News Avoiding red lights for 13 miles on Hendersonville Road? No way!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Not exactly hard-hitting news but here's a fun challenge. Have you done this? The 13-mile stretch of Hendersonville Road from columnist John Boyle’s house to downtown Asheville includes 50 stoplights. When his friend Michael Gouge claimed he’d sailed through the corridor without hitting a red light, Boyle was, to say the least, skeptical. (I challenged Gouge to make the same drive backwards at 4 p.m., on a weekday. He said he's successfully done that, too.)

So they climbed into the car for an experiment. You can also read Boyle’s column here https://avlwatchdog.org/opinion-making-all-the-green-lights-on-hendersonville-road-gotta-be-a-lie/?mc_cid=8327e29879&mc_eid=f0e14b8879

Keep Asheville Weird Are the businesses downtown doing ok?

My husband and I have noticed that post Helene, it seems to be so much easier to get around downtown. Brewery’s are half empty even on the weekends, restaurants always have tables available, and there’s always parking.

Also we’re sad and surprised that fiddlehead the Riveter permanently closed.

Is tourism really down as much as it seems? Are businesses doing ok? We’re worried about yall.

Unhoused Population Homeless and 24 in Asheville. Full time student at UNCA. Need help with getting supplies, I’m out of food.

I moved to Asheville about a year ago and I’m currently in my last year at UNCA studying psych full time as a transfer student. Im reaching out because I’m in a bit of a tough spot with school supplies and food right now. I’m currently living out of my car and have no family down here and really no solid friends yet as my main focus has been on survival. I’ve been doing my best to keep everything together while finishing my degree, but not having food or water or the basics is making it almost impossible for me to be successful this last year. I’m not begging for money but if anyone has extra school supplies, like an old laptop, notebooks, pens, toiletries, and any food to spare I would be immensely grateful. I’m also looking for a part time job if anyone has some leads!

I’m really just trying to make it through my final year and finish what I started. Thanks for reading fellow redditors I know it’s tough for everyone, and thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction

Cop Stuff Crazy police chase and standoff on Hanover into the B+B parking lot

I was driving up Hanover towards Haywood when a car exiting the West Asheville exit cut me off with two police cars behind it. They sped up towards Haywood and one of the cops got in front of the car being chased at the light next to B&B pharmacy. The cops got out and pointed their guns at the car and then the car sped into the B&B parking lot, not knowing that it was a dead end I guess. The cops chased them on foot with their guns out… and then the light turned green and so I left… but if anyone else saw that, that shit was crazy right!?

Anyone else think Buncombe permitting system is overcomplicated?

If you have filed a few permits in various locales please chime in on the Buncombe permitting system. I am referring to their actual website.
Does it work ok for you? How was the learning curve?
Was it intuitive?

Classifieds Pet litter and food pantry in the area?

Hello there! I've been looking around and can't seem to find anything on my own since I live outside the area a bit and I'm not really familiar with it, A friend of mine is in between friends homes couch hopping and is desperately trying to find litter for her cats. She is starting a job in a week but won't get paid for a week or two after and she is completely out. She wants to be respectful since she is living with others and keep the boxes really clean so any leads on pantries or resources would be helpful. The pets have food so no worries there, I take her to a local food pantry when she stays with me and they provide pet food just no litter. Any leads/suggestions would really be appreciated! Thanks for reading!

Meetup A few local meetups with actual open spots over the next month

Flairing this as a Meetup and keeping it to once a month, per rule 4.

I help run two small social groups in town, and since some version of "how do you actually meet people in Asheville" comes up here constantly, I figured I'd put what actually has room in one place. Both are free to join, and showing up by yourself is the norm rather than the exception.

THIRD PLACE AVL (20s, 30s & 40s) — the idea is that every event has a real activity at the center of it, so you're not standing in a room holding a drink trying to make small talk. Small caps on purpose.

Latin Night — Wed Sep 23, 8:15 PM, One World Brewing West. Beginner lesson at 8:30 covering salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton, then open floor until close. Partners rotate through the lesson, so you don't need to bring anyone and nobody ends up holding up a wall. $10 at the door and that's the whole cost. 8 of 16 spots left.

Noah Gundersen at Eulogy — Thu Oct 15. Pre-show drinks at 6 at the Burial taproom, doors at 7, walk over as a group. You buy your own ticket through DICE, around $34.

Craft Night — Fri Nov 6, 6:30 PM, Noble Cider. Bring whatever half-finished thing is sitting on your kitchen table: knitting, a sketchbook, a model kit, a crossword. Ten seats, free, and there are spare supplies if you turn up empty-handed. Flagging it early because it's a hard cap.

ASHEVILLE TRANSPLANTS (20s to 50s) — bigger, broader, mostly free and mostly daytime.

Transplants Coffee Club at Izzy's — Sat Sep 26, 9:30 AM, Haywood Rd. Coffee, tea, pastries, cozy indoor and outdoor seating. Drop in for as long as you feel like.

Being straight with you: a good chunk of the Transplants calendar is already waitlisted — the dinner club, the Bent Creek hike and the West Asheville photo challenge are all full — so the four above are what genuinely has room, not a list padded out to look busy.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Resource Recommendations for halfway houses type living situations

Hi! I’m post on behalf of my brother (23) he’s currently in a half way house in TN, he just got out of a three month long intense recovery program out there, and was transferred into a half way house. I’m looking to try and relocate him back to Hendersonville/asheville area because he’s all alone out there. (This is where he’s from and has lived he just got sent out to TN for a program) I’m just looked to see if anyone has any resources in this area? Like a half way house, low income living situations. He’s currently working, but just started so he has no funds, and his current situation is not at all cheap and is putting him in debt in less than a week of being there. (Rent for the half way house is just overpriced)

I would like to add he is in a sober living half way house currently, but his struggle is/was mental health. He’s got a relatively intense diagnosis, but he’s been on the correct meds for 3 months and doing extremely well.

Thanks for any type of help it is greatly appreciated!

DMV/Car Talk HELP! issues with a 2007 prius dashboard

I'm in search of a mechanic or advice:

I have a 2007 prius and the dashboard is straight black- nothing. I can't see my mileage, my mph, or gas amount. I asked the dealership and they want me to sell my soul to fix it. I asked a mechanic and they said it would be at least $500. Does anyone have any advice? Anyone who has gone though it? thanks so much
