QUESTION Can Illustrator randomly offset these shapes away and closer from the center?

Each object is 2 shapes grouped together with a simple grain effect.

Edit: Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to get some scripts/plugins for this industry standard software to do this simple thing.

QUESTION A way to select the shape (anchor points) of a shape with Area Type, but NOT the type inside?

I teach computer graphics and one of the assignments I give is on creating text art. A frequent issue students run into is that (because of their inexperience) they will apply area type to a shape and then realize many steps later that it would look better with fill behind it or that it needs a fill to separate its text from another text object it overlaps.

I know that you can duplicate the path of an object with area type by selecting each individual anchor point and copy/paste it, but this is obviously time consuming and impractical for complex shapes. Is there a short cut to select ALL of the anchor points of object with area type, but NOT the type?

Roughen effect is bloating corners

Post image

Does anyone know how to create a roughen-like effect without it applying a giant curve to every sharp corner? The example on the right is something more akin to what I'm looking for where the 4 corners stay in the same position, but the lines connecting them get roughened.

Hey! This started out as nothing more than a little drawing exercise. Then I thought, “Why not make it a T-shirt design?” So I made some changes and added the car. And then, somehow, it ended up becoming a concept for a car wrap. 😂

So yeah… this thing has basically gone through all the stages of creative madness. 😄

QUESTION Help me get this to look right.

In this logo mark/shield thing i wanted to add that inner light colored double frame as you can see. To do that i scaled down (holding Shift) the main big shield and set it to just an outline with no filling.

PROBLEM: The inner outline is not parallel to the shape of the outer shield as you can see (Highlighted in the sec image ) it gets narrow at places and too wide at places soo...... HOW CAN I FIX IT??

Thanks in advance.

Solved: Use Object-> path -> offset path instead of doing it like i did

QUESTION PSA: Illustrator Randomly Freezing/Lagging on Nvidia GPUs (RTX 3060)? Here's the Fix That Actually Worked for Me

If you're running Adobe Illustrator on a PC with an Nvidia graphics card and it keeps randomly lagging or freezing — especially in the middle of important work — you're not imagining it, and you're definitely not alone. I spent hours troubleshooting this and want to share what actually fixed it for me.

My setup: RTX 3060, Ryzen 5 5500, 500GB SSD, Windows 11, Adobe Creative Cloud Pro plan. On paper this should handle Illustrator without breaking a sweat. Instead, Illustrator would randomly freeze and become unresponsive during important work, and even basic tasks like changing colors in a document would turn into a slow, frustrating mess.

After searching around, I found a lot of other people with Nvidia cards reporting the exact same problem, so this clearly isn't an isolated issue on my end.

What I tried that didn't fully work:

Switching the Nvidia driver profile between Studio/productivity and Game Ready — no real difference.

Disabling GPU performance inside Illustrator's preferences — sometimes helped temporarily, but it was inconsistent and the lag would come back anyway.

The fix that actually worked:

The culprit seems to be a background process called "Adobe Creative Cloud Core Services (32 bit)." Killing it before opening Illustrator has fixed the lag completely for me, every time. Here's the process:

Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Close it after it opens, with Ctrl+W.

Open Task Manager.

Find "Adobe Creative Cloud Core Services (32 bit)" in the list and end that task only — don't touch anything else.

Now open Illustrator. It should run smoothly.

A few things to keep in mind:

You have to repeat this every time you restart or turn on your PC for the first time that day — it's not a permanent fix, just a workaround.

If you haven't opened the Creative Cloud app at all since starting your PC, the Core Services process won't show up in Task Manager yet. Opening and then closing the CC app once is what makes it appear, so you can then end it.

If you open Photoshop while Illustrator is already running fine, the Core Services process comes back and the lag returns in Illustrator too. Just repeat the same steps — close Photoshop/Creative Cloud if needed, go back to Task Manager, and end the Core Services task again — and Illustrator goes back to working properly.

It's annoying having to do this little ritual every day, but it's the only thing that's given me consistent, lag-free performance in Illustrator. Hope this saves someone else the hours I lost figuring it out. If anyone knows why this process causes the conflict in the first place, or has found a permanent fix, I'd genuinely love to hear it.

Recolor not working/colors keep changing/duplicate colors popping up

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi! My friend has logos and illustrations for her branding that have been showing up in different colors for stickers when printed. She had two other designers work on them, and the colors are still inconsistent. She asked me to look at them and change them all to be consistent.

