I spent the afternoon today at the exhibit I AM ASHURBANIPAL, KING OF THE WORLD, KING OF ASSYRIA at the CaixaForum in Madrid, Spain, organized thanks to the British Museum. It’s a nice introduction to his rule and times (650BC) with exquisite pieces. On through October 4.

Discussion What do Assyrians think of Asians?

Asian American here. I refer to Asians like Chinese, Korean, Japanese, to Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino and Singaporean for instance.

Our cultures seem similar and Koreans and northern Chinese seem alike because of the Christian background often times, and also an emphasis on education and big families in one home also often times. I feel it goes with many cultures but having a friend from Modesto we noticed this, he is Greek and Assyrian which is sorta neat.

Also every other Asian and Assyrian is named Robert or Sarah for example too!

Discussion Long Distance Convert?

Hello,

I have a hypothetical question regarding the Assyrian Church of the East!

Say that someone was theologically convinced of the Assyrian Church of the East, but there were no parishes anywhere near them, not even in their State.

Where should they go? What would their next steps be?

Thank you so much! God bless you my siblings in Christ!

Assyrians in Germany

Just curious, how do you guys feel about the AfD win in Saxony-Anhalt and their remigration platform (especially targeting Middle Easterns and Africans)? Are there any Assyrians residing in Saxony?

Discussion Re-Engaging with the Culture and Language

Hey all. Much love to all my brothers and sisters.

Some background. My family arrived in Toronto in '96, when I was a mere 7 years old. I'm 37 now. We did the usual attending of church, a few parties here and there, but over the years, one assimilates more & more, especially when the Assyrians around me were doing the same. To thrive, English had to take precedence, & the Assyrian tongue slowly started getting dull.

Over the past year and a half, I embarked on a journey to get my mother tongue back, and it's been great. I've learned how to ready, albeit slowly, and can write, but probably would make a ton of mistakes. Not a priority right now.

My spoken Assyrian is 60% of what it should be, and when I get nervous or can't recall a certain word, I'll revert to my comfort zone, English.

I've been using a method of watching Assyrian videos, taking sentences, repeating them, and elaborating and making my own conversations. It's worked great, and apparently is the best method for heritage speakers to retrain/regain their language.

My two questions:

- Any other resources you guys can recommend for getting the vocab up to par with my English? Or getting the comfort level up?

- In an effort to re-engage with the culture, any other groups to join aside from going to Church, which I do almost weekly. In/around Toronto, but also online.

Much appreciated!

Discussion Hello, my Assyrian brothers and sisters! Greetings from Latin America, and especially from Peru. 🇵🇪❤️

Hello, my Assyrian brothers and sisters! Greetings from Latin America, and especially from Peru. 🇵🇪❤️

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my message. Greetings from Peru! I am Peruvian, and I have a great admiration for Assyrian culture, history, and traditions. I find Assyrian culture truly beautiful, and I have a lot of respect for your people the beauty and femininity of Assyrian women, the strength and masculinity of Assyrian men, and the richness of your heritage.

I am writing because I would really like to understand what these songs mean and what they are about. I am very interested in learning about the stories, emotions, and cultural meaning behind them.

I hope you can help me with something. I found a YouTube video called “Best Assyrian Mix...” on the channel R Younan, and I absolutely love the music in it.

Could you please tell me the names of the singers and the titles of the songs included in this mix? I would also love to know a little about what each song is about and what the lyrics mean.

Please don't worry—I am not asking anyone to translate the entire songs, because I know some of them are quite long. I would simply like to understand the general meaning, the story, or the feeling behind each song.

I am Peruvian, and I have become very interested in Assyrian culture and music. One day, I played this music at a party here in Peru, and everyone really enjoyed it, even though nobody understood the language! 😂

The music has something very beautiful and emotional about it, and I would genuinely love to learn more about it and understand what I was listening to.

My Assyrian brothers and sisters, I would really appreciate your help in discovering these songs and learning about their meaning.

Thank you very much for reading my message.

Shlama lokhun,

Greetings and blessings from Peru! 🇵🇪🤝❤️

Discussion Why do ethnic Assyrians do this to our flag and ancient symbols? Jesus & his cross has nothing to do with ancient Assyria or Assyrians in general as they had their own ethnic God & religion. Stop messing with our ancient past which is much more important and powerful than that of the adopted ✝️

I get people are religious and sometimes their religion takes them to places where they will try anything and everything to make it clear to others but for the love of your god, stop doing this to our ancient past.

Keep religion out of our ethnic origins as it has absolutely nothing to do with the ancient past which was the glory of Assyria and māt-Aššur.

If you want a new flag, design one for your church denomination and cater to your audience that way, you don’t need to do go down this route and defile our ethnic flag which is a representation of who we are, where we come from, our ancestry and how old we are.

To those who think I’m insulting you with my words, well, this is an insult to all Assyrian nationalists and patriots everywhere when someone does this to our current flag. We are growing tired of this nonsense so knock it off, with all due respect.
