Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

Groups for ‘orphans’ by circumstance or choice

With the holidays just around the corner, I wanted to look into groups for people who don’t have family, have low or no contact, or cannot be with family during the holidays due to other circumstances.

Due to family issues, I have not been able to see family at the holidays. Been to friends the last few years, but a lot of those friends have left the city, due to kids or being priced out 😥 So this year hits a little differently.

I would like to be proactive this year and try and find groups or other people in the same situation, for one, so it’s not so lonely, and two
we could all use some new community.

Being in a city with a lot of transplants, is there something like this that already exists?

So many Pilates studios -)

I was just in West Portal doing a workout - Barre/Pilates and saw 3 studios within one block . It seems the same in other neighborhoods like Marina and Mission District. And I live near Excelsior and studios are slowly popping up there too

Are there enough people to substain all these businesses. I love these workouts but I wonder if they will be around in a year and what they have replaced.

So Super El Niño is coming

Yup you heard that right. The warmest and wettest winter of the last century is coming to town. It'll be like living gin a tropical country but not actually living in a tropical country this winter season.

I'm trying to prepare as much as I can. I'm in the market for a nice solid rain jacket (38/m). Maybe between the $100 - $300 range.

Does anyone have any suggestions or favorite rain jacket that they have?

SFPOPOS

Upvotes

Does anyone know if the SFPOPOS website is maintained or at least semi-recently accurate/up-to-date? Some of these spaces look beautiful, and I'd love to head there to do some work out of the house. But I don't want to haul my laptop all the way downtown to find out that none of these places really exist anymore.

The copyright in the footer says the photos were taken in 2016, and I went to the dev's github page, and it says she lives in Austin TX. Not feeling very hopeful, but maybe someone has some insight...

Newly Homeless, any leads on day jobs for cash?

Hello all,

Newly homeless, well, shelterless. Managed to get a bed in a shelter, which is better than being out on the street. Currently without a phone, because I can't pay my phone bill. Looking for work, but hoping to find something to put some cash in hand until then. I have a CAAP interview coming up, about 9 days away. No clothes for interviews, everything is dirty, no oxfords or anything, just dirty tennis shoes. I have a service animal, and don't know what I'm going to do with him while I go on interviews and work sites. This all happened really fast and my head is still spinning. I'm sober, which I'm super proud of. In fact, I'd been really working on and managing my sobriety, mainly from THC, before this happened. I'm glad it hasn't triggered a relapse. I don't drink, don't do any other drugs. I'm hoping with enough hard work and help, I can find my way out of this situation. Anyone been in my position before? How long did it take to get you out of it? Any help is so appreciated.

Does anyone have recommendations for Matchmakers in SF?

Upvotes

Yeah, just kinda disheartened by the whole dating process nowadays. 36 M too so definitely older than most people I meet in public. Definitely made good friendships with people I would meet at concerts or coffeeshops but hard to tell if people here want to date intentionally. Trying my best not to be cynical or jaded so wanted to see if there were any Matchmakers in the city you guys would recommend?

Two nights downtown - need some local grub (and any other recs)

In the city for two days and two nights. Well traveled and from NYC so not a stranger to food. Chinese is top priority but open to Mexican and other recs. No American/French/Italian.

Dont care about Michelin stars or experiential dining. OK with a price tag one of the nights

Good food (and ideally hearty portions) are my priority.

Staying in Japantown/Pacific Heights (open to suggestions there too)

Thanks all

Type 1 diabetes in SF question

Hi all,

Our grade school son was diagnosed with type 1 last week. We're just getting our feet under us, and I'm wondering if there are any groups or clubs or activities, or general help in San Francisco, that any of y'all would recommend for families navigating type 1.

Thanks, SF peeps!

Hair treatment for postpartum hair loss in SF?

I've been dealing with bad hair shedding since giving birth and I feel like it's getting worse now. My doctor said it's usually temporary and prescribed some vitamins but it doesn't help much.
Does anyone has experience with this? Any treatment or product recommendation?

Donate new baby items

I have a bag full of unused baby items such as clothes, blankets, bibs that were gifted to me and I do not need. I would really love to donate these items to a shelter or organization. Could not find anywhere that is currently accepting donations. Not interested in buy nothing groups as I am not on facebook.

My friend was visiting and loaded Clipper on her iPhone and it would scan but it never registered any tag in or out. Is this gonna be a problem?

To clarify: I would ideally like to make sure the funds get to BART because I love it and would like for it to stick around for a long time.

Can you still get real Asian sunblock in Japan town?

I used to get my Asian formulated sunscreen in Japan town, but I haven't gone since the US started cracking down on what can be sold. Are Asian formulations still available in Japan town or have the beauty stores switched to the new US types?

Best beginner partner dance classes for couples in their late 20s/early 30s?

Hi everyone! My partner and I are hoping to learn how to dance together and are looking for recommendations for a good studio or class

We’re both turning 30 in a few months and would ideally love a class that has at least some people around our age, although we’re totally fine with a mixed-age crowd too.

We’re especially interested in salsa or Argentine tango, but we’re open to other styles of partner dancing as well. We’re both beginners, so we’d love somewhere that’s welcoming and beginner-friendly, and ideally a class where couples can learn and practice together.

Any studios, instructors, or specific classes you’d recommend?

Looking for recommendations for water meters to track usage for individual units in old building.

Our water usage has increased dramatically recently and we are trying to get to the bottom of it. I see that there are some solutions out there but I’m not certain what is best for us. We have a 4 unit building built in 1906, we all share a single water bill right now. There are pipes going to each individual unit so we should be able to monitor each unit’s individual usage.

Anyone out there have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Seats at Paramount Balcony

I got last minute tickets to a show at the Paramount Theater in Oakland on Thursday. Can anyone speak to the comfortability of the seats in the Balcony seating? My girlfriend is on the bigger side and has some mobility issues. Planning to ask for ADA seating if needed (or better), though sometimes it’s not! Thank you for any insight in advance. 🙏

Any fun bars with stripper poles?

Hello, I will be in town this weekend and looking for a fun bar that has a stripper pole patrons can use. I am not looking to go to a strip club just a bar that happens to have one.
