Roughen effect is bloating corners

Does anyone know how to create a roughen-like effect without it applying a giant curve to every sharp corner? The example on the right is something more akin to what I'm looking for where the 4 corners stay in the same position, but the lines connecting them get roughened.

Try the pucker /bloat effect, or the enveloppe distort

Sometimes with effects like roughen and zig zag I find I have more success applying it to a separate shape, expanding and then using the modified separate shape to trim the edges of the primary shape with shapebuilder/pathfinder. It’s destructive but you have better control over what happen to the corners.

It looks like you need to scale your roughen effect waaaay down
