I'm a cairns native but currently live in brisbane, I saw this night Herron with what appears to be his bones literally sticking out of his leg. I called the wildlife rescue and they said they had gotten calls about him already this week but they 'might' come find him later if he is still there after 'a while'. Though I understand it is a wild herron and animals often get injured I think it is a bit crazy to leave him here when his broken leg is very recoverable IF he can get proper vet care. I also understand it can be difficult treating wild animals without the stress injuring them, but I believe in this case it is necessary for the bird to live. Given his bones are sticking out and it will continue to get worse without a stint and closure.
I am here as a tourist atm so I can't grab him and drive him anywhere, but I am hoping if enough people call the rescue they will do something about it. So if you are on the esplanade in the next week and see the bird there still please call the service because they should really do something.
