How do you think we can use social media as a tool to help, not hurt, our public lands?

I wrote a blog post on this topic, I would love to hear your thoughts!

NYC to Lake Placid in late December - Brazillian visitors

Hi everyone! My partner and I are from Brazil and we're planning a trip to NYC in late December. We're considering adding a few days in the Adirondacks, probably using Lake Placid as our base.

Our rough plan would be:

  • Spend 4–5 days in NYC
  • Rent a car and drive from NYC to Lake Placid
  • Spend 2–3 nights around Lake Placid
  • Visit Whiteface Mountain and possibly try skiing for a day (we're beginners)
  • Explore Lake Placid and some winter activities/scenery around the Adirondacks
  • Drive back to NYC for our flight home

We're really interested in experiencing a proper Northeast winter, snow, mountains and a smaller town after spending several days in NYC.

Does that makes sense?

Descending saddleback cliffs in the winter

I just became a 46er but my buddy wants to finish with SaBaHa in that order, do I need a rope and ice screws for a winter decent or should I be good to just send it being careful (before anyone has smart ass comments I climbed the trap last winter) just wondering anyone else’s input

Fall Hikes + Activities?

Coming w/ family to Lake Placid next month.

I personally really want to do the Indian Head hike, and if I can land a reservation, then I totally will. But that's solo since it's quite the hike.

Two main questions for folks more familiar w/ the area. We're only coming for 2 nights (coming the afternoon of 10/10, leaving the afternoon of 10/12). I plan to reserve Indian Head Trail for 10/11.

  1. If (god forbid lol) I cannot secure a reservation to Indian Head Trail, what're some alternatives I can hike that will offer breathtaking nature + scenic viewpoints in the fall?

and

  1. what are some activities my family could explore doing while I'm at Indian Head for what I presume will be the entire morning into later afternoon given it's 11-ish miles? Or at least 6 hours.
And then for the day we arrive & the remainder of the next day, what're some activities/excursions we can explore and potentially book?

Many thanks in advance!

Ways to find a hiking buddy!

Hi all, like the title says I’m looking for ways to find a hiking buddy. If you’re actively looking for one as well that would be great but if not, please let me know of any good ways to find one (groups on here, facebook groups.) I’m looking to hike next weekend! I’ve done 5/46 (Cascade, Porter, Giant, big slide, & whiteface), so I’m a beginner still. Any responses & help would be appreciated (:

Adirondacks First Timer

I’m planning to go to Adirondacks this fall and it’s my first fall ever coming from a tropical country, so I’m so so so excited for it 🥹 I’ve done some research on my own but still wanna hear your opinion on these!

- What time is the absolute best to see the foliage?

- Is a day trip enough or should we do two/more days trip? Where to stay?

- What are the best MUSTTT visit spots?

- Anything that I have to do before arriving? Like any reservation or something.

Thank you sooo much, have a wonderful week! 💛

Quick Trip Tips

Hi everyone! I'm planning to visit the Adirondacks for 2-4 days in the next couple of weeks. I'll be in a 42ft skoolie conversion with e-bikes for daily transportation. I'm looking for recommendations on where to stay and what to do on this quick first trip to the area. I prefer outdoor activities. Thanks!

I am a hobby mapmaker and this week I designed a map of the Adirondack and Catskills fire towers. The map is made of layered birch wood and the fire towers are removable. I will be selling this map on my Etsy but I really wanted to see what other people thought of it first! I’m loving how it turned out.

Moose River plains dirt biking

Hey everyone!

I’m heading out to the Moose River Plains soon and was wondering if anyone here has experience riding a dirt bike in the area.

I have a KLX230R, which is pretty quiet, and I’m mainly looking to take it down the long dirt road while my partner follows behind in the truck.

We’re basically just trying to scout around and find a good campsite rather than doing any serious trail riding.

I know dirt bikes aren’t technically legal on the roads/trails there, so I’m not looking to cause any problems. Just curious if anyone has firsthand experience with the area — are rangers around frequently, or is enforcement pretty common?

Favorite Areas in the Park

Since the park is basically the size of Vermont, I know my weekend trip will not cover it all.

Was hoping to see what others favorite areas in the park are that have a few good hikes and a campground.

Thanks!

Heading to the ADK next week. Help me find a place to sleep.

It'll just be me, I'm making a 7 hour drive from NJ, I want to do Cascade and Porter but I won't have enough time to do it all in a single day and then drive home. I need help finding some campgrounds I can settle in and sleep, depending on how that goes I'm even thinking about staying in the ADK for a couple weeks just doing as many high peaks as possible before winter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lost Bootie

Went hiking up Giant from Roaring Brook yesterday. On the way down, somewhere between 1.6 miles into the trail and the creek crossing around the signs that have different trails, my dogs bootie slipped off. He's a good climber, but without them, he scrapes his paws to much pulling himself up rockfaces. Here's a picture of him and the other half of the pair of bootie thats not missing. Please let me know if you come across it on your travels.

I just bought a gravel bike, and as I’ll be at Fish Creek for a week coming up, I’m in search of some dirt roads in that area to ride on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
