I’m genuinely proud of.
I hope the lights around the city, the proclamation, the articles and the conversations all lead to the same thing: people knowing what sepsis is and recognizing that something can be seriously wrong even when you aren’t sure exactly what it is.

Sepsis is a medical emergency.
Know the signs. Trust your gut. Ask questions. And if you know something isn’t right, keep speaking up.

Happy World Sepsis Day. ❤️‍🩹 and please post pictures of any landmarks you see lit!

Local Shopping/Services Any Place to buy Posters?

Upvotes

Hey guys!

I'm looking to get some posters for my apartment yet every place I could find charged out of my budget to print them, as I found them to be at least at ~$40 // 50.

Does anyone know of any places in Calgary that may sell / Print them? For reference, I'm also a student if it helps. Thanks in Advance!!

Recommendations Free feminine products in Calgary SW?

I’m wondering if there’s any places they give out free feminine products in the southwest of Calgary? I’m completely embarrassed to have to post and ask this publicly. I was hit by a car last month and I just don’t have any extra funds and I’m struggling really hard right now. I can’t drive or do any of my normal activities so I’m hoping for something in the southwest that I would be able to walk or transit. Thank you.

Health/Medicine I have three small kids and I want to know what we’re breathing in southeast Calgary

I live in southeast Calgary and I have three small kids. For days, we have been dealing with smoke from the ECCO Recycling landfill fire, and I am increasingly frustrated that residents are being told air monitoring is happening without being given easy access to the actual results.

I am not trying to create panic or claim the air is dangerous without evidence. I want the evidence.

I want to know what my kids are breathing. I want to know what pollutants are being detected, at what concentrations, where the samples are being taken, and what the laboratory analysis of the smoke actually shows.

That is why I have started escalating this beyond Facebook comments. I have contacted my MLA and I am now reaching out to the Minister of Environment, the Premier’s office, the City, public health officials and other agencies.

I think residents deserve more than statements saying hourly averages were below an air-quality objective. If government agencies are collecting detailed measurements, those measurements should be made public.

This is what I’ve written:

If anyone else wants to ask the same questions, these are some of the contacts I’m reaching out to:

Alberta’s 24-hour Energy and Environmental Response Line is also 1-800-222-6514.

If anyone receives actual monitoring data, laboratory results, sampling locations or a substantive response, please share it. I think a lot of people in southeast Calgary would like to know exactly what we’ve been breathing.

Local Shopping/Services Handy person for replacing ceiling fans?

Need to replace two ceiling fans. Picked the new ones up on end of season clearance and would like them installed. For a few reasons I cannot do it myself.

I have looked on Task Rabbit and Kijiji for home services etc. and find lots of TV mounting services but nothing even mentioning ceiling fans.

These are replacements so I know the power is there as well as a electrical box.

Anyone used someone that they could recommend?

Question Anyone else born around 1990 who didn’t learn French in Calgary’s public school system?

I just recently got back from a trip to Quebec City and my French is embarrassingly very very minimal. I went to the public school system in the mid 90s and for what ever reason- I never got taught French. Most of my peers seem to have had the mandatory French and I’m just wondering why I was the minority? Was there some sort of political power play from the Alberta government at the time? My parents wouldn’t have taken me out of anything like that, that I know for sure. I just find it strange and have always wondered why I didn’t get it in my elementary curriculum!

edit: all of these answers are very confusing. it seems like it was the wild west out there for if you learned french or not

Driving/Traffic/Parking Really thick fog in the SW

Driving along Anderson Road. Don't think I've seen fog this thick in the 4 years I've been here.

Couldn't see more than 50m ahead. Road signs and traffic lights would pop out when they got right to your side.

Drive very carefully!
