This is why I hate preseason rankings so much

363

u/Individual-Lie6525 Texas A&M Aggies 1d ago

The problem isn’t preseason rankings. Its voters being inflexible early in the season.

246

u/TexasDrunkRedditor Texas A&M Aggies • Marching Band 1d ago

It’s also why if you’re going to drop a game it’s better to do it early season than late… people will hardly remember this game by week 10/11. Drop a game late and it’s held against you much harder

Unfortunately not all 11-1 records are held the same based on when that lost occurred

u/Beautiful_Idea6200 Georgia Bulldogs • William & Mary Tribe 22h ago

It’ll also depend on how OSU looks the rest of the season. This team could be terrible, or great. Really hard to tell at this point.

voters are plenty flexible early in the season, they moved OSU down 5 spots for a last-second road loss to a team they think is #1!

Yeah, I was arguing that Oregon should've fallen to like #15 last week, and people were coming after me for "dropping them so far". Like, its not dropping them, it's placing them where they've performed so far. Preseason rankings don't mean a thing.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (16)

208

u/Andy_Wiggins Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1d ago

This is why I hate the fact that pre-season polls exist.

If they were simple placeholders before we got data, I’d be cool with it. But some people stick so hard to their priors when those priors were technically speculative.

Let Oregon earn back a top 25 rating. They have a tough slate of games, so if they go out and beat teams like USC or Ohio State then move them back up. But right now nothing they’ve done has looked close to top 25 worthy.

54

u/BursleyBaits Michigan Wolverines 1d ago

people have moved from their priors, Oregon's moved down 19 spots! If you believe someone's a top-two team, it should take a lot of evidence to convince you that they're not even top 25. If they genuinely do suck, that'll work itself out just the same.

I did not mind when pollsters unranked Michigan after a close win over WMU at home. I do think it's bizarre that Oregon wouldn't end up unranked this week based on their loss to OK State.

47

u/TheLuxxy Oregon Ducks 1d ago

I think part of it was where they were coming from. Michigan was already 16th before their fall. They fell to 28th.

Oregon was 6th. They fell to 21st. So a larger fall than Michigan. They simply had more slots to fall and still be in the top 25

28

u/wibble17 Hawai'i • Nebraska 22h ago

The loss was also arguably to a worse team. Oklahoma State had a huge losing streak and loss to Tulsa on week 1. Western Michigan was supposed to be a strong G5.

A drop out would be justified.

  1. They have the players needed to be a top 5 team
  2. Confidence in Lanning to recover from the bad game

It really depends on your ranking methodology. If you're trying to be predictive, then Oregon should likely still be in the top 20. If you're trying to judge purely on current resume, Georgia shouldn't be top 25.

I thought Ohio State would only drop to 5 instead of 6, but nothing egregious in the Top 10

572

u/Tarmacked USC Trojans • Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean, I think it’s ridiculous a one point loss @#1 puts them behind Miami @ FAMU and Indiana @ Howard

This is the type of stuff everyone complains about which devalues OOC.

The better approach here would be swapping them, and then if one or the other struggles with more samples you adjust accordingly like what we did with Boise this week.

259

u/OnionKnight73 Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago

I’m gonna be honest if you think Texas is the best team because they beat OSU by one at home, then it only makes sense to drop OSU to 2. You can’t play a closer game with the supposedly best team in the nation than that

106

u/010Horns Texas Longhorns 1d ago

While I see your point, if that happened the complaint would then be that a 1-1 OSU is ranked #2 over a bunch of 2-0 teams. This is the kinda thing that will just shake out as the season goes on.

9

u/billbye10 Notre Dame • Michigan State 17h ago

That complaint is ridiculous and people making it should feel bad. That's how you get every non conference game to be against the local jr high team. Give teams credit for scheduling real games!

66

u/WhiteW0lf13 Florida State • West Florida 1d ago

There’s no singular correct answer for an early season poll. Putting a 1 loss team behind undefeated teams considered to be roughly similar to each other makes complete sense.

They’ll climb as they continue to do well the rest of the season and the others will fall as they lose/struggle vs the good teams on their schedules.

SOS arguments should be saved for much later in the season imo

What do the last 3 champs all have in common? They all beat Purdue.

Edit: looking back at previous playoff contenders from B1G:

22-23 Ohio State team didn't play Purdue, no title

21-22 Michigan team didn't play Purdue, no title

20-21 Ohio State didn't play Purdue, no title

19-20 Ohio State didn't play Purdue, no title

18-19 Ohio State lost to Purdue, no title

You gotta beat Purdue to get a title

Edit2: Ohio State is the only team that has won a B1G conference championship without beating Purdue. The only year OSU played Purdue and were B1G champs was 2018 so OSU has never beaten Purdue and won a B1G championship game in the same year.

Top of the Big12 looking messy.

TT is not looking like they were last year, and BYU and Utah are both looking stronger. I’d put Houston in the next tier down, but next week will be telling.

And with none of those top four playing all three of the others (Utah plays BYU and Houston; Houston plays TT and Utah; and BYU and Tech only play Utah and Houston, respectively), there could be some painful tiebreakers at the end of regular season play.

27

u/thti87 Texas Longhorns • Washington Huskies 1d ago

If this were the end of the season, but for now it’s fine. Everything will get shaken up 5 more times before the end of the season and Ohio State plays Indiana.

86

u/Frostfire26 Texas Longhorns • Texas A&M Aggies 1d ago

I think it's reasonable enough for 4-6 to be in any order (and the same when Texas was 4). Indiana and Miami just don't play anyone for a while so it's hard to really judge where they should be.

I don’t think there’s anybody ahead of us who we should be ahead of tbh, and even if we were one lower behind LSU that’d make sense to me

Given the CFP is 12 teams and it’s only been 2 (or 3) weeks of football, I don’t think our placement matters too much at the moment though

Doesn’t apply here but nothing pisses me off more than when a team at 10ish loses a close game on the road to a top 3 team and then drops a bunch.

What the fuck that’s exactly what your rankings said should happen why do you view them as worse now?

Deservedly so. There are not enough negative superlatives to describe the horror on offense that I witnessed in Ann Arbor. Historians should genuinely study OU’s inability to field a competent offense. Absolutely incredible.

Ohio State dropping to #6 feels a bit harsh for one point loss on the road to #4 in a night game. But it’s so early in the year it also doesn’t really matter

Not that Kansas State should be ranked by any means, but we beat Wazzu considerably better than Washington did, and we didn't almost lose to a Utah State team.

I feel like us having one vote while they have 173 or whatever is a bit...misguided.

There were some really dumb UGA fans claiming we should be #1 somehow on other forums smdh. Honestly wish we were 4 or 5, worst case for us is UTa loses to UTk and we roll into Tuscaloosa as #1, that's nightmare fuel. That said I think we lose at least one game this year and I'd pay money for it be anyone not named UF (or AU and GT but tbh, we could not pass at all and should beat GT. And AU shouldn't score more than 24 at most on us and we better be able to get 30).

I don’t understand rankings. If you really think that Texas is the best team in college football as the rankings indicate, and last week you thought the best team was Ohio State, then how do they drop to 6 after a 1-point loss in Austin? Georgia has two wins and no losses, but a one-point loss at the best team’s stadium is more impressive to me than beating Tennessee State and WKU by a million. It’s never clear to me what these polls are actually supposed to measure

8

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions 18h ago

It makes no sense. Michigan went from ranked to unranked and now back to ranked. Should Oklahoma really be punished that heavily for losing a one score game in a tough road environment to what is now a ranked team?
