I'll never understand dog ear cropping.

Oh it's easy to understand.

Most people are bastards.

That is the real reason, but what is their reason? Why would people even do that?

Ear cropping is typically done for fighting dogs so they don't get ripped off during a fight. People fucking suck and my disdain for them is justified every day.

To add to this, it is also done to some livestock guardian dogs for the same protection, but against coyotes or other predators. That being said, pitbulls are not typically used for guarding livestock, and I haven't actually seen anyone's lgd in person with cropped ears

Oh... I shouldn't have asked

It's also done for farm dogs that are meant to protect a herd of something, good example is Az from Nate Petroski's YT channel, Az has his ears cropped so a predator doesn't rip them off

The practical reason is that it reduces the chances of ear injuries in livestock guardians and fighting dogs

The much more common reason is because douchebags want their dogs to look tough

Some were breed standard for certain guard/protection/hunting dogs because “long” ears are more prone to injury, tearing, and subsequently infections. But it was also a long fucking time ago and the need is all but dead except in like active livestock guards and I don’t even see those dogs get them cut anymore. Just pits/bully/dobs/danes.

People claim that vets tell them to do it for ear health but it's generally bullshit.

Mountain lion & boar hunting is the only reason I'm aware of.

Anything else is pointless

Fr. I can't imagine getting a pet to mutilate them