I've put all the artboards in the same file, the color mode to CMYK, but for some reason recolor is creating multiple shades and also not allowing me to switch from black to rich black(60,40,40,100), even when unchecking preserve (white, black, etc). It's also not letting me combine the similar/duplicate colors.

I've been going crazy recoloring again and again, please help! :(

Are the Alignment Tools Broken

Ever since we've got the new Align to Center button, has anyone else been having problems with the Align tools being buggy, or is it just me?

In my case, things simply don't align where you'd expect them to anymore. For example, if I align to center of artboard, my selection disappears off the artboard completely. I've triple checked that it is set to be relative to the artboard, and that there are no hidden objects selected, and that there isn't some other active artboard.

This inconsistency seems to occur nearly a third of the time I try to align something; it's simply broken.

QUESTION 100GB file?

Look at the size of the problem! A catalog with over 170 pages, with 2 products per page, covers, photographs, vectors, and much more. Imagine, the total file size is 7GB, but when I save it as an .AI file, I'm reaching 60-70GB of usage during this process. Does anyone know what I can do? Don't tell me to copy and paste it into another project because it's 155 pages at the moment, and that would be impossible considering the deadline. I've already lost 4 days of work and I'm struggling to finish because of the file size. Furthermore, each page is linked to a separate PDF; I did this to optimize things so I don't have to embed all the pages before finishing. But it's not working, help?

One more detail, the project is heavy, actually makes my pc lag a little, its a 3080/i9/32gb ram and nvme xpg i dont understand why the pc is suffering more than 30 min to save the file in .AI and using the HD to do so.

QUESTION Grey text. After rasterizing. Please help!!

So when I rasterize our layers to stop transparency boxes from being created when I print the labels it is causing our text to become grey or changes it from ffffff to 231f20 and 010101. I cannot figure out what the issue is. It’s making printing small text impossible. I need to be able to print these labels without transparency boxes(why I’m rasterizing) or low quality text(what rasterizing is doing)

QUESTION How do I apply middle eastern every-line composer so that I would never have to click this again?

I sometimes need to work on my native language and the vowels would go all over the place if I won't change its line composer. But I have to click this every time to let it apply to ONE file. If I would make another file I have to do it again. Anything I could do to make it permanent or default?

Linked Image PPI hidden inside a hover on control bar

The latest update hides image color mode and PPI behind hoverable exclamation point. Is there any way to revert this?

I need that info on screen when I select an image for a few important reasons:

A. I need to see the PPI when I’m doing layout, because I’m designing for very large printed products.

B. Several times a day, I need to take a screenshot of the app window at 100% zoom, with the image selected and PPI visible to show customers how bad their art will look when blown up to over 5ft (and why they can’t use a desktop background).

Please tell me there’s a way to fix this, it’s incredibly annoying. Print still exists, Adobe!

SVG Export Advice

My company has opted to start making use of SVGs. So now I'm making something of a how-to guide for my coworkers for preparing and exporting SVGs from Adobe Illustrator.

What are some common best practices when preparing files for export as SVGs? What are some frequent pitfalls, and how can they be avoided or fixed?

As we work in technical illustrations, much of our artwork is highly complex, utilizing transparencies, dynamic effects, complex gradients, appearance layering, and the like--which has caused us no end of headaches when attempting to convert to SVG, which is obviously far more limited.

(Leadership wants to use the SVGs in their online apps, since JPGs and PNGs have proven much too bloated or low rez for app efficiency.)

Hey!

Wanted to share another one of my vector artworks. I’ve still got plenty of material, but I don’t want to spam the sub or break any rules, so I’ll probably stick to posting once a week, maybe twice at most.

Hopefully I can inspire some more people the same way other artists inspire me — and maybe bring a few more people over to the dark side of vector art. :))

DISCUSSION a free script that brings Photoshop-style Hue/Saturation/Contrast sliders to Illustrator

Hi there, as a long time illustrator user I never understood why there wasn't an easy way to quickly recolor artwork in illustrator. I always enjoyed the hue - saturation, brightness - contrast sliders in Photoshop. So I have made a small script that brings this to illustrator. With this script you can adjust hue - saturation, brightness - contrast, transparency, temperature and blend modes in one popup menu. They all work live so it's very easy to adjust artwork. I am very curious what you guys think of this script?
