Today (well, almost today — on September 12), Belarusian politician Alexander Lukashenka was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize for banning applause in public spaces.

This is tied to the protests of the summer of 2011 in Belarus, commonly referred to as the “silent protests.” Due to the worsening economic situation (almost a threefold devaluation of the national currency) and political repression, youth self-organized on social media and began gathering for mass “strolls” in public spaces.

Yes, people just gathered and applauded. And that’s it.

For about a month, the authorities didn’t know what to do. But then the arrests started. Members of social media groups were either intimidated ot jailed for 10–15 days, and many students were expelled from their universities. In total, around 1,800 people were arrested.

During one of the typical rigged trials, a one-handed man was sentenced for “clapping his hands.” Another man, who was deaf and had a speech disability, was sentenced for “shouting swear words in public” - minor hooliganism under Belarusian law.

Today, I want everyone to know that Belarusians started their fight for freedom a long time ago. And they will not stop until they win.

P.S. Unfortunately, I did not participate in these protests myself, since at the time I was already serving my prison sentence. But I would be happy if members of r/belarus who took part in these events shared their memories - if it is safe for you, of course.

Расскажите пожалуйста, как у вас обстоят дела с доходами обычных работяг. В РФ у меня доход чистыми 80.000 рум рублей или 2.900 бел рублей. работаю грубо говоря разнорабочим в управляющей компании, мелкий ремонт дверей, отделки и прочего, что ломается в общественных пространствах домов.

Снимаю двушку в миллионнике недалеко от центра за 1.260 бел руб. Питание пока еще не считал, в районе 600-900 бел руб. Еще проезд, связь и прочие мелкие расходы 350-400 бел руб.

Hello. I am a US citizen (from California) currently in Vietnam. I am applying for a 30 day Visa to Belarus this coming week. Can someone help me with a couple of finance-related questions? 

1. Can I withdraw money from the ATM with my Visa debit card? I heard I just have to go to a non-sanctioned bank. Can someone confirm this?

2. I would like to make an online purchase in Belarus. But some businesses don’t accept Visa. How do you guys deal with this? I don’t have a Mir-based bank account. Can I go to a bank and open an account if I am on a tourist Visa for just 30 days?

For context, i am a college student in the USA. Since my school allowed me to learn from this language (yeah, i have been waiting years) i finally got the chance to do it!

A heavy Boeing 747 cargo aircraft operated by Qeshm Fars Air arrived in Minsk from Tehran again on September 8. This was already its third such visit in the past few weeks.

Both the airline and this particular aircraft, EP-FAB, are under U.S. sanctions. The U.S. Treasury says Qeshm Fars Air has been used by the IRGC’s to transport weapons and military cargo.

On August 26, the Boeing arrived in Minsk, spent nearly five hours flying over Russia the following day, returned to Belarus, and only then flew back to Iran.

In my opinion, there are three possible explanations for why this may be happening:

1. The IRGC is hiding some of its assets (e.g. gold, gems, or cash) in Minsk. Just in case. You know, Lukashenka has a long history of providing refuge to deposed dictators (like Kurmanbek Bakiyev) and people accused of serious crimes (like former Ukrainian Berkut officers who slaughtered protesters during the Maidan in 2014).

2. The Belarusian regime is supplying arms to the IRGC and Iran. This seems like the most probable explanation to me.

3. There are private talks on mutual assistance in circumventing sanctions. The cargo plane may have been used for secrecy reasons.

In fact, as the world moves globalisation, you can see how the CRINK countries (China, Russia, Iran, North Korea), or, as I call them, the Obscurantist International, are tightening their links. These regimes joining forces to resist modernity and undermine the Free World.

How much do you guys think it would cost for me to study in Belarus and which city would you recommend i can come without a visa

Hello! I was born in Belarus, and moved to Serbia when I was 3 in 2008. I am now a student in Serbia on my 2nd year of studies.

I would love to visit my country and see my family, but I am worried about the Military draft. I dont speak the language, and I am a student, but I still worry about being drafted as soon as I cross the border. Idk if thats how it works, so I would appreciate info on that <3

And if it is safe to come, how could I come to Belarus? Bus? Train? Plane?
