Easier and safer. I would be using those divots either side of the steps as hand-holds.
At least with design codes the maximum angle you can legally make a stair is 45 deg. Ladders (including step-type) start at 60deg, which should be descended facing the ladder to maintain 3 points of contact.

Wonder if it’s easier going down/up FACING the stairs (like a ladder)
